The Dark, Dark Room

The Halloween Party was in full swing
Witches, wizards and an alien thing
with tentacles and one huge eye
Flourishing a laser gun shouting "Die".

Alison and her friends Ada and Jo
Were all dressed as feline kittens "meow"
Carl and Simon had laced the fruit punch bowl
As the evening drew on it took it's tole.

Drunkenly a bet was stupidly placed
Who of them would last and not be outpaced
A nightly vigil at Haunted Creek
Where rode a phantom horseman, there to seek.

Everyone there all knew the awful tale
Making in unison a quick inhale
It was long ago in 1702
A mounted stallion there cast a shoe

The rider's name was Squire Abraham Knight
Was set upon and put up a good fight
He was then butchered for a gold doubloon
Was then thrown in the creek and found at noon

Unexplained sightings, that then disappear
have been recorded, it is very unclear
Warnings come from parents to their own child
No-one goes there, it is left to grow wild

With youthful bravado they all met there
Torches flashed around, as the trees stood bare
Alison and her friends huddled together
Shivering in the inclement weather

Bart and his brother camped down for the night
on a hillock, keeping the creek in sight
Joining them was the terror gang of four
Troublemakers, who all acted hardcore.

Two hours later it started to snow
Huge flakes falling and wind began to blow
"I've had enough of this" said Alison
"I'm all for going home. I'm all done!"

Eagerly agreeing, walked back in step
Suddenly Jo tripped up and in pain wept
"Can't go further, my ankle is wrecked"
Leaning on shoulders, onwards they all trekked.

"No, I can't, please, you must stop", poor Jo wailed
"It's agony! she gasped and then inhaled.
"Come on Jo, we can stop at Adam's place".
"We will make it there at a slower pace.

Adam's place was an old abandoned farm
"No, not there!" said Ada-May in alarm
"Afraid of ghosts and ghouls?" mocked Alison
"More like rats and spiders and not much fun!".

Giggling they arrived at old Adam's place
The moonlight showing fear on each girl's face
"We have to go in there, we have no choice"
Jo jumped. "Was that whinnying of a horse?"

On that retort they threw open the door
Stepping inside, they all dropped through the floor
Not one of them survived their dreadful doom
Trapped, without rescue, in the dark, dark room.............

On the Catwalk

In numerous locales countrywide, they hold sway
Pirouetting at intervals like ballerinas from Bolshoi
Beauteous, feline and very feminine
Slender to the point of emaciation, not quite
Cultivating the undernourished look on a frugal diet
Decidedly austere for a longer tenure in the limelight
Basking in the fleeting warmth of an adulatory audience
A gathering of the doting kindred and the upwardly mobile
Some dirty old men on the sly, dirty young men too
Glued to their seats craning for a better view
By and large captive by choice, a handful perforce
Sitting through to pen their weekly column
Giving those they fancy their due in the sun
Witnesses to a parade of demure eyed lasses
And a few with flashy looks walking tall on stilettos
Essentially female and contoured though not prominently so
At least not to a marked degree, yet with excellent muscle tone

Opulence, no longer deemed a career necessity
Once considered right stuff, now rejected as wrong size
An hour-glass shape belonging to an age bygone
But hardly so, from the viewers’ mind, in retrospect
Enchanting and alluring yet not overtly titillating
Each in a state of dress and undress
Willing tools of designers flaunting their creations
Sporting dresses and hats and shoes, and lingerie too
In black or white and loud or subdued hues
Displaying formal wear, casual wear, swimsuits and sleep suits
Some scanty and figure hugging, others flowing and loose
A bony look required for some, others fulsome
A voyeur’s paradise, to be sure
Indulging a fetish without stooping too low
Chilly weather was never reason enough to cancel a show
Heat of arc-lamps taking care of goose pimples
Or brandy taken neat infusing the needed heat

Harbingers of tomorrow’s fashion and pall-bearers of today’s
The strobe lit platform of the pageant
Serving to launch new faces or is it legs?
The leggy look personified by Twiggy of yore
Carried through in the interim and sustained by the new genre
Captivating without doubt, and thorough professionals
Displaying unruffled demeanour and tutored bearing of thoroughbreds
Exuding confidence with every graceful step they take
Cool as ice despite the harsh glare of stage lights
And callous catcalls from boorish males
Performing in a backdrop of future fashion trends
Money and fame finding some, eluding others
Be it centre stage or in the shadows
It is bread on the catwalk for all

Feline Felicitous On a Christmas Tree

Once upon a time, in a land far away,
There was a prince with a Kitty Cat
(Or so the stories portray)
Who would often say, "Meow,"
Which is how kitty cats say,
"There's a forest growing in the living room!"

Now princes in magical kingdoms know
How to speak many languages
Frazil, German, Arabic, and Cat, so
It should be no surprise that our hero knew
That to a cat, a tree in the house is a forest, although...
It'd been forever since seeing a tree such as this!

"Meow!"-- "I know!" our hero exclaims,
"It's a Christmas tree! And soon presents will be
Arranged around it's base with our names!"
"Meow?" The plaintive query our kitty asks,
"How will you eat those awful fruits? It's a shame..
They're shiny and pretty, but they break easily!"

Kitty Cat went on, batting as he spoke,
"With so many trees to grow inside, this one has been infected
With lights that shine many-coloured without smoke,"
Though others in the room only heard "Meow meow," as expected.
"The candy canes-- they're peppermint!-- but the rest do not poke,"
Said the prince, "They are memories of Christmases past."

"MEOW!" said Kitty Cat, but the prince heard... this:
"Look what I can do! I can climb and hide!"
And clawing his way up the tree, Kitty Cat found bliss!
"Here it's warm, inside smells nice! I think I like
This forest inside!" Meowing on, no thought remiss,
Kitty Cat found his way to purr, knocking down baubles all along.

"Get down here," the prince did demand
"You're breaking the ornaments!" --"Meow?"
"Yes now! We worked very hard to decorate, make it stand
Straight. To light its branches with hope and love!"
And Kitty Cat obeyed the prince's command,
He came down, in wonderment, he looked as prince's boyish face.

In apology, Kitty Cat did purr,
Rubbing on his boy's leg and showing love
The way only cats know how, by gifting him fur.
And the prince smiled, for love and hope
Are all Kitty Cat knew. He lived here, near the conifer,
But only in the now, and never aware of what was or would be.

Batting softly, exploring this tree inside
Kitty Cat was lost in wonder, with the prince's presence.
"Look," said the prince, "Outside there's SNOW to ride!"
"Come on, Kitty Cat!" And grabbing his sled, outside he fled,
And Kitty Cat's meow behind the prince cried,
"But that's the sky-sand that turns to WET!"

Dear Ancient Sister
I hear your distant calls finding me on a gentle breeze
You have lived in my dreams for many seasons

My voice
Your voice
My soul
Your soul
And our Coming of Age

I have always known you...
I have heard your
Quiet whispers echoing in
The night coming close to me

I call to you ...
Let me be a part of your breath
I have always known your wounds and sorrow
I see the light and magic in your eyes...
The pain you carry so eloquently

I see your reflection in the clouds above
Carrying your soul wound on your sleeve
I see the deep crevasses and lines
In your grandmother’s hands
I hear the secrets beneath the earth of
Your grandfather’s footsteps

I see your reflection in the twilight
Of the evening... against pink watermelon hills
Your voice beckoning me onward closer to you

I see you in the moon and stars
Your buckskin dress adorned with
Ceremonial beads
Abalone shell against your forehead
The dirt beneath your moccasins
Grateful for the kiss of your dancing feet

I hear the echo in the distance of songs
The Elders sang...
During their passage here

You are born into a woman
Before my eyes and heart
Before your tribe
Before nature
A wise new feline
A mystical power with endless allure
A force that lifts and unites us all
As one
Your rays blessing us and leaving
A welcome imprint on our hearts

My Ancient sister
I drink in your wisdom and grace
I fly on your wings
You have shown me your world

Watching you dance
Becoming you for moments in time
Your silhouette etched by
The wild flames behind you
A glow radiating into
The night sky

The stories of your Ancestors
Filling the air with
Words and lessons and song
Notes sung into clenched fists
With bloodstained hands
The children and animals
Sensing all that was
And all that will ever be...

The call of a distant bird
The thumping of your cane on
The hungry earth
Keeping time with
The movements of your body

You will look back on this
Day as you walk with the
Same cane down the path of
Old Age...
Your wisdom
Cupping your heart gently

Ancient Sister of mine
I am in gratitude for
Your strength and courage
The kiss of your words and
The teardrops of your loss

As Moon Beams Danced Across the Night Sky

when on a lark, this primate shut his eyes
until sight formed slits doubling up as a wink
this earthling stared hard and scrunched brow
   unintentionally mimicking,

   the familiar Auguste Rodin statue
likened to a pose when one doth think
perhaps said captive pose pondering
(similar to me) about life on other planets

while I stared at lunar surface
akin to a disc or dime sized skating rink
awash with luminescence
   and imaging himself whisked away

   by an alien, synonymous
to the peculiar millions miles distant pastische
   manifested entity than didst slink
a non hue man feline looking cat in the hat

comical creatures decked out entirely in pink
soft halos conjured up saintly mink
or...a far fetched thought suddenly
came to form in my mind,

that this har creature a found missing link
whose nocturnal glowing facade exploding charade
   possibly a message
   or motion nothing more

than routine smoothing out an anatomical kink
on front and back oh head resembling
   a Doctor Zeus characterization,
   viz a harmless rat fink

hm...maybe a vestigial progenitor
of former birth by Gaia now extinct
though from afar, the b52 shaped being
aye espied as fur ball affixed

with a long elephant like snout to drink
and appeared to lack occipital orbs,
yet evinced possible mode to see via a chink
impossible to restrain me noggin
   appearing to nod and blink,
--------------------------------
hence entranced my attention fixed
   from faint (perhaps a feint)
flickr ring meant as playful faux
role playing lunatic humorous acting wry

impossible to decode explicit antics
   (of spacial cosmic guest),
no matter eyes nearly shut tight visual
   wondering if non verbal communication

   of mine correctly interpreted
   meant to kibitz and vie
despite impossibility to validate,
a continuous effort yours truly did try

fixing thy gaze, nee straining
with alm aye might to esse spy
if cheap trick concocted entire visage,
which might not constitute life form

   (admitting this chap to prevaricate,
   and be full of baloney),
   himself prone to confabulate
(dropped one to many times on the head)
   when this rocky lunar image,
   a moon scape comprising nothing

Nine Lives Removed From Royal Dignity

Nine lives removed from royal dignity

Five days after
getting acquainted with darling cats
pampered like queens courtesy
thee eldest daughter
and her partner acquired as kittens
reminiscence occurred regarding
one particular four footed feline
my late mother doted over.

Lion eyes hide predatory wage
sharp retractable sharp claw
never did the late Sage
exhibit talon nor ferocious jaw
even when getting his nails clipped,
said gentle cat infrequently
sunk daggers into soft human skin,
but upon completion
of aforementioned onerous task,
he voicelessly, soundlessly, passively,
manly, joyfully did withdraw.

Aye attest tubby reincarnated
(as well mine eldest daughter's beau)
from one male Russian Blue
species Felis silvestris catus
named Morris if that gives
a handy dandy clue,
and during my fuzzy past
hence, asthma “Cats Cradle”
segued and Atlas
shrugged off kitten hood
fur hum lee established
type cats as (tin pan) alley cat,
a rather litter boxed gritty debut

t'wood become (later in life) tabby
quick as greased lightning
snatching in the air,
when tender vittles flew,
technically got fired (acquiring
appropriate nicknames)
as fame (like a bushy cat tail) grew
viz perfect back up crooner
for “Cat Stevens”,
or lead singer for
the "Stray Cats" oddly

coupled, featured, and
incorporated with the guru
Horton Hears A Hoo,
yes him Elephant resembling
a humongous mandrake

whose body heat could
easily melt an igloo,
whereby Inuits accepted charity from
Korean philanthropists named Joo

these lumbering creatures possessed
an exemplary photographic memory
(rivaling that of the amazing
deceased idiot savant
Kim Peek), he knew
practically every detail
incorporating page number, punctuation
plus citing word for word
never truncating, omitting,
nor jumbling... any lines,
and could track missing link,

when felines shared common ancestor
but,...such petty files
would most likely boar
and go way off course, and hence
will shy away being extempore
favoring a deliberate fore
ray padding around basically ignore
ring any rhyme or reason
suddenly ending this persiflage,
and thence to thee bon jour,
cuz yours truly off
in a huff to bang a lore.

Unforgettable-Based On Silent One's Poem

One day I decided to go and sit in the park.
I sought fresh inspiration and a new muse!
My decision was the perfect panacea done on a lark.
In no way would my spirit this time me refuse!

I sought fresh inspiration and a new muse.
Out of nowhere a cynosure materialized!
In no way would my spirit this time me refuse.
My heart pounded, I held my breath, I was mesmerized!

Out of nowhere a cynosure materialized!
An angelic ingenue was walking in my view!
My heart pounded, I held my breath, I was mesmerized!
This Woman's presence stopped all of time! This is true!

An angelic ingenue was walking in my view!
Both subtle and profound glamour did she possess.
This Woman's presence stopped all of time! This is true!
Dumbfounded and speechless was I! This I do profess!

Both subtle and profound glamour did she possess.
She had a feline lissome movement in her stride!
Dumbfounded and speechless was I! This I do profess!
Bewilderment and inspiration within did collide!

She had a feline lissome movement in her stride.
A demure aura emanated as she smiled!
Bewilderment and inspiration within did collide.
My composure I tamed for this vision drove me wild!

A demure aura emanated as she smiled.
The most mellifluous "Hello!" exited her lovely mouth!
My composure I tamed for this vision drove me wild!
I floated north and simultaneously, I crashed south!

The most mellifluous "Hello!" exited her lovely mouth.
I was frozen in this most ineffable of human states!
I floated north and simultaneously, I crashed south!
Her chatoyant orbs for eyes launched me right into space!

I was frozen in this most ineffable of human states.
What would it take to keep this moment sempiternal?
Her chatoyant orbs for eyes launched me right into space.
I will never be the same outwardly nor internal!

What would it take to keep this moment sempiternal?
My decision was the perfect panacea done on a lark!
I will never be the same outwardly nor internal.
One day I decided to go and sit in the park!

Adventures With James My Grandson

Adventures With James My Grandson

by Joan Donnelly 1995

He doesn't walk but runs to his subject on interest,
and upon arrival, leaps into the air.
With bended knees and flattened feet he lands like an athlete,
and his welcoming, "Hi," cuddles my heart as I wipe away a tear
Then he wraps a wee hand around my finger leading me into his realm of
Adventure and joy.... with enthusiastic anticipation,
though he hasn't turned two yet, my youngest son's eldest boy.
He guides me to a rest area and seats me by patting his hand on an outdoor substitute for a chair.
At his, "Sit, Sit,"I oblige him as he runs through rain puddles...then..
gifts me with a bouquet of dandelions and a honey-filled , "Here."
Once I presented him with a learning toy, his repsonse delighted my soul,
"Awh, Awh,"he uttered appreciatively while tilting his head ia sideways to and fro.
One day he noticed a kitten curled up 'neath a sheltering tree
Swiftly he raced toward her with an over-the-shoulder, "Come," to me.
I couldn't help but chuckle when he repeated, "Come," once more.
He never caught the enlightened feline but brightened my day for sure.
Then he ran down the street where he sighted a wooden plank on the ground.
"Bat, Bat,"rang his happy chant at the treasure he'd found.
With effort he maneuvered the narrow plank over his shoulder gleefully
"Ball, Ball,"he urged and I followed his searching eyes co-operatively.
To my amazement, as if waiting to be found ,lay a beach ball on a grassy mound...
Though I've not known baseball to be played with such.
It was of balloon size and as I looked into James' sparkling eyes..
I wondered if he'd become the baseball player his Dad hoped for so much.
I could see James straining to keep the awkward bat raised so with a..
"Ready, Set,"I pitched ball and prayer as James let out a sigh.
The bat he forward inched as he licked his upper lip and by gosh got a hit,
Then said, "Cool,"as we watched the ball fly.
"Get it, Nanny,"James gave me the order and I retrieved the ball intending to extend our fun........when.....Was it my imagination or did I hear....a crowd in a filled stadium cheer at the announcer's , "Well I'll Be, Folks! Young MacMaster makes another home run !"
