Thought I better get round to writing a bit about myself.

I'm married and live on the Isle of Man

My poetry journey began in November 2013 after my husband was diagnosed with cancer. The first poem I wrote was called was Splendid Isolation. This was written after we returned to the Isle of Man after his surgery in England. I felt so alone and vulnerable in the accommodation  - all I really needed was someone to talk to face to face and maybe have a hug! I posted a few poems on a friends facebook page - mainly humerous poems . An on-line friend Jenny Brewer saw my poems and kept telling me to join here. It took about 3 weeks of her asking me if i had joined to pluck up the courage to finally post and 'Just Desserts'  was the first poem I posted here - it is based on a true experience! Since then my life has been a whirl.  In Jared Pickett's collaboration I teamed up with Darren Watson and we wrote together collaboratively as JaDazzle United.

I adore penguins - the animals not the biscuits!
Loveeeee tall men with greying hair
I love baking/cooking
I like to potter in the garden - need more time to commit to it but have an aged mother who needs me more than my garden does
Adore most types of music - will give anything a listen
Best ever gig - Knebworth 1986 when 'Queen' headlined

My Next Contest

Blog Posted by Jan Allison: 7/11/2023 8:34:00 AM

I’m delighted to announce I am re-running the ‘Away in a Manger’ contest which was pulled by the previous sponsor after 6 entries had been posted.

If those poets wish to re submit their original poems to my contest, I intend to give each of them an automatic 1st place in my contest and then judge completely new entries according to my rules.

Jan, if you go to the “Member Admin Area” and look in your personal member home, and select “My Contests,” the eighth bullet point under “Things to Remember when Hosting a Contest” states: “ You may only run one contest at a time (You must FINALIZE and close your current contest before starting a new one).”

Mark that is true, I contacted TPS about this issue and their response was that I could choose to remove or change my poem from the contest. Nothing reflected in their response regarding their contest rules.

You’re right. A clear rule would be best.

Unfortunately Mark the rule doesn't say that the sponsor can't change their mind on a whim after a few entries have been submitted and totally change the contest from the original theme. When WE enter a contest we have to abide by the no names etc rule, so I think it would be prudent if there was a clear rule for sponsors to finish the original contest they started, and if they don't like entries then to simply n/a them. Its really quite unfair not to give a poem a chance when poets work hard to write for a specific contest and theme. I am so grateful to you for allowing me to use your poem as an example, its really fabulous:-) hugs jan xx

I really thought it was a cool topic for a parody poem so I will check out your contest

as long as you follow the 6,5,6,5 you have free rein with themes but i have given some suggestions i dont think its as rigid in topic as the original contest. hugs jan xx

I have an idea. I like that there are so many ways to go with this.

I am glad to learn those 6 poems are going to be acknowledged in your contest, Jan. I know you’d never change themes in mid stream.

Surely, it should work both ways.

Hi Lin, There will only be 5 people who it applied to as I was the 6th and of course I won't enter my own contest. I wish admin had a rule that once a contest was posted the sponsor had to stick to the theme and simply N/A any poems they didn't like and not change it on a whim. . We have to adhere to rules when we enter a contest, surely it works the other way too. hugs jan xx
