Fireworks

Red, yellow, blue.
The fireworks in the sky
Go crackle boom-
And mother-
Like a child,
Scurries
To her room-
For the sounds
Remind her of
Shootings in Beirut
Bombings in Batroun
Other mothers sobbing over their
Children’s tombs
The fireworks in the sky
Go crackle boom-
And the city celebrates
As my mother’s
Cold heart
(Iced with fiery war-)
Thaws with gloom.

This is a striking poem, Maya; it says so much about the trauma of war.
