Preverbal Poems

Before the Language of the Senses

Touch me
where I do not tremble.

Make of me a scent
without a name.

Let sound become
what breath once was
before it learned to speak.

Let the tongue
forget
its hunger.

Listen to me
with the skin of thought.

I seek no salvation,
only time
that vibrates
beneath the skin.

Sparrows

My head is growing light bulbs
the illuminance is very low
I ape the cries of crows
in their gilded cages
I am a coward to myself
vicariously living only half my life
climbing preverbal fences and hedges
I've never known my age

Premium MemberParent Fostering Integrity

Parenting defiant trauma
attached to both hurt child
and wounded parent
needing to continue
co-invested relationships,
positive and constant,
without breaks
in healthy communication,
direct
and, if possible,
playful

Counteracting fear
that both TraumaChild
and I
will pressure ego-me
to choose a Win
for Self
to lose relationship
by distancing from Other;

To choose Me
over We.

I want to choose both Defiance
and Deep Listening
playing win to win together
co-passionate,
positive,
healthy communication

Frustrated by
Lose-Draw-Win
triage decision-making

As if emotionless withdrawn
leftbrain dominant verbal communication
could out-perform
actively hoping
for contagious preverbal resilience,
resonant companionship,
mutual enjoyment,
bonded courage,
cultural curiosity
re-educating accurate empathy.

Rhythm of Belonging

‘neath rational crust
life’s essence intuitive
preverbal rhythms
swaying trees, surging water
heart swells infinite, grasps roots

God Gave Us Southern Living

God Gave Us Southern Living

Many great things to us, God is giving
One such a thing was Southern living
Preverbal place and always in style
Don't put self through period of denial.

In South much and a lot has occurred
With their luscious living are reassured
Can live like a King or a Queen for a day
When willing to do things Southern way.

Flowers everywhere will forever flourish
And great food is guaranteed to nourish
All awaits and for you it will all befall
Must meet and greet South's beckon call.

When you want shade where you can slumber
See cantaloupe and watermelon with cucumber
Down your rapid pace should start to slow
South truly is perfect place for you to go.

James Serious Mysterious Horn
Retired Veteran

PS. So area can establish a Southern connection,
In local paper should put a poetry section.

When Did Loving Us Stop

When did we grow a part
Surely there can be no date assignment
Nor can a time of the hour or minute placed
When did we become selfishly alone
Preferring the singular to the plural in tone
When did loving each other take the preverbal back seat
With vain wisdom filling our hearts
When did touching excite no more
The sensations callused by prideful numbness
When did thoughtfulness tenderness and kind words
Thus exchanged for screaming hurtfulness and distraught
When did trust slip away as sand in an hour glass
Spying each other- knowing it could not last
When did honor turn into threats
Threats of self-preservation by disarmament
When did our breath die to seek servitude as one
As passion was placed into a closet – we entered the ring
When did love stop- we now needing new air
When did we die and we simply did not care
...
