Rousing Rondine Update

Blog Posted by Jeff Kyser: 10/13/2022 7:37:00 AM

It looks like folks are off to a good start! I'm excited to see what y'all come up with, and know it will be great!

I did want to provide a restatement of the rhyme scheme. It DOES NOT impact on any poems submitted so far, but might be a clarification. The Rondine form states:

  • The refrain comes from the opening word or phrase of the poem
  • Rhyme pattern looks like this: abbaabR/abbaR

Perhaps it would have been better to list the rhyme pattern as:

        (Ra)bbaabR/abbaR

just to emphasize that the refrain comes from the first part of your first line. For example,

1: Do not refrain from this, my love

....

7:     do not refrain

...

12:    do not refrain

I read somewhere that the refrain should have 4 syllables, each line 8. Interesting form. I’ve penned a few already. Thanks for introducing this form Jeff, which strangely is not accepted by PS. Who then am I to complain about Quietus?

A lot of these forms have variations. I've seen shorter and longer refrains. I didn't make a specific requirement on refrain length for that reason, just kept it at making sure it is the first part of the first line.

You're welcome! See reply regarding refrain length (no requirement) to Unseeking Seeker above.

Thanks for the clarification, Jeff, because I wrote one yesterday using the last phrase of the first line. Now, I know that is wrong, and I won't subject you to it! Or, I may rewrite. Thanks.

There's a lot of flexibility in some of these forms - I've not seen a Rondine with the last part of the first line used, but I have seen Rondines with shorter or longer portions of the beginning of the first line, so I just left refrain length out of the "requirements". Glad folks are having a go at it!
