The Hip Jazz Cat/Tony Adamo
Step up, Man, get up, let me hip you to this/ a jazz cat who weaves words and sings/ People, It’s Giacomo Gates/
He’s the master of vocalese a hipster’s delight/ A storyteller with echoes of Buckley and Mark Murphey’s wise vocal flair/
his voice dances on stages as if floating on air/ Eddie Jefferson’s charm and Jon Hendricks’ grace/ when he opens up to sing/this jazz cat is full of swing/
captivating the crowd he swings a groove spell/ entertaining the masses in jazz clubs that know him well/
He’s amusing and musical/ a hipster so rare/Bebop is in his veins, Man, Giacomo Gates is out of the world and the next one too/ “Where did this cat come from?” Savant Records only knows/
with Bird’s solos beneath him and Giacomo’s melodic variation on words/ turning notes into scatting stories/ Gates be cookin’ the most/ so get hip to it and raise your hands high/ the Gospel of jazz will never die/ dig his jazz scene and let his lyrical journey make you high/ In a world full of noise/ Giacomo Gates is the voice you need, the hipster jazz cat who is somethin’ else, you’ll see, you’ll believe!
WHAT MEN WANT
I went for a walk, tripped and bumped my head,
I got up, buttoned my coat, it was freezing cold,
Began snowing outside I was told
Walking in the mall, in my head,
Heard, two men chatting, looking my way
She can put her slippers any night or day
Under my bed!
This I distinctly heard, how absurd!
Couldn’t wait to tell my friends at work
Wore a smirk
On my face as I gathered Emily, Sue and Jane,
“ I can read the minds of men”
Jane held up her hands,
Yes, I said all your fingers intact, all ten,
Do you think I’ve gone mad,
Yes said Sue, just a tad!
Their boss passed and they greeted him,
Guess what I said, I am getting a raise
Today, they laughed, but my boss
Called me in and gave me a raise,
I came out of his office with thumbs up, yup,
It was confirmed by Mr Blaze!
The girls were astounded as I revealed
The thoughts of Peter, Sam and Eddie
The one I couldn’t repeat belonged to Freddie!
Sam had a crush on Jane and Eddie
Though Emily was great
And Sue, well I told her that Peter was about,
To propose which he did, but I had a nagging doubt,
That my gift was a temporary measure,
So used it as much as I could, what a treasure!
The night before, read my husband’s mind
That he wanted me to cook Kleftico
So before going home I went to find
What my husband had in mind.
Arrived home put my dainty apron on,
And began to cook, chilled the wine
And we were ready to dine,
Hubby arrived – Mmmm something smells nice,
Lifted the lid of the pot in the oven
And gave me a kiss and then my overworked
Mind heard him say,
Kleftico, red wind and if she wore
Her sexy black nightie, what a perfect night
So I took it out ready to wear
But after dinner tripped on a stair,
Fell down and bumped my head
Hard, there I lay eagle spread
On the floor, hubby picked me up
And saw my nightie on the bed,
How could you read my mind, he said,
But the bump on my head,
Reversed my gift, really did I,
You certainly did, perhaps it’s
The bump on your head, he said!
Hey I just love the countryside
it's so peaceful and full of calm
even when I don't meet a single soul
but come across a working farm
One time with the sun so bright
sweat was so prominent on my face
but the warmth was worth it all
a great start to the day in my place
Usually, I like being just on my own
but this day I met Edith on route
we got chatting about country life
finding both loved to be on foot
So Eddie(me) and Edith loved being together
especially walking seeing lovely scenes
romantic thoughts enter their hearts
a future together makes them keen
So both continue to love a stroll
hand in hand along step by step
being thankful for where they met
finding love within their lover's net!
A strange dream....
I look out of my window at marshmallow clouds.
Drifting across the sun, blotting out daylight stars.
The moon shines bright in the dull sunlight.
As a piano black sea. Drenches the ground.
One cloud resembles a Unicorn. My favourite pony.
I race outside. Alone and lonely.
I lie on the ground and the rain meets my skin.
And I laugh as it tickles me as the thunder begins.
The tinkling of the ivories the sound of cymbals.
As the lightning roars and the ground it trembles.
Suddenly I awaken from my deep sleep.
and look at my glass unicorn watching over me!
It was all just a dream! I fall back to sleep.
Back into a world which makes me weep.
Watching butterflies being chased by cats.
Flying out over a gold pond and high into a red sky.
Dreams are strange as you see never things.
Dogs and frogs flying with wings.
Or fish with rods pulling out men.
Then taking out the hook and banging their heads.
Why is the inspector checking their licences a hen?
And still I toss and turn in my bed.
And the hen laughs at me and pelts me with an egg.
I run away into a blue meadow. With yellow lizards.
And see a beautiful girl who changes into Eddie Izzard.
I wake with a start and a fast beating heart.
And realise life is hard. And has no reward.
So enjoy your strange dreams. And don’t have nightmares.
Unless it is a horse with a horn. A beautiful white unicorn..
SUNFLOWERS AND THE BUDDHA JAZZ LIGHT
Inner peace, mindfulness, compassion, word sculpturing, and the painting of visual jazz word speak
Ingredients to make your soul Buddha talk/
Herbie Hancock, Charles Lloyd, the Beat poets/
notably Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Gary Snyder, the Dharma Bums, Eastern philosophy/
The Beats were heavily influenced by Zen Buddhism, focusing on direct experience, meditation,
and the transcendence of structured thought/
Some jazz musicians of the 1950's fused the spontaneous energy of bebop jazz with the philosophical tenets of Buddhism/
The spontaneity of Charlie "Bird" Parker's playing merged with Buddhist notions of the "void" or "shunyata," where the improviser
pierces through the silence/
Buddha's breath in petals bright, whispers of mindful light, interconnected, yet free from grasp. a dance of seeds in a cosmic clasp/
Sowing happiness, in the earth's embrace, manifestation's gentle trace, yet in the void, where silence lies, non-existence softly flies/
Modern art, a visual jazz, words sculpted like spiritual pizzazz, inner peace to Eddie Gale,
Compassion spun, a tapestry of the soul begun/
Herbie's keys, a sacred tune, Charlie's sax, a fleeting moon, the Beat poet's rhythmic breath, Zen's deep silence beneath the depth/
Spontaneous, raw, unbound, in the void's embrace, profound, where improvisational jazz is born anew/
Sunflowers and the Jazz Buddha, in harmony's dance, a sacred union of chance and meditative trance/
In every seed, a universe, in every breath, the universe's verse
To bring a bit of happiness to my soul
I’ve got to sing along to a little rock n’ roll
Don’t try and tell me it’s all out of date
Elvis is still rocking, Eddie Cochran's' blues were great
When I need to bring rhythm to this body of mine
I listen to the soul of motown it sounds divine
Sweet soul music with a dash of R and B
It brings a smile to my face these classics of history
Just to sweeten up those memories of mine
I’ll play something soft that throws me back in time
Smooching to the music in pure harmony
Takes me to another place romantically
If I want to get funky and really get on down
I put on the Godfather yeah’ James brown
With lots of movements I start to swing
It’s a whole new dance a totally wild thing
Depending on my taste of musical tunes
I'll Play something to ease my musical moods
Because they bring life into my musical soul
I'll stick on that jazz by Nat King Cole

This poem is about my friend Eddie
We went to college together in New York City.
While other students were busy with trigonometric calculations,
Eddie had his own ambitions.
Eddie’s guitar was his prized possession
Plucking away at its strings was his obsession
Getting good grades was something he could manage
His performance was always above average
His father was his only fear
Who wanted to make him an engineer
Most of the time he was pestered with phone calls from his father,
Giving him advice but Eddie didn't even bother
But then he decide to meet hi, one day
So he drove to Philadelphia to meet him that day
He had to tell his father about his ambition
As he had no other option.
Getting home he found his father working away
But still he went up to him and said what he had to say
His father stopped and listened diligently
And after much argument he finally had to agree.
So now, after six years, two months and five days
Eddie has his own band where he plays,
Though Eddie and his father are still at war
About Eddie playing the guitar.
This was the story of my friend Eddie
Who is now a relatively well known celebrity
He finally got to live his dreams
And fulfilled his ambition, it seems!
"Have fun in school."
What a silly thing to say!
It means nothing.
Just remember God wants it
this way.
Your job is to learn!
He wants that. It is God's way.
Life in heaven, has schools, too.
Heaven is a mirror of earth.
Minus a nut or two.
One day school will end,
And you will be glad!
Just be joyful you are
Doing God's will, not man's.
I will miss you the many days
to come.
And thank you, Eddie.
You are the best grandson.
You are the hope and glory of
America's future generations.
And knowing you, your outlook
and goals,
You, and others like you make
the coming generations, true and
compassionate sensations.
With love,
Nana

To want something strongly felt
is to admit how the fire is burning...
until it suddenly explodes inside;
and if it leaves one hanging,
express it without thinking twice:
could it always remain silent?
From one lover to another
my enthusiasm has turned sour,
not showing my charm to smother,
to deceit and have fun;
I fed my ego of mad fool,
taking all and breaking every rule...
while my true intention
wasn't to be faithful to only one!
I hate this refrain sung to me,
" Silly, silly man this is hilarious,
a satire is not written for someone free
who sees himself as invincible as Eddie:
a person far from kind and generous!
From one lover to another,
the circle has gotten smaller,
nobody trusts me, they think I'm Othello;
they avoid me, they don't say a single hello!
Don't threat women the selfish way I did,
don't leave a trail of undesirable regrets;
romance stories aren't written by pretty playboys,
by cheaters who build their castles in sea sand!

There once was a squirrel who wanted to be a bunny,
He dyed Easter eggs pastel and, oh so yummy.
His name was Eddie, quick as DoorDash*
And wore pink fluffy ears quite brash.
He hopped around, called himself Sunny.
But his hops proved a farcical fail,
His acrobatics turned tails pale~
He stored nuts in his cheeks,
And developed a twitchy mystique.
‘cause he drank too much Easter-themed ale!
