Showers

Lovely is the rain
Streaming down on my lanai
Quickly starts to wane
Trees perk up and flowers sigh
Never even knowing why

School Humour

We're waiting
For the school radio to start,
Then hear four pips,
Teacher quips
"What does that mean?"
I perk up
"He's just eaten an apple"
Class collapses.
One of the first
Funny things I'd said
And quite possibly
One of the last.

Vitamin B12
The perk up pill
But are you my friend?
Will you kick up my energy?
A notch or three?
Today or tomorrow or will you take a week?
Vitamin B12
Stay right here
Talk to me
Give me your word
You will help me get my energy back.

I Sense Them Before I See Them

Faeries flutter and stutter
My ears perk up
I sense them more than I see them

They slowly come into view
My peripheral vision gets the first glimpses
Dainty and determined

One notices I see them.
Poof. They are gone.
Shy as a daisy chain.

Green Tea Joy

Every day
   I sip green tea
with sweetener
   Supposed to be good for
one's health
Indeed I think it is !
Tea is a marvelous beverage
   Allows one to "perk up"
During a hectic day
   I enjoy the taste of
it
And said to a local barista
"Green tea is the elixir of life"
       He smiled
I believe I might be right!

children perk up at the end of a school day

Children who can barely keep their eyes open after lunch
Whose feet shuffle and drag, as they cluster into a bunch
Yawners who struggle to not lie down and flat out snore
When class is annoying, dull, uninteresting or just a total bore
rally at the end of the day with a hip hip hooray
Running swiftly away from the building with pep, perk and play!

Trilling

It's such a thrill to hear the trill
Of birds up in the trees.
The notes just spill from every bill
In melodies to please.

With every frill the backyards fill,
A concert most delightful.
Their innate skill means hearers will
Perk up at every biteful.

We know the drill - they'll sing until
They stop; it isn't for us.
Then all is still and we would kill
To hear just one more chorus.

Rx

When you feel off
With sneeze or cough,
It’s sometimes hard to think
That come the dawn,
At day’s first yawn,
You’ll be back in the pink.

For only fools,
When illness rules,
Expect to perk up quick;
‘Cause lots of rest
Is what works best –
No less will do the trick.

To rush, perhaps,
You could relapse
And then you’ll pay the price –
In bed once more,
Worse than before
And stuck with ailing twice.

My Guinea Pig

My guinea pig
With the black and brown stripes
And the eyes big and black like space
And tiny little ears
That perk up when he hears the food come.

My guinea pig
Who sits on my lap
As I read, or just watch him
As he shifts tring to find a comfortable position
As he squeaks
In happiness
Or annoyance
Or a thousand other emotions

My guinea pig
Who eats all day
And all night
And when he's done
He eats some more

Roots

I water my plants
With my watering cup
And the soil becomes wet
As the roots drink it up.

The leaves, once a‘wilt
On their stems stand up straight
And I’m glad that their drink
Didn’t reach them too late.

Just like plants, we have roots
Which, when starved, make us droop
And at times, we’ll perk up
With some chicken-type soup.

But for humans, some kindness
Can have that effect,
Though it isn’t the cure
We should always expect.

Artic Hunter

Slow sleek steps,

Pounces on its paws,

Snow-clad fur,

Brushes off impatiently,

Ears perk up,

When squeals and squeaks are heard,

Steady and slowly,

Merges with the blanket beneath,

Almost at ease,

Confidently it please,

Lowers into its position,

Ready to strike,

Pounces on its paws,

Announces in its jaws,

Mouse struck beneath its claws,

Ounces in vigilant strides as it withdraws.

Some Noises

Some noises startle, jolt or jar
While others soothe or soften.
We perk up for the new but tune out
Those we hear quite often.

To locals, city sirens make
The tiniest impression
But visitors consider them
A barbarous transgression.

The hum of traffic rolling by
To urbanites equates
With cricket chirps or chickadees
In countryside debates.

The noises that surround us
Are as varied as our homes
Or the subjects and the wording
Of a plethora of poems.

Join In

There is no tomorrow
There’s never that day
Today is always our present
So, forget about sorrow
Just perk up and play
No time to sit and lament

I, too, have self pitied
I’ve cried and I’ve stewed
But, now I truly know better
So, wake up your city
Lest, dare not be rude
Just be a determined go getter

The point I am making
Is to never sit back
Come on, jump into the game
From life you’ll be taking
You’ll then be on track
As again, you won’t be the same
