Songs Are Poems Set To Music: Simon and Garfunkel

Blog Posted:3/8/2024 9:43:00 PM
If you grew up in the 1960s and 70s, like I did, you are familiar with the songs of Simon and Garfunkel.

Simon and Garfunkel were an American folk rock duo consisting of singer-songwriter Paul Simon and singer Art Garfunkel. They were one of the best-selling music acts of the 1960s, producing hits such as "Bridge Troubled Water," Scarborough Fair/Canticle," and "The Sound of Silence."

Paul Simon wrote "The Sound of Silence" in 1964. The meaning of the song remains unclear, but Simon, who at one time was a Literature major, has said “The song seems to me like something that came out of my literature classes. It feels like there’s Camus in there,” ...“I didn’t sit down to write about alienation in America. I’m not saying the song isn’t about that, but it wasn’t my intention, ..."
Simon & Garfunkel - Sound Of Silence live (1965)

THE SOUND OF SILENCE

Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
No one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools" said I, "You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence"

*****
Many artist have done covers of the song, but one of the most amazing covers of it was done in 2015 by the Metal band Disturbed whose lead singer, David Draiman, with his powerful voice emphasises the anger implied by the lyrics. My favorite version of the song is, of course, is by Simon and Garfunkel, but the version by Disturbed is a very close second.

Paul Simon is a tremendous writer. Are you familiar with The Dangling Conversation? John

He is. No. I don't think I've heard that one. I'll have to look it up.

I love them both separate and apart. Simon seemed to have the most success when they went solo. His music has more rock beat. Like me and Julio song. Art did a romantic tape I bought years ago.. I loved how he did I only Have Eyes for you. Sounds of Silence is all about society and isolation. I remember being in a class that analyzed it. It actually has deep meaning so maybe he did not intend that, but once his pen got started, it took him there. Isn't that how many of us write sometimes?

I think the words of Souund of Silence have meaning for past, current and future generations. Yes, sometimes the poems I write have a meaning for others that I was not aware of when I wrote the poem.

Saw them in the Gym (really) at the University of New Hampshire in 1968. There are relatively few lyric writers whose words transcend the melody, yet they were exceptional at both--even after many years the lyrics stay with me without even hearing the songs.

I remember well. The song always gave me chills. The Disturbed version to which you directed does the same. Wow. Thanks for this Chetta. :)

You are welcome. I'm happy you read the blog and commented on it.

It's funny bc so much of modern music in the last several decades is all about the beat and singability (is that a word lol?). Lyrics are often just thrown together and sometimes even nonsensical. Paul Simon was of a generation when words meant something. John Denver is another. Bob Dylan. Joni Mitchell. McCartney/Lennon to a lesser degree. Nice blog. I don't like Disturbed since they seem kind of evil but their rendition is particularly powerful

The only song by Distubed that I know us its Sound of Silence. Disturbed is a Metal band and I was never a fan of that type of music. Of course, the other singer/songwriters you mention are favorites, especially John Denver.

Ah i know this song, classic, one that so many enjoy. Although im not born in that era, it lives on. I love the fact that you mentioned disturbed, im a huge fan of disturbed, especially “ stupify” its so good. And i do believe lyrics writing is special, and a song always connects to me based on lyrics. There are some great lyricists that i admire too.

I am not familiar with other songs by Disturbed., but the group certainly did a powerful version of Sound of Silence.

Timeless classic. I often Google it when I feel its vision softly creeping. And yeah, Disturbed added a whole new contemporary vibe to it.

No, contrary to popular perception I do have a life. Not interested in playing in the Soup sandpit with all the other mean kids. I did post a little review of the SOTU just to get the juices flowing again.

It is certainly timeless. I was just now listening to it performed by Gregorian Masters of Chant.
