To My First Dog

To My First Dog Long asleep in your unknown grave, My companion, loyal and beloved Throughout my youth’s growing years, You cannot know nor now see How you do still bring tears to me With memories haunting Of the ways our friendship yet remains. Asleep so still… With fury has over a half-century passed Since daddy took me to choose you From a wriggling, yipping litter of Nine-week-old, black and tan, mutt pups On a straw-strewn wooden platform set Against a pet store’s window…All of you Squirming and…begging For a child about age nine — like me — To come pointing, excitedly…begging, “That one!” As our black eyes met — yours directly melting into mine — Glinting great hopes… (Remember? ) Now even there ~ In heaven’s waiting while dreaming, In your halcyon grave’s space , You cannot know nor wonder How love survives still Holding onto smiles past the tears that grief brings For a long and deep heart’s treasuring. Sally, I read your poem and trying not to cry as my grandbabies eat their snacks at the other end of my dining room table, they may ask why, and they too would find it hard not to cry over your sweet loving tribute to your first fur baby. I too still grieve the precious darling canines and felines I pray meet me on the other side of this life. Hugs to you, and thank you for loving your sweet pooch so much, even after fifty years <3

I feel you, grief lingers and its is the memories that keep them close to our heart and soul! The way you express and describe things is so poignant and flawless! I especially felt the ending the most, “ In your halcyon grave’s space , You cannot know nor wonder How love survives still” made me tear up as i read those lines! I can tell this comes from a deep place! So good to see you posting. Sending you light always

What a beautiful, loving tribute dear Sally in memory of your past, beloved dog. So wonderfully captured and remembered. The very first line tugs at your heart strings that’s for sure. ‘ As our black eyes met’ ‘ yours directly melting into mine’ so lovely. The last verse is powerful and full of love and so poignant. Just love that last line. Thank you for sharing. Hugs to you for a lovely weekend xx :):)

This has so many touching memories of your first pup and how much that means to you even all these years later, I too am a dog lover and remember my first one also with both love and sadness, also like your descriptive lines like 'straw strewn wooden platform' and 'yours directly melting into mine' - that made me smile :)

I am not an expert on dogs but I believe they have a different life span than ours. Nonetheless, you will never forget your first pet and rightly so. Blessings.

such a heartfelt and gut-wrenching remembrance of your beloved pet. I loved how you told the story of how the two of you met. You feel in love instantly. That love remains forever. I, too, had a beloved pet...a Dachsund named Fritz von Etgen. I can still see his wiggly body and feel his Doxie fur as I stroked his back. Miss him still. Have a pleasant day, Ms. Sally.
