He Caught Me at Hello - Maya Kaabour's Blog

Last night I went with my sister to a concert at Dubai Media City. As I sat beside her in the front seat of the car, the city's dancing lights sent rays of colorful lights that reflected on me and my clothes. We listened to amazing music and put the volume on high. After 20 minutes of driving, we were about to drive on a bridge that led to two streets. In front of us, was a used car, it looked really old! It was obvious that the people in it were poor. A little kid was sitting in the back seat of the car. His teeth were broken, and dirty. His clothes were ripped and worn out. The little boy looked back at us. "Oh hello there!" my sister said as she started waving to him with a wide smile on her face. Surprised, I stared at her with confusion. After a few seconds, I thought to myself, "What could I possibly lose?! Let me give it a try!" So, I waved to him too. The little boy, waved back… I could see all the hope of the world dwell in his beautiful teary brown eyes. He started waving faster and faster, tears rolled down his smudged cheeks as our cars started to take different directions from the bridge. Not even the loud music in the car was able to stop me from hearing his little heart beat with joy. That pleasant melody gradually faded away. Thoughts rushed in and out of my mind, and that was when I found happiness, something people said never really existed! I found happiness by finding out that the happiest of people do not have every material thing they want, but make the most of what comes along their way. Exactly like that little boy, throwing back smiles and hello's to strangers, just like a river made of pure azure water, generously spreading fertility to the soil, to every plant, every rose that comes along its way…
