Light Verse
Frozen in his tracks, a white tail deer
hesitates to crack the gilded grass

Crystalline
the deer standing still
stared at me from the bare trees
highlight of white tail

ambulatory itinerant vagabond
nomadic nuisance
feared by some
adored by others
wayfaring wood tick
travels on white tail deer
enjoying his journey and beast’s blood

walnut tree was now slightly blemished
deer had done lots of damage
getting his antlers off
tree did not mind
felt like a willing partner
available every year
he smiled as white tail flew into thicket

Deer
Deer running through the forest,
As graceful as can be,
Her white tail in the air,
Saying "I know you're there",
As majestic as this beast could be,
It will be in great agony,
For the motorized beast has caught it.

A hoarse cough in the thicket
Frightening me. I did not realize
It is the trait of my power animal.
Now I do, so it will be as scary next time.
I saw the beast’s white tail as she leapt the fence.
cough from thicket
white tail deer leaps the fence
power animal

The hour draws late
horse is in the barn
Children tucked in bed
cat's put away her yarn
Moon looms up in the sky
high over mountains and hills
Planes ease onto runways
Elders remove dentures, take pills
Quiet settles into hill and vale
No sighting of deer's white tail

Springtime is here
My favorite time of the year
Its when the flowers begin to reappear
You might even see a white tail deer
Drinking from the mere
The big blue sky is bright and clear
Time to get out your gardening shears
Or maybe even a kite to steer
My favorite time of the year
Springtime and its here!!

Hey you, dog!
With your white tail tipping past my window
Or your face, tricolor, pressed against the glass,
I can see you even in the dark garden,
But now our garden games are past.
The couch stretched out beside me for a day or two,
The water bowl still full and going green.
The door bell rings and I'm alone to answer.
Frankie Boy! Bad dog! I thought I'd be the one to leave.

The dark drives wind-horses.
They enter the car through your eyes
as you side-slip bends,
veer from contorted shadows.
Once, the hind hoof of a doe
slapped at your face,
the Chevy twitched,
it plowed onward
into the frozen hide of the earth.
When you looked through the rear mirror
you saw yourself
prone and trembling on the asphalt,
while the white-tail escaped
through the iron anvil of night.

Blank verse
Late in the afternoon,
long shadows drive in-roads,
between paths of sunlight.
Got my Nikon on.
Locked and loaded.
The white tail just came too close,
got him!
Man did he fly when he heard,
the whir and click of a live camera!
Shot him startled and looking,
shot him leaping.
Took him down
as he disappeared
back into the deep woods.
Man,
I think I will hang
his big old beautiful head
on a wall,
somewhere at the back of my brain
forever.

piper’s heart is full of joy
he scampers the water with joy
the brook gurgles a woodland greeting
balmy light wind twinkles leaves
they frolic in a lively happy way
the day is light, the minnows are dashing
piper scoops up some cool water and takes a drink
his hands are cold now, but worth it
there is a cough. He knows what it means.
He searches, but the woods are a great concealer.
He smiles as he glimpses the tiny white tail
of the deer as she bounds over a thicket

Dusk in the meadow lures a fawn and her doe to the oak tree
Where she butts bird feeders with her snout against the hard trunk.
Yellow and black seeds flow in a stream down to the ground
A small sound startles them
The mother’s tail twitches.
Both turn statuesque
Poised. Waiting.
Listening. They are both staring.
My dog catches sight of them now.
She runs toward them, barking.
They turn and ballet themselves into a thick hedge
The last thing I see is a flickering white tail.
