the rattle of scree

rolling away from the sea

I've wished for long to be like them -
a billion years to be a gem,
but I'm only a pebble,
alone, plain and unnoticed.
Now I know where I belong -
in this boy's pocket.
I am the pebble,
Tossed to the open sea.
I am the rivulets,
Resounding openly.
I am the tiny raft,
Tossed to and fro about.
I float above the surface,
The waves they want me out.
Form:
On a lonely shore crowded with people
I dropped a pebble into a rock pool
Saw ripples obliterate the sky
Smothering voices of Yates and Goldsmith
Gods are not heard in underwater minds
a pebble skips when it’s smooth
sinks when it’s not
like a child’s first ballet
flights of fancy her thoughts

inclement hillside
a single, joyful cube skips
