Talkin' to Joe

Number 2 in the Uncle Joe series:

Talkin' to Joe

Remember the day we were playing

"Cowboys and Indians" in the barn?

Bert was sittin' on the three-legged stool

Milkin' the old cow.

Sam or you

(Never me, I was always innocent)

Poked that old cow in the butt

With a tobacco stick.

Oh what a shout Bert let out!

We flew to Granny and you yelled

Hide us quick, Mama,

That old man's gonna kill us!

She stuffed us under the

"Company room" bed.

We could always count on her!

Before we go any further, allow me to introduce the people I write about:

Uncle Joe: 4 yrs. older than the poet, raised on a small farm near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Joe was born with Down syndrome, but his gifts much more than his "disability".

Jane or "Miss Emily": me, the poet

Sam: my younger brother and Joe's nephew

Viva: my mother, Joe's sister-in-law.

Chattie or "Granny": Joe's mother, our grandmother

Bert: Joe's father, our step-grandfather.

Hugh: Joe's older brother, our dad.
