An Angel Wearing a Red Coat

Blog Posted:2/27/2008 3:25:00 AM
He inertly sat on his favorite chair in the café where he always had his morning breakfast in. Amid the noise, the giggles, the sound of fresh juice being poured into glasses, and the turning of newspaper pages, a large scream of silence, guilt, and bewilderment took place within him. He stared at his wife as she entered the café, wearing that red coat he asked her to throw out ages ago. He knew that his love for her was gone. It was her stubbornness that pushed him away; he no longer missed her when she was gone. All the unused lipsticks, the dresses she never wore flooding the closet, her awful singing, and the mess at home made him hate every second he spent there with her. What a choice he had made! He chose to leave her at the café, which was the same place he first realized that he no longer loved her. She walked in the café with an innocent smile on her face, and he tried his best not to scream out loud "Don't smile! I'm about to leave you!" She had a sip of his orange juice, just like she always did. Moments later, bitter tears gushed out of her beautiful eyes, and questions started to rush in and out of is head. Could it be? Could it be that his wife had found out that he no longer loved her? Could it be that his wife had found out that he has deeply fallen in love with that other beautiful young lady for the past 18 months? With shaking hands, she took out a paper from her oversized bag. It was a paper from her doctor saying that she had Leukemia. He stared at the paper with surprise, and he immediately forgot the reason he had asked her to come to the café in the first place. Then this strange voice within him said "Help her, help her…" And so he did, he sent his mistress a message telling her to forget about him, and instead he stayed with his wife. He spent hours reading her stories, cooking for her, singing along with her, playing with her hair, putting her to sleep, and waking her up. He did everything so perfectly because he knew that any second she would leave. Days, weeks, and months passed by as he took care of her, and by pretending to be in love, he fell in love with her, again… When she finally died in his arms he fell in an emotional coma that he never recovered from, and every time he saw a lady in a red coat his heart fluttered with joy, angst, guilt, and he felt the beauty of painful regret. He missed her, his angel, wearing that red coat…

Even though I've read it before... While reading it this time, I felt every emotion...and the mixed emotions sent a shiver through my spine, and a deep blow in my stomach. You interpret emotions in the best way. Beautiful...

Quite a story. When I was a kid, Ral Donner had a song called "You Don't know What You've Got Until You Lose It". We don't seem to appreciate things until they are being taken away. People search for love in the far reaches of the universe, failing to look in their own back yard. Vince
