Silence

The silence has been audible I hear it all around. I truly haven’t known before That silence has a sound. We all sit without conversing. There's nothing left to say. If our loved one survives the night. He may not survive the day. We’ve unplugged all the noisy clocks That would disturb his rest. When everything is quieted, One hears the silence best. All of time has been suspended As has each throbbing word. A life of merit is ending And now the void is heard.

YES! Silence IS a sound. And in this case it is a sound that accompanies the angst of waiting for one to die. I heard this sound for days as my father lingered in a coma. It is the worst "sound" I ever heard. Brilliant poem, dear friend. Definitely a favorite for me. Forgive me for not reading more; I've got the flu and it's been keeping me in bed. Love, Carolyn
