To Karin: Brandenburg Gate

Like some dark frail bird
she quivered and fluttered
there at my door
one dark cold Advent night,
swearing to return
come the new year
with a photo of Brandenburg Gate.

Arms, hands, fingertips, eyes,
then nothing between us
but electrified space –
her light tread descending the steps –
my heart drawn downward
by the diminishing sound.

Sometimes still my heart is snared
between winter
a swirling hem
and Brandenburg

Grace

A cold, snowy night in Advent.
I kneel at the altar, alone 
in the church warm with the breath
of old wood and worn prayers.
The pages of the book
soften under my fingers.

Behind me, the silent nave.
Still, I speak the words aloud,
as though the empty pews listen,
as though grace leans in,
hungry for a voice.

A joyous tiding on this hallowed night:
That for our sake, a virgin would conceive.
The Child would promise everlasting light
To all who in His saving love believe,
And for our sin we may no longer grieve.
Among the beasts was born this infant King
As choirs of angels came to dance and sing.

Green moon in a dirty sky,
snow drifting in,
a subliminal huff-huff,
of polar bears stalking.

Ice crackles, bewitched
caw-clawing crows
gather to sleep
amid bad dreams.

If we gaze too long,
a green sheen
smears stinging cheeks.

When making love
to the pillowing dark,
snarling monkey's chase
naked angels
across a gloaming night.

In red and white stripped socks
toes curl.
Phantasmagoric broomsticks
swish tinsel
from bleary eyes.

Later than predicted,
a deeper snow arrives.

Waiting for Waiting’s End

The chancy countdown clock of my mortality
is ticking toward some unknown preset alarm.
I’m aware of every taciturn tick tock
in unrecoverable moments spent waiting
for something to happen…
and I do not wait well.

I wait for stiff slices of tanned toast to pop up.
I wait for the microwave’s proclamatory ping.
I wait for endless dreary drizzle to stop.

Refreshing

Sometimes the dry desert wind
Strips slowly the sandless skin
Of the soul 

Gentle balm of the wide Spirit
Settling upon the surface 
Singing a song of suppleness 

Message of the mindful reflection 
From the internal mirror 
Of the heart

Home to the fruitful Spirit
Residence of the restoring, loving kindness
Of the refreshing riverside

Where solace comes, pacifying
With the sounds trickling

Soon a time to repent will come
When winter captures the west,
East will summer then enjoy

Supine haze swiped tall grass wooing shadows,
as chimes of wren's feathers a float parade,
begs a trace with leaves sought resting barrows, 
the fondness parting loft and low portrayed.

Nourishing willows stranding morning dews,
while lengthy lappings the murmured streaming, 
courses the sourcing promises pact sinews,
of turned new leaves and blazed hues trails dreaming.

Where darkness thrives and hope subsides,
There, among the shadows deep,
Dwarf, hopeful lights from the forest floor seep.

Amidst the trees that loom so tall and straight,
Split by such kindness, of light they partake,
And from nothing, one soul takes form.
