I can hear beyond the human ears,
Long before danger has a chance to come near,
Waiting and watching over all I care for,
I am able to observe and see so much more,
I seem fairly simple and yearn for affection,
Yet, I don’t let this get in the way of ensuring my family’s protection,
Give me a bone and some extensive space,
I’ll be occupied for hours and let none of it go to waste,
Put me in a predicament where I must hunt or retreat,
And watch as my paws move to an undomesticated beat,
My ancestors are warriors and their blood runs through me,
I will be your best friend and defender until we reach eternity,
I will comfort you when you’re sad and the world has been unkind,
For a man’s soul mate at times is hard to find,
Please refrain from putting me in degrading dog shows,
For I was born to be part of the family not feed barbaric egos,
When man uses me to fight for their own personal gain,
It enrages my feelings and makes me insane,
I long for a mate and would like my own pups
So please don’t waste your money stitching me up
When summer is scorching and my coat is too thick
Water me down so I don’t get sick
And please do not dress me in tight silly clothes
It makes me feel violated, restricted and exposed.

To all My Dogz
Diane’s dog Charlie is her baby; more than her son ever was.
He likes me better than Stewart did too, she tells me.
Charlie’s therapy appointments are on Monday.
On Tuesdays he has his nails groomed or his teeth flossed.
Wednesdays are open for luncheon engagements with other pups.
He gives me a break on Thursdays, Diane tells us. It’s my free day.
Friday’s are for Charlie’s aerobic and line dancing.
Saturdays he has yoga.
What’s Charlie’s Sunday schedule? I ask her.
Diane looks surprised that I asked.
We go to church in color-coordinated clothing.
I take him in a little matching case.
I should have guessed.
I see the foot petal shaped like a bare foot and I remember.
Summer of 1971, white jeans, pink shirt, driving to beaches.
I smell the fish in the water, memories flood back instantly.
Your hazel eyes, and the way you look at me as if I am candy.
Memories upon memories happen; they chase each other.
The lavender blanket, the green straw hat, how I loved you.
How you adored me. Summer of 1971, never to be replicated.
We were one, you and I; I never got that again. Did you?
I had never had a TV dinner until that summer; they are bad.
Better now but we did not care. When I close my eyes I can see carrots.
They were cut into tiny squares, abnormal, surreal on fake tin.
Swanson chicken pot pies, we consumed them like they were candy.
My car had a hole through the floor under the foot pedal.
Remember that? You thought it was wicked; for me it was normal.
We laughed about everything, and spoke of things above our head.
Neither of us understood the horrors of the Viet Nam War yet.
We had survived the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King and JFK.
We had seen the church in Birmingham bombed with four little girls.
We did not grow up in innocent times, but summer of 1971 was innocent.
We were fresh, new, eager young pups, exploring unfamiliar territory.
The sun, the moon, and the stars were on our side; we felt magical.
We were one that summer; a mystical time. This foot pedal reminded me.
I thank God that memories of you at 20 came flooding back, it is a gift.
In this time of uncertainty, it made me smile and sign as I remember us.
Originally meant to be transported as a Mother’s Day gift
Yet, Alillie … a lovable Doggie, remained with us due to travel rift
Giving each one, through her lovely mirth, a day’s cheerful lift…
…And since then, from our care, she’s never has been adrift.
Against deadly virus, she emerged the lone survivor
With guarded immune system, becoming a victor
Overcoming grievous pest as courageous warrior
Bearing Animal Welfare Society’s stamp of valor.
Midst her circumspect ardor is her prevailing sweetness
Delighting us by her petting graciousness
Enjoyed likewise by her family of mongrels in their closeness
Influencing cats and kittens around warm gentleness.
Maximizing well her motherly role, already proven
She feeds her new batch of bouncing pups in her haven
Exemplifying great nurturing, love-driven
Inspiring my life-building fervor that’s mercy and truth-woven.
Blessed to experience good relationship with pet of companionship-nature
I thank the Lord for great partnership --- bereft of selfish gesture
Indeed, Alillie is God’s gift, beautified along her tamed beast* culture
Showing gratitude while behaving well in her trained elegant stature.
*Proverbs 12:10 A righteous man regardeth the life of his beast…

She sought refuge in
The backyard shrub;
Dad, there is an Alsatian in the shrub;
Armed with pebbles
I chased her away.
Dad, that Alsatian is back,
I armed myself with pebbles
Second and third,
She fled.
Fourth time i retraced
My confused fear and anger,
I gave her food;
She did not eat;
On return, she had eaten.
Dad, that Alsatian is sitting
On the couch, telly staring;
Get out of here, I shouted,
She went out obediently.
Lost Alsatian, the advert read;
She sits on couches,
Stares telly.
Pretty left me four
Beautiful pups, she is nowhere
To be found:
Oh, my Pretty Alsatian,
Where are you?
I miss the security and fondness
You brought me!
I am White Cloud, chief of an Algonquin tribe in Maine
This is a dedication to my pup “Keeitai” memories I retain
I forward myself, I shall speak of the meeting of Keeitai
As a young brave, striving manhood, I was sent to the forest alone
With bow in hand I could be a man with-in my fathers’ eye
Mother Grizzly protecting her young, kills mama wounds dad
A timber wolf cries to the sky, howling my wife has died
I follow as he leads me to his den; the beginning of the end
The fresh earth smells of death,4 baby pups given to the Spirit
The whimper in the blackness of death a pup had survived Keeitai
Never before had I heard such sorrowful baying, as his father died.

Dedicated to Au Poivre my Shepherd, my Puppy for 17 years
To My First Dog
Long asleep in your unknown grave,
My companion, loyal and beloved
Throughout my youth’s growing years,
You cannot know nor now see
How you do still bring tears to me
With memories haunting
Of the ways our friendship yet remains.
Asleep so still…
With fury has over a half-century passed
Since daddy took me to choose you
From a wriggling, yipping litter of
Nine-week-old, black and tan, mutt pups
On a straw-strewn wooden platform set
Against a pet store’s window…All of you
Squirming and…begging
For a child about age nine — like me —
To come pointing, excitedly…begging,
“That one!”
As our black eyes met
— yours directly melting into mine —
Glinting great hopes…
(Remember? )
Now even there ~
In heaven’s waiting while dreaming,
In your halcyon grave’s space ,
You cannot know nor wonder
How love survives still
Holding onto smiles past the tears that grief brings
For a long and deep heart’s treasuring.

Thanks be to God———
As a child I had recurring dreams
Of Indians, death and gorilla themes.
The Indians rode on painted ponies,
So real they seemed, they couldn't be phonies.
Turned out they were real and scouts to boot,
My Dad was tapped out, ain't that a hoot!
The gorillas were loud and right outside,
I cried to Mom, I had to confide.
One morning she woke me and said "Listen up!"
My gorilla was only two bird dog pups!
But the worst of all was my dream of death,
I was dying or dead and couldn't catch breath!
Just how would I die and when would it be?
Turns out I'd have to wait years to see.
Mom said, "Never fear, for Jesus is here."
"Just pray to The Lord, and keep Jesus near."
Soon the dreams faded, gone from my life.
Understanding my dreams, had lifted my strife.
The sun does arise,
On the valley sweet,
The birds & pups wise,
Call our kits to meet.
The hoots & hollers,
Sound loud for miles;
Yet! Amiss is one collar,
Lone in the Sky Isles.
The sun does down,
On the green hills tired,
Lining the vale round,
Our pets to bed retired.
The whistles & purrs,
Chime in the crisp wind.
All but one bed stirs;
Our dear numbers thinned.
Long time does pass,
Bleak winter does come,
Hoar-frost is the grass,
Warmed by a low hum.
We stand together,
Upon valleys sharp,
Wond’ring: ‘just whether,
You’re hearing, fain, the sky harp.’
I prance eagerly toward a new destination
Meeting enthusiasm and hope in the form of a stranger
We share our stories, expanding the goodness of a universal soul.
I am refreshed, eager to take on another day
Due to replenishing myself with a fresh, new people
Who enlighten me, revealing positivity and enthusiasm.
I no longer worry about running from those
Who zapped my strength, leaving me in a ditch to die
under a layer of anger, rage, sadness and misfortune
They are busy recruiting eager like-minded pups
As I race toward new opportunities, expecting the best
Choosing to save myself
