The Great Lakes - Part Three

An alternate track is via the Illinois River
(from Chicago), to the Mississippi, up the Ohio,
and then through the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway
(combination of a series of rivers and lakes and canals),
to Mobile Bay and the Gulf. Commercial
tug-and-barge traffic on these waterways is heavy.

Pleasure boats can also enter or exit the Great Lakes
by way of the Erie Canal and Hudson River in New York.
The Erie Canal connects to the Great Lakes
at the east end of Lake Erie (at Buffalo, New York)
and at the south side of Lake Ontario (at Oswego, New York).

Statistics:
The Great Lakes contain 21%
of the world’s fresh surface water: 5,472 cubic miles
(22,810 km3), or 6.0×1015 U.S. gallons (2.3×1016 liters).

This is enough water to cover the 48 contiguous U.S. states
to a uniform depth of 9.5 feet (2.9 m).

Although the lakes contain a large percentage
of the world's fresh water, the Great Lakes supply
only a small portion of U.S. drinking water
on a national basis (roughly 4.2%).

Winter 2009–10 somewhat mild, the precipitation
was below normal for the Great Lakes Basin.
Mean lake levels are thought to be slightly
below or at their levels of 2009.

An ice jam in February 2010 dropped
the level in Lake St. Clair. Since the jam
was removed the level has come back
to its average.

As of March 2010, the lakes were at the level,
or slightly below, where they were in March 2009.

The combined surface area of the lakes
is approximately 94,250 square miles
(244,100 km2)—nearly the same size
as the United Kingdom, and larger than
the U.S. states of New York, New Jersey,
Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts,
Vermont, and New Hampshire combined.

The Great Lakes coast measures approximately
10,500 miles (16,900 km); however,
the length of a coastline is impossible
to measure exactly and is not
well-defined measure (see Coastline paradox).

The Great Lakes - Part One

Pellucid pearls in northeastern North America
since planetary birth
Comprise Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron,
Erie, and Ontario dearth
Largest group of freshwater lakes on Earth
Straddle Canadian–United States border
tethering partial global girth
Constituting 21% of world's surface
fresh water species hearth
Total surface equals 94,250 square miles
And total volume equals
5,439 cubic miles immeasurable worth.

Lake Erie from Erie tribe, abridged form
of Iroquoian word erielhonan “long tail”
Lake Huron named by French explorers
for Wyandot or “Hurons” whence they did sail
Lake Michigan likely from Ojibwa word mishigami
“great water” aka outsize gold quail
Lake Ontario i.e. “Lake of Shining Waters”
shimmering like hammered coat of mail
Lake Superior coined from French
“lac supérieur” "upper lake", an emerald watery dale
Ojibwe people called it gitchigumi medicinal
to cure that, which might ail.

These five lakes each reside in separate basin
Form a single, naturally interconnected body
of fresh water caisson
Linking east-central interior of North America
to Atlantic Ocean akin to an escutcheon.

From interior to outlet at St. Lawrence River,
Water flows via Superior to Michigan-Huron
southward to Erie to avoid a shiver
Finally released northward to Lake Ontario
as like a well taut archer with his quiver.

The lakes drain a large watershed via many rivers
as an Olympic team
Populated with approximately 35,000 islands
this estimate not x stream.

The Great Lakes region contains
many thousands of smaller lakes,
Often called inland lakes undulating
in cascading analogous to a fluid ream
Lake Michigan the only one located
entirely within United States
While the others border between
United States and Canada – essentially a liquid seam.

Premium Member GNRT DAY 32 A LITTLE HISTORY

Today as we traveled from Michigan into Canada
across the twin cities of Salt Ste. Marie….
on the 300 miles of this journey…we learned a little more history….

The name Canada most likely came from the Huron-Iroquois word Kanata
meaning village or settlement…
A frenchmen used it to name the entire country
before the Hurons could tell him exactly what it meant.

We are currently near Lake Ontario which also got it’s name from the Iroquois.
The legend says from an Iroquois chief’s daughter
who when she saw the lake said kandario…which means sparkling water.

We have been on Lake Superior…named Gitchi-Gami by the Ojibwe
this means Big Sea Water…and she is a beautiful lake
In Longfellow’s poem Hiawatha…he called it Gitchi-Gumi by mistake.

We have felt the waters of Lake Michigan…a little boat trip we did take….
the Anishinabe called it mishigami …which simply means…big lake

We have driven my Lake Huron another beautiful place to be.
The Wyandot called it karegnondi which roughly translated means
freshwater sea
.
And we spend the next 2 days on Nipissing Lake…meaning little water
A name the Ojibwe chose to keep
because the crystal clear waters of this lake are not so very deep

It seems all around us on this trip…we’ve seen and tried to understand
how we travel over the footprints or on the shoulders
of those who first walked this land.

We have gained a new appreciation…of all they saw
the mountains, the rivers, the lakes…the plains and the buffalo too
of how they lived…of their philosophy…and of all they have gone through,

We offer them our thanks
we only wish we could go back in time…and change our history….
and we wonder if things had played out differently….
what kind of beauty in our world the would see.

Unspoken Tragedy

In upstate N.Y., off lake Ontario.
Haunting my dreams, this memory.
Here's the scenario

A cold mild breeze blows
on this Saturday in mid October.
Nine friends decide on the town carnival
Drunk, high, far from sober.
Every town had a carnival
in the October month.
We'd try for every one of them,
young men out on the hunt.
Moderate sized carnivals
containing the different towns,
all types of people came.
You had your jocks, thugs, and me..
The class clown...

All nine friends stylishly dressed
for the upcoming fun.
We pile into a Monte' Carlo,
passing the bottle of Bacardi rum.
We drive down Cetenary road
on the southeast side of town.
Our driver gains reckless speeds,
not thinking of our safety.
He comes to a screeching halt
at the intersection of Cetenary and Lake
He seemed to be excited
about the right turn he was about to make

Hard he presses the gas pedal,
the tires begin to spin
The rear starts radically fishtailing
the nightmare now begins.
First storming to the right
a voice screams out
"OH S#%T"
He jerks the wheel, now left.
We're now heading for a ditch.
At that moment all went black,
screams turned into whispers.
When my consciousness regained
what I saw sent spinal shivers.
Broken, blood stained glass,
seven bodies laying limp.
Skull fragments on the steering wheel,
I couldn't come to grip.

Nine friends set out intoxicated
This late October day
Taken by ambulance for treatment
And an overnight, extended stay

It doesn't matter where we go
as long as we're together.
Surrounded by kids and grandkids
Laptop replaced by the kids.
Going to the land of the Maple trees
To refresh and revive the earlier visits
Of Niagara, the Antiope of Canada
To see the migrating birds in Pelee island
Humming with cicadas in the summer.

To have the birds’ eye view from CN Tower
The 2nd highest observation deck in the world
A treat to see the mist across Lake Ontario
From the renowned Niagara Falls.
Watching men navigate their way
Across the glass floor and on nice days
When the roof is open on the Rogers center
Watching League Ball game hundreds of meters below.

And never to be missed Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum
A major point of architectural interest in the city,
One of the largest museums in North America.
And how one can miss The Eaton center
The massive Mall, a home to over 200 stores
As the evening draws by, a-must for a visitor
The Distillery District, center for the city’s theatre
The area boasting many performance venues
And the official home of many theatre companies.
One can wander freely through pedestrian-only streets
Exploring the art studios and gallery spaces
Till the late hours of the night, before going to sleep.

Travelling for me is not just seeing the new
But the places you can see anytime shutting your eyes.

Overthinker

Yes I Admit I Am An Overthinker

Things Were Complicated And I Was A Tinker

I Was Fed Up Of Those Darkest Days

That Ruined My Harvest In All The Ways

I Also Admit I Wasted A Lot Of Time

In Useless Things That Were At Prime

But Now Movies And Shows All I Discard

For Me It Is All Like A Big Junkyard

Because The Reality Of Life Hits Me Hard.

I Was Amazing At Imaging Fake Scenario

That Started From A Fish And Ended At Lake Ontario

Since I Was Lost In Deep Imagination

My Soul Was Full Of Dissatisfaction

Comparing Best Outcome, With A New Possible Outcome

This Cycle Continues Without Any Fragmentation

Sporadically I Used To Hold One Thought,

A Random Thought That I Never Sought

That Used To Grind My Peaceful Mind

And Make Me Feel A Little Distraught.

I Became Too Much Lazy To Respond

In This Disease Of Over-Scrutiny

I Achieved Nothing But Lost Many Good Bonds

But Now I Am Trying To Change Myself

Seeking Deep Inside And Find Oneself

Who Was Once Passionated And Addicted

Towards His Hobby And Career Goals.

OCTOBER 6, 2022

Fall in the Finger Lakes,
a meeting in Canandaigua,
a nature reserve visit on West Hill
north of Naples, the season at early
peak, all the colors including green,
the thick, deep forests of the Allegheny
Plateau chasing the underfunded farms
North to Lake Ontario
Back up on Interstate Ninety,
heading home to Syracuse, farm and forest
blowing by, tractor-trailers slightly menacing
at over seventy miles per hour, global commerce
heading home to Portland, Maine and Boston,
to the Port of New York City, the territory
in-between drenched in the colors of confident
change, fanning the flames of our faith
in the future, calling attention to the
numinous rhythms of this beautiful place
where we live!

OSWEGO, NEW YORK

The summer sun was setting
and the urban landscape
where the river flowed north
into the last Great Lake settled
into quiet, the working class burghers
and their beautiful families finally
relieved of endeavor and stress
The northwest breezes caressing the
waters turned reflected street lights
into shimmering diamonds that made
the city seem rich under a golden blue,
orange blue, cobalt blue sky, then black
sky and quiet, a hint of prayer and
promise and a community finally at rest,
the kind of Saturday night that a
Sunday morning deserves

Oswego: from the Onondaga deyoshweege
“splitting waters”, “pouring out place” – where the
Oswego River meets Lake Ontario .
