you locked
up shadows
in old chests
with rusty hinges
and ramshackle fittings
those fields of tulips
seemed steeped
in blood & the weight
a thousand years
suspended from
ropey tendrils swathed
in straw , live twine
the poplars wresting
sudden gales from
the coast
their tall outlines
accusing the ochre wastes
beyond and the striated
skies while swathes
of linnets sweep by
screechings , wings aflutter
hastening the dusk
premonitions of thunder head
down the headlands streaming

Black Rose was her name,
a pirate ship of great fame,
she sailed the Cretan seas,
of turquoise blue, so un-tame,
crashing through the high waves,
sea air in our hair,
salt and rum on our tongue
singing songs old & young,
hell, it was great fun!
our backs heated by the sun
on the ropey rigging we hung,
with sword and pistol gun,
deep sea swim,
till the sunset dims,
a pirates life for us, it's our hymn!

Leany Reany was so cleany,
She bathed five times a day,
She washed herself with ropey soapy
After every little play.
Dirty Burty was so shirty
When he had to take a shower,
He washed himself with muddy buddy,
Never smelling like a flower.

The coral crumbles, and paradise is overthrown in sand
And they pour the children into it like water upon tongues
What the breeze blows in my eyes cannot blind my tears
Your captains do not know the shoals like me, I dreamed awake
Among the reefs, before the breakers plundered everything
I long now to hold your rudder, but time has rot the ropey ladder
Night and day, high tides and low, I sob to mount the slippery deck
Where the tropic spray may slap may face and brace me to the plank
Until I dock the fairest ship in history's fairest weather
