A Poetry Soup First

Blog Posted:7/19/2020 9:41:00 AM

To me, it's a poetry accomplishment beyond comprehension. For instance, there are relatively few who can write a traditional English/Shakespearean Sonnet correctly in true iambic pentameter and even fewer who can do so while producing unforced and artful poetry. Of those who can, Mark Massey among them, not many have written a Crown of Sonnets, which is 7 sonnets where the last line of each becomes the first line of the next - among other rules. Even more rare are those who have written a Heroic Crown which is 15 sonnets where the final sonnet is made up of the first line of the preceeding 14 with rhyme scheme/form/cohesiveness and poetic art still applying - that's 210 lines of poetry mind you!  BUT, Mark is not stopping there...he is in the process of writing 14 heroic crowns (210 sonnets) and an additional sonnet to equal 2,954 lines of poetry in strict form; that's 14,770 iambic meters! The poets who have ever done this in world history wouldn't fill a short bus, and the poets who have written one about the American Civil War is zero until now. In addition he is using the Gettysburg Heroic Crown as a Volta which is both traditional and clever since the Gettysburg battle was the "turning" point of the war. One of my interests is the civil war and I can say that his depictions are historically accurate in addition to being artfully presented. Any of us would be proud to have written even one of his poems in this epic achievement. The Heroic Crowns he has produced so far are included under the short story section here on Poetry Soup. Bravo indeed Mark!

Mark, I'm so glad you have posted these on your page! Keep them up!!! I'm absolutely blown away by your interpretation of each subject, each specific significant conflict within a particular battle - like where you took the cornfield at Antietam, not only in metaphor but from each philosophical angle - I've stood in the West Woods, the Cornfield, the Sunken Road and they bring chills - your write takes it all home. Thanks for sharing all of this!

Mark, the time you have already taken has been well spent. I think too many, including myself feel we've got to write about this or that and finish it today and then move on - when we haven't really done our art the justice it deserves - what we should expect of ourselves. You hold yourself to those higher standards we all should - excellence is always worth waiting for, so even if it takes 'til the end of next year, so be it.

Justin, Your compositions are epic and deserve to be applauded as well. You took an original path and you are well aware of the intense effort it takes to complete these no matter the form you choose to use.

Craig, cannot find Mark Massey anymore on poetrysoup, I know he did a contest looking for poems to write music for, is that the same Mark? He did write music for a poem by Andrea, that ended up on utube if it is the person I am thinking about, never knew he could actually write poetry himself, maybe it is not the same person- Constance

Thx PT - always love a bit of tart & sting! And Nina "gentameter" is a creative twist, hey, it might become a real word in a couple years - after all, irregardless has been accepted and I think yours is more word worthy shall I say.
