Trompe Poems

Caesar’s Serenade

Cleopatra,

I investigate your eyes
through Nile mist that weaves,
jade butterflies that never fly
sable tresses hanging over leopards
bole skin on the border of Venusian dreamcatchers

Gilded diadems dance as burned suns
radiate from golden flakes of your crown
lightning demarcating the border between genius
—	and ambition
wars are fought easier than your heart is won;
Cupid grieves your connections

Great men fear being made lesser by You
       She of the God-like Mind
made Immortal for her Wise Counsel
I’m no prisoner of Fear nor Envy
                                        nor Love
                           only Fate & Chance
Passionate war’s trompe-l’œil

Scar tissue, birthmarks, happy times, and grief
Corrugate man’s brain, a coral motif
Emotions, synapses, signals unknown
Grotesque in nature, splits open when stoned

Still pictures emerge, filling us with dread
Trompe loeil jumps out, turning confused heads
A lasting impression, one little glimpse
Stare any longer, de-evolve back to chimps

Forthright altruism’s meaningful and straight
Love of people dilutes, when mixing faiths
Right angles on a cross, drew germane taste
Master race had its day, now laid to waste

New clear experience, turns sand to glass
Quartz for the reaper, forms in mushroom gas
Colliding atoms, there’s no other way
His sky vaporised, man sure seized the day

drip drip drip drip-feed of life ~ wait a gush all we needed was a knife

Ooh la la, the rose, coronate her beauty.
Her ruffled scent, her hues, dare not refuse.
When petals red, like strawberry-fruity,
and lovey-dovey white, one must persue.
Persistent veil of mist will kiss one’s soul,
will kill one’s love for any forthright bud.
She’s no petulant child, a fine trompe l’oiel.
Commands perfume’d ascent of pulse, life’s blood.
Beneath the fray, a thorn’d adversary
will snag the jugular of swivel-head.
Her red pursed lips, dove-skin, a bit scary.
Don’t be tempted to find another’s bed.
She stands ten feet tall-er than uncut weeds.
She possesses a prowess set that leads.

No Business Like Swamp Business

NO BUSINESS LIKE SWAMP BUSINESS

There’s no business like Swamp faux business
There’s none do such a show
Everything about it is illusion
Everything about it is a lie
Where else could you get such righteous feeling
Than when you’re kneeling; no reason why

This swamp business is trompe business *
Just like a film studio
They can turn the Congress to a fortress though
They’re sitting pretty and in full flow
Like a new production of the Alamo
They go on with the show

There’s no business like Joe business
He knows how to pro quo
Keeps his family well fed in gravy
While he makes out like an average schmo
Long career in congress plagiarising
Politicising
What else to show?

There’s no business like vote business
He hides in basement low
While his thinking got more than a little bent
His words more prone to an accident
Next day in the White House he’s the President
He goes on with the show

* That’s ‘trompe’ (not Trump!) as in ‘trompe d’oeil

Sweet Love of Mine

Walking down the quaint city street entering the sweetshop,
Oh yes! Hershey’s Almond Milk Chocolate tasty flavor
Sweetheart chooses sweet licorice and hot fudge brownie delight,
Sweetie pie and I flavor sweetmeat crystallized fruit.

Sweet tooth such a happy mouth vibrato to have;
Healthy sweet corn with sweet pepper and sweet-and-sour
Rest in front of my Dear Heart and I with a sweet pea,
Sweet cherry edible fruit on ice cream dessert, oh yum!

Sweet sultan annual herb varicolored flower in garden
Touches sweet acacia shrub fragrant flowers for perfumery,
Enjoying sweet basil on my sweet potato pie with my Sugar Love
Sweet nothings sound to wife trompe l’oeil painted photographic reality.

Sweet cicely herb white flowers brighten garden sipping
Sweet cider with cinnamon and raspberry shortbread warm
Soul with endearments, together speaking love honestly husband
Wife meshed together in all things sharing sweet clover; blessed.

Across thIs scenic route a fools gold signpost,
pointing in the wrong direction to some vibrant deep green “plot” that lost its hue on close inspection.
Visionary luscious slope and peak,
giddy silver stream,
harbourmaster of the trompe l’oeil for distant minds who dwell in make belief

We’re rightfully concerned
It seems to be a dark dubious world
We’re bringing you into
Threatening and not so promising
How long can we shelter you from it all
You’re tiny not even able to crawl
A babe not yet in school
Fastforwarding ten years
Can’t even imagine the so called progress
As it is, it’s hard to keep up
Everyone’s on a technology conveyor belt
Though a clever trompe l’oeil
We see veneer attempts to shrink
That gap between the have’s and the have not’s

Thank God
We are only grand-parents
Maybe age, fatigue or nostalgia
Gets the better of us
We seem to have lucked out
Growing up in the hippies era
Sure it had its problems but
It certainly was amazing
Everywhere mostly peace and love
They were the golden years

Thinking back
Seems obvious that the magic element is
Youth, innocence and naiveté

The Little Prince of Our House

Our excitement to have you in our life
That you deserve a regal retreat inside our house
This once dark room spruced up with chic bedroom

With soaring peaked ceiling overlooking your bedroom
The wall with trompe l’oeil effect that’s how you furbished our life
Fixed window overlooking vast vistas of the modern house

Dark mahogany furniture lined up inside the house
A forest-green bed crown to lay down on your bedroom
In vibrant hues, you have transformed our life

How blessed our life that within our house, we built a bedroom for our little prince

Flying

What great perspective flying gives;
The mundane is surreal;
Wide angled eyes so clearly see
Our Earth's greatest appeal.

The land's a patchwork quilt of farms,
And lakes look just like puddles;
The rivers wind like slithering snakes,
And clouds are soft as cuddles.

Like breast of mothers oozing milk,
Snowy mountains proudly stand;
And dots of houses look like salt
Coarsely sprinkled on the land.

The cars all glisten in the sun
Like jewels reflecting light;
Distance, like a trompe l'oeil,
Fools the eye and hides Earth's blight!
