The little girl sat alone on the step
Thinking of what she had said and done
Sad and alone, she needed a friend
Gladly there appeared just the one
A cold nose and a friendly lick
Her dog snuggled up without question
As always he needed no explanations
There with the greatest of canine affection
Inspired by his 1878 picture- Sympathy

Jesus Christ in the wilderness
All alone as the sun rose red
Fighting His battle of humanness
Jesus Christ in the wilderness
To save man~ Christ's devoutness
Although the bloody cross His dread
Jesus Christ in the wilderness
All alone as the sun rose red

After I thought a while it seemed clear
it wasn’t the yap, yap, buzz, ring, chat
that drove him away from the city.
Nor the police alarm yaw-yahing
saying danger or someone hurts.
It was the hands. Hands reaching
to touch his face, his hands, head.
Hand to rub his belly or grip his shoulder.
Hands coming from above, or below,
little squirts tugging at his clothes.
Once away into the hidden places
where no one lives the animals peeked
so further he went, seeking grit
to rub against, hard stone for bed,
the cold of stars above in the night.
A place where lizards basked from afar--
other survivors looking for a drink of water,
a drink of alone to coil within breast,
for weariness to weight the legs
heart pumping alone, be still, find grace
with the end of the tolling bells.
Where self is a light to breathe upon
let flare into true soul, the space
where heart flares out like a beacon
for all to hold and when you’re ablaze
there’s none to say they are you they.
Just peace. Belief. Tomorrow rising
with a hunger that goes beyond feed
goes beyond trust, goes beyond life
to a beauty amazed to find where once
having found blaze it never goes out
ready to hand out and hand out.

Long Rest
(Contest entry)
(Requiescat by Briton Rivière)
Oh master why's your rest so long
Command and I'll obey
You lay there post your victory
And at your side I'll stay
I seen them lift you from the field
Of combat when you fell
My Knight you lay there peacefully
Their treatment did you well
The soldiers armed from war they lay
Your sword apon your chest
The peasants come and you they saw
Completely battle dressed
Their eyes were filled with tears but I
Attention will hold true
For my commander I will yield
Respect that he is due
No movement yet, but I will wait
Beside this makeshift bed
Until the moment you arise
To pat me on my head
I brace my paws my noble lord
In hope that I'll prevail
My pride it becons me stand tall
Instead my hind legs fail
Oh master why's your rest so long
Command and I'll obey
You lay there post your victory
And at your side I'll stay

Gov'ners were jealous and zealous the satraps -
One had received uncalled-for promotion.
With design to malign, these guys enacted
a divine trap for this fella's devotions.
"Accept this new law," they said, "Except to you,
O Great King, no petitions can be uttered."
A crusade to degrade, they watched Dan's window,
As he stepped up and prayed, boldly un-shuttered.
Their wily ruse worked and while he was kneeling,
they trotted off to the king and tattled.
Daniel was content to be pent up with lions,
but King Darius spent the night rattled.
Unarmed and unharmed, Dan stayed with the beasts.
In the morning, the king raced to the hole.
The lions in a daze; sudden praise he spoke,
"I'm amazed, God has delivered you whole."
Hear futile complaints among brutal beasts;
Officials are punished with fear and trembling.
They take a fair turn in the lair as ordered
God takes care of revenge for dissembling.
(dissembling means misleading)
based on the account in Daniel 6:1-24
to accompany the painting by Briton Riviere, Daniel's Answer to the King,
it seems Daniel continues to pray to his God inside the lion's den

Briton Reiviere has portrayed
A boy of low means, no shoes to his feet
Clothes are of rags, dirt his blanket
Except for a scraggy mutt.
His only friend, his warmth, protector.
Together they survive
Whatever life throws at them
So tired, so hungry, so friendless
They are a unit within themselves.
Sun will be their salvation
A river is their bathroom
Their watering hole
Place to keep cool
A boy and dog of nature
working as one reliant on each other
Their food provide by mother earth
fruit, nuts, healthy but not always filling
The dog is adapt at finding himself mice
They answer to no-one but themselves.

Being a queen is not so great
always under the spotlight
never a moment to relax
so many people fawning
Ah, but few who are real friends
most just after what they can get
the lonely life is what I lead
as I tend to state duty's
My life is like a fish bowl
I am always on display
yet I must smile and wave
to my subjects as I pass
Bed is the only time to myself
there only can I take repose
shut out my kingdom for now
then back to sit on my lonely throne
From there I can see my portrait
painted by the great Briton Riviere
depicted in front of my ladies in waiting
I sit suffering , as I rule in loneliness
