She's always a Woman

Blog Posted by Craig Cornish: 8/5/2024 10:28:00 AM

Relatively few song lyrics are excellent poetry - here's one (note the lack of modifiers)

She's Always a Woman

Song by

She can kill with a smile, she can wound with her eyes
And she can ruin your faith with her casual lies
And she only reveals what she wants you to see
She hides like a child
But she's always a woman to me
She can lead you to love
She can take you or leave you
She can ask for the truth
But she'll never believe
And she'll take what you give her as long as it's free
Yeah, she steals like a thief
But she's always a woman to me
Oh, she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh, and she never gives out
And she never gives in
She just changes her mind
And she'll promise you more
Than the Garden of Eden
Then she'll carelessly cut you
And laugh while you're bleedin'
But she'll bring out the best
And the worst you can be
Blame it all on yourself
'Cause she's always a woman to me
Oh, she takes care of herself
She can wait if she wants
She's ahead of her time
Oh, and she never gives out
And she never gives in
She just changes her mind
She is frequently kind
And she's suddenly cruel
She can do as she pleases
She's nobody's fool
And she can't be convicted
She's earned her degree
And the most she will do
Is throw shadows at you
But she's always a woman to me

Strange thing about this song and perhaps the most poignant part for me, was just the background music (no lyrics) was playing on the concourse between the twin towers 9/11 after they were hit and still standing, not sure if it was pure randomness or some deeper message was at play, I always ponder that moment when I hear this song, check the link below! Cheers David! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ECgPnpGo_Lo

It is pretty eerie when we know now of the impending collapse and loss of life,…… Bill seems to be a very humble man, anyone else would’ve chartered a helicopter, I forgot to add my fav Billy Joel song and lyrics is Piano man, cheers David

Listening to it there.. it's so haunting. On a not so sad note 8th August Billy Joel played his only gig in Europe this year with a concert in Wales. He took a public train from London to play there in front of a capacity 70000 crowd. Cheers - Gary

"She's Always A Woman" is a great track and Billy Joel is a brilliant poet. His "We Didn't Start The Fire" certainly inspired my own attempts at list poems. All that said, I just wish he hadn't recorded "Uptown Girl" ..heck I hate that record...and now, very annoyingly, all I can hear on repeat loop in my head is 'Uptown Girl'. Aaarghh! Cheers - Gary

Haha. He wrote that song being inspired by that model he married. That marriage sure didn't last long!

I wish that last verse were true. I’ve had boots and wine glasses and even a skillet thrown at me. It didn’t feel like shadows to me!

Yep, trouble is I used to zig when I should have zagged. Got it all sorted now. Do they have dodgeball at the Olympics? I could have been a contender!

Well, besides using the word "she" a gazillion times the only other qualm I have is the line, "And she can't be convicted, she's earned her degree." Huh? Now the song Vincent by Don McClean, that's real poetry!

it's almost like a list poem isn't it - a list lyric! it doesn't strike me as being particularly poetic, but 'vincent' is pure poetry, yes

Love that song and Billy Joel's talent. Simon and Garfunkel, Carly Simon, Dylan, John Denver, and so many other songwriters from 60's and 70's wrote lyrics that were like poetry.

I love songs by Billy Joel. This one is beautiful and poetic, indeed. This one is a favorite of mine: ' Just The Way You Are. '
