An amazing perching songbird,
the males are bright, lively and striking to see,
a splash of color in Canada's winter snow.
Can survive in the coldest of temperatures somehow,
to sing beautiful whistling songs
repeated over and over from a bare tree top.
Lacy snow crystals like a cozy duvet
Cover the ground in winter splendor,
I hear the Christmas carols as they play
On my front lawn, carolers; I will render
Hot chocolate from a local vendor.

another foot of snow
the growing girl at the playground
laughs on her tongue, a
surface for the
cold
when blue the nerves in her teeth
another foot of snow
where she could disappear
it follows her footsteps by footsteps
how deeply the snow's
touched
it melts and becomes her skin

There are no answers
to a song that's never heard
as there is no sky
in a blind man's eyes.
They say God loves
but I know that he is love
as he has flooded my tender heart
with golden light from up above.
There is no life that
fails to fade away
as there is no rose
that blooms in winter's storm.
Where we go
we hold in our own hearts
Only truth can snatch us far above

red cardinal chants
leafless boughs sing out
arias of roaring storms ~
snowdrops harmonize
blasts of icy frost
chanting plaintive elegies ~
daphne flowers bloom
short days intone night
with a solstice lullaby ~
fir trees wear white stoles
shadows of springtime
creep into amber twilights ~
bears snore rhythmic dreams

I heard a bird singing
As I was on my way
It led direction for me
As it took my breath away
It warbled cheerfully,
From a tree above the snow
It spread its song gleefully,
What kind of bird, I wanted to know
I heard a bird singing
Its melody surrounded me
I turned in circles bringing,
Each note closer, to be free
It sounded like spring, in winter
A happy, fresh new start
Helping to release the splinter
And heal the pain within my heart
