305 BROOKHAVEN APT 5

In the hallway of legends and ghosts
I wander aimlessly in dream
Talking with the dead of Brookhaven
The rope burns are still fresh on Helen's neck
A sickly scarlet mark upon her throat
In this corridor, I pace, a key in hand; lost
Forever the sojourn of quietus in keeping
Before a door numbered two, I stand
Silence a silver web with the muted sobs of angels
It is not a key I hold when she at last comes upon me
It is only the dark tangent of lost souls and vipers
And a blind man staggering upon a battlefield as
Cannons roar and the blue turban leers
The rains come like Jacob Marley's ghost
Riding the coach forever

Pity More Apt

I’m tired of people 
slinging hash
and calling it Haute Cuisine

The Emperor naked
behind the mirror
where truth still reigns supreme

Waiting for accolades
pity more apt
so they again can void

Leaving their excrement
out on display
— only the rats to enjoy

How do you know what you know
It fell from the skies into my eyes
That were ready and willing to see

Apt Apology

“I couldn’t care less” is easy to say
When brushing off a critical slur
Or covering up something unkind
Said to excuse a thoughtless deed
If sincere regret is what’s in mind
Perhaps you should say, “Grrrrrrrr,
I could care less,” and slink away!

Apt Words

True beauty is all around
lovely things that make no sound
pretty sights which can be found
on this earth to which we’re bound.

True there are things which are sweet
when he and she distant meet
to scorch dread time burns the heart
never neither longs to part.

True, awe comes from many things
an elephant with golden wings
a snow-strewn path newly made
rows of pines in a winter glade.

But, of these things I write and speak
long I yearn and long do seek
about you divine most of all
you are Winter Spring Summer Fall.

Prerogatives

Diverse ideas vie for fecund place 
In my mind and heart these days, 
Every new thought sees the next
As an invasive unwelcome guest. 

And being a democratic fella at heart, 
I just wouldn't wish to play major part
As judge if privilege and freedoms be
Basis why litigious kinsmen disagree.

To every thought there's natural right
Enshrined in legal folios beyond fight: 
Any idea may claim an acre of mind, 
In any random astute brain they find. 

And so I a respecter of sacred things
Such as fragile rights of mute beings, 
Must let every instreaming opinion in; 
And call null their war and brutish din. 

For, has not every sovereign thinker, 
Rights of their own to soundly tinker,
And censor apt and odd notion alike, 
That within their wild cranium spike?

Tis Apt, Fit For Purpose

Cap fits the purpose
Attired neat to tread
Smart as a new pin
A snug bug in new rug
Swell-heeled, clad
A shoo-in for sure

Apt Applause

Not much to say
As silence plays


Let stillness show
A wordless know


Poise without voice
Comes from due choice


Watch silence speak
A pleasant peak


Be willing here
To embrace cheer


Go beyond words
With message heard


Feel by the way
Transcends mere say


Know in your soul
A precious whole


You know the way
Feel mellows stay


Apt applause thrills
A hollow feel

Flog Is An Apt Anagram of Golf

I’d watched the ‘Open’ and the 'Masters'
And thought that l’d give golf a try
I hired some clubs and little white balls
From the tee I hoped my ball would sail high

I lined up perfectly and took a swing
But the ball stayed on that little blue tee
I tried again and missed it once more
I was a laughing stock for all to see!

If questioned about my handicap
I’d smile and say I don’t have one at all
The only real problem that I have is
I can’t hit the ruddy golf ball!
