The laggard oak leaves
skitter like brown field mice
their stem-tails and sharp edges
scratching across the road.
Grates and bushes trap them.
Layering they accumulate
awaiting the recomposition of life....

black shapes skitter across my eyeline
fluid and quick like a cat or a black ink shadow
sometimes in the corner of my eye
sometimes across the street just far enough so I'm
not sure
I wait in the dusk for answers...

Loss For Words
My words fall down and skitter around
like leaves from an autumn tree,
    dry and crinkly.
                   Sapless.
                   Lifeless.
Vestiges of prouder times
when language used to speak my mind....

Scurry scurry, Skitter scatter
Tick tick tick
He found the cheese platter
Resting on jean
Metal in the air
Riding down Beach
Wind in his fur
He has no jacket
Nothing like that
Because he’s a tiny
Little white rat...

Black Cloud Feature
Lost black clouds skitter across the sky
ice backs
reach to connect
black clouds as the blow across my window
heavy rain for days now
lost black clouds blow black against my eyes
I close them
lost in summary
lost in allegory
just
lost...

The Ocean
As the waves of the ocean crash,
Little creatures skitter-skatter pitter-patter past
by the shore.

As they turned around, more waves crashed,
And they pitter-pattered skitter-skattered past
by no more.
Taken back, back...
to the depth of the ocean floor....

Homeless Man
he passes me on the street

the homesless man

with his grimey clothes unruly hair

pockets bulging like terrified eyeballs

eyes skitter about like a trapped animal

guarding his few belongings

what is his story

may have broken a dozen hearts...

Pre-Dawn
Listen to the birth before sunrise
That predawn movement which
Pushes us into the light
Songs dispersing from elm
And maple, spruce and pine
Oak and ash
The skitter across a lawn
The ripples in the pond
The breath escaping our lungs
And it is not yet daybreak...

Wild, Wild West
Magazine ads and newspaper obituaries
skitter across the streets
like tumbleweed in the desert.
Rims the size of carriage wheels roll by.
Everyone's holsters are filled,
even the children carry pistols.
The schools are ghost towns
but the saloons stay occupied.
This is the Wild, Wild West....

Telegraph Poles
Telegraph poles
Derelict each in their own way
Watch the Forest creep around
Mountains watch them rot
Trains skitter past
The River pays no mind
Dragging their wires on the Ground
Useless
Many miss glass eyes
Many hang their arms
Some have fallen
None talk
No more dots and dashes...

Whipping
black ink shapes skitter in the road shade
in the tree shade under bushes into the dark
no streetlight
transform to running ink lines whipping whipping
away from the light
so fast eyes are deceived
yet every night under the moon
ink shapes skitter and shiver in place
race
past all we know...

Rapid Transit By Miracle Man August 30, 2020 My mind is like a playground, where endless thoughts skitter rapidly. Pining to be heard they appear unbound, but few morph into words, to be displayed in ink. When the bell rings and recess ends, most vaporize, because they stink.

Ifog Cloud
they come like little pawed feet
gathering strings and yarns of life
silently sitting on their haunches
eager to peek further in the door
'til hounds arouse to nip at bytes
and paws skitter and move on

As Night Decends
As night decends on the town
murmers skitter through out the grounds
knowing that night will be here for awhile
daylight will come just before denile
and the bags of bones that lie underneath your bed
give you the sense of never ending dread
so embrace the night that tucks you in tight
until you see the first ray of sunlight...

Setting Sun of countryside,
Ducks skitter in lake,
Picnic basket, kids relish

Taking turns for the frisbee,

Exciting trills of Robin,
water splash of pool.

Beachwalking
I walk barefoot on the beach
Where the water greets the land.
Waves with their wet fingers reach,
Then retreat from where I stand.
White foam fizzles on the sand.

I pick up some rocks and shells,
Watch the shorebirds dive and fly
As the ocean ebbs and swells,
Plovers skitter, seagulls cry,
Soundless pelicans glide by.
