FFS…

Blog Posted by Terry Flood: 12/18/2024 5:28:00 PM

When one has spent what seems like a lifetime getting a 'gritty' poem right, and the 'soup that shall be obeyed' won't even allow the word 'bitch'... is it perhaps time to point a finger at Poetry Soup and laugh hysterically. FFS... Grow up Soup... this is English... it's a language... and most of it is not obscene nor offensive.

Reference my latest poem 'Laura Norder 2 - New Balls Please'... a gangster might well say 'bitch'... he probably won't say 'witch'.

So, thanks Poetry Soup for watering down my gangster. I wonder... do you do refunds... or is 'refund' a disallowed word?

Great intercourse, Terry. Obviously the system is automated to filter without contextual analysis. :0)

Terry, I was doing a nature poem once on birds and PS would not allow the name of a bird called Crested Tit, this is a whole species of birds with this common word in their name, that was so unreasonable, they should read the context of the word and poem before saying no to that word ~

We get a number of different Tit species in our garden, Constance. I’ve often wondered whether Soup would let them anywhere near these pages.

I feel your pain, the same thing happened on my poem The Sound of Thunder. I read your poem, nice graphics and plenty of grit. John

Well, I got that wrong. I deffo expected a write about ‘posterior wind’. What I got was a smashing write about something far deeper ;-)

Can’t claim any credit for the graphic, John. And I turned a blind eye to the notion of a Met cop in a U.S. uniform ;-) I must check your ‘Sound of Thunder’… I suspect I can guess at its subject matter.

Your blog sure made me smile Terry, I know the word 'ass' gets starred but it's in the bible - go figure and as for 'bitch surely consideration should be given to the context of the poem. Of course there are differences in the UK/US terminology of some words like 'fanny'. I've seen some truly pornographic poems get though the filter - and ive alerted soup admin! Hope you have a fab time over the festive period:-) hugs jan xx

I try real hard to spot any errors/typos before I post. Yet still I feel the need to immediately read what actually appears on these pages. Even so, somebody, somewhere read ‘Laura Norder 2’ before I could replace the stolen word. It’s not life threatening… but it is annoying. Have a great Christmas yourself too, Jan

Silent's recent contest-3 sides to every side would fit amply here (and ty Silent for your contest sponsorships). There's the admins, (some) writers and (some) readers point of view regarding this issue. Some care, some could care less and some care to draw the line in support to the foundation to their house. We the writers can yell and scream but for what? We can also vent, which is a no no per blogging rules ... (oh, oh I forgot... hehe ... I can get banned for such? My statement: Ty and BTW I had a nice time here for supporting the left wing ...). But the only hope is that the admin can make some compromises, which I truly doubt.

I would still be irked by everyday ‘mild’ words being blocked. But if soup is going to block words important to the very flow and context of a poem, then it should highlight the issue rather than posting it and making the author look incompetent. I suggested elsewhere the facility to post in draft format… not ideal, but better.

I suspect that some ‘off the shelf’ app is to blame…. But surely such apps have provision for customisation.

is it an artistic platform or a kindergarten on here? they are a bit over zealous with the censorship, i mean, these sort of words are acceptable now in contemporary poetry, and one of the winners in the poetry society's annual comp was titled 'f*****g in cornwall'..my everyday language is pretty bad, but then i'm often stressed and frustrated lol

I have to say, Charlotte, that that winning title gave me a chuckle, and I’d never dream of using that word here. But the limitations of our use of language are getting silly now. I once wrote a poem where I referred to humans using their species name… Soup wasn’t having that… I had to put H0m0 or something similar. Bonkers!

I'm glad there's at least some effort at censorship for this "allegedly" family friendly site. Content seems to be another matter, perhaps more subjective and harder to regulate

Hi Terry. Crazy isn’t it? Scratch Arse Ware was banned from a poem of mine about strange UK place names. I had to use an asterisk for one of the letters instead. (Scratch Arse Ware is an area of sloping limestone hills in Purbeck, Dorset, that's very popular with walkers and hikers for its phenomenal sea views leading down to Dancing Ledge)..don’t get me started on Shitterton in Dorset, UK where my aunt lives..I find it strange that words you can’t use in full in the poem section can be discussed at will in the comments section without a problem. :) Cheers - Gary

I’ve long since thought we should be able to post in draft format so we can check for these vile obscenities before posting to the pages. In this instance the word wasn’t even asterisked out… simply removed. As someone who works real hard on getting the rhymes perfect this was infuriating. Thanks, Gary.

Try replacing it, Terry. Refunds? HA! and as if!!
