Let My Old Age Be Nigh Mellow

Autoplay next video

To soul art thou as sleep be to my strife,
My cheeks when look no more rosy, look dull,
Lips no more red and knees no more supple,
The flesh when falters, wrinkles raging rife,
In feeble frame when flounders fumbling mind,
Its will unable to stand firm behind,
Bite me then if ye may like harsh winter,
But come not O Death like a sleepless sleep.

Be thou golden yellow mellow summer
To a tired soul that lived full, well and deep,
To whom life was like a day's work well done,
Night's rest well-earned, to face afresh new dawn,
  In glimmering sunset's withering glow,
Let my old age O death be nigh mellow.

Premium Member The Outside Dunny

In the fifties
it was the suburban icon
that survived the start
of the renovation phase
and still graced the backyards
of most houses in the neighborhood,
the ubiquitous Australian
outside dunny.

Ours was a corrugated iron
oven that cooked you in the summer
and would freeze even the most proud
member down to a modest size
in winter. Daddy long leg spiders
would watch from the walls and ceiling
and bounce about in their webs
when the chain on the overhead
cistern was pulled
and water gushed out.

One hot summer's day my Dad
was sitting on the loo
with the door open and saw
a snake crawl across the lawn.
Up with his trousers he pursued
the snake until it slid into
the shade house, grabbing it
by the tail as it slipped through
the wire netting fence.

For an hour he called out
hoping someone would hear
and help him deal with the snake.
Back then there were no
snake catchers you could call,
you either killed it or let it go
and worried whether
it would come back.

Finally our neighbor, Jim Ireland,
came running in armed
with an axe and as Dad slowly
pulled it back out,
dealt the reptile a fatal blow.
When I came home from school
that day, there was this four foot
brown hanging on the clothesline
almost cut in half.

It seemed too small to pack
such danger, its jaws sealed shut
in death over those lethal fangs.
I couldn't bring myself to touch it
in fear that it might spring back
and bite me in a final revenge.
That year, my Dad kept
the dunny door open
all summer. He never saw
another snake. I should have been
a better son.

Notes.
Though rather obvious, the term
“dunny” refers to an outside toilet,
a good old Australian colloquialism.

It's rare to find snakes in suburban
backyards these days unless near
open areas and waterways.
As a matter of interest, the snake
referred to in the poem was
an “Eastern Brown” whose venom
is rated as the second most toxic
in the world, the most toxic being
the Inland Taipan another Australian
species.

Paler Than a Phantom

My credit card has
an outstanding balance,
I'm tired of paying
interest and fees;
can somebody
bail me out, please?

My woes are getting
deeper than madness;
I'm spinning
in a frantic dance...
while my nightmares
are getting worse!

I'm paler than a phantom
in a Broadway play,
I am an ordinary guy
in a plaid shirt and faded jeans;
I go unnoticed by everyone
looking so preppy:
and through this chaos
of mundanity aoid grins!

I rubbed Aladdin's lamp
and waited,
I wondered if he had invented
this alluring tale
to make magic his selfish greed;
I'm better than William Tell,
I can shoot an apple
from yards away.
Didn't David
hit Goliath in the skull
with a stone:
I applaud his bravery; he saved
many lives and avoided
a windfall!

My soup is all broth
without a single pea,
bees buzz, they smell
honey in my hot tea;
at least, I have
something to keep me busy.
I catch them with a net,
they'd love to bite me;
it's a great distraction
from headache and worry!

I'm paler than a phantom
in a Broadway play,
I've bought a ticket
to drift away
into that swift crowd
so unfriendly and rude;
yum, I smell hot dogs roasting,
I'm vowed!

I'm paler than a phantom
in a Broadway play,
all I got is my freedom:
my pockets are empty,
home is only blocks away!

Addiction

My body is an infection
To all those I let inside
Some will keep for reflection
While others use for pride

I’m done living this lie
Oh begotten son so loved
I wish to come home to you
In our canopy up above

My skin peels like lemon rinds
As men use me for their temper
Calming storms of subconscious tides
I thaw their frozen shelter

But in temptation I am lost
Pushing down temples of ancient times
I once thought love led my words
But I’m left to face these dogs of pride

Bite me. Chew me. Spit me.
When will this ever end?
Hit me. Hurt me. Trap me.
How has this bitterness returned again?

The peaks of the mountains sing to me
And the valleys so deep forget my name
But in this chamber where my heart beats
Ring the chains of growing shame

How to listen to the gods
An arcane mind too gruesome to bare
Tugging at my string of knots
Of golden silk, buttered hair

I cry to my mother as she kneels before me
And yell to my father as his hands wash my feet
The dirt pools beneath my soles
As tears stain my blood-soaked sheets

Semen swirling in forbidden places
A cyclone of lustful action.
Oh hellhound of the deepest circle
Why has this curse happened?

Bite me. Chew me. Spit me.
When will this ever end?
Hit me. Hurt me. Trap me.
How has this bitterness returned again?

Fables are told to mend the hearts
Of ogres and and of frogs
Twisted tales to knot the knowing
Forget the truth of who you are.

Bite me. Chew me. Spit me.
When will this ever end?
Hit me. Hurt me. Trap me.
How has this bitterness returned again?

We are broken , we are loved.
We are gods, we are doves.

Deliver me before my throne,
Grovel under my own dynasty

Date with destiny

Table for two please,
Mine and Destiny
Cause it's about time we had that date
And maybe after that I'll nail it

Keep off the water
I don't want it to be soaked
But you can keep serving
Lemmi keep it busy chewing on something

Cause I'd not want it to bite me off
While there are many things I'd want to tell them
Like how it's taking its sweet time
With spin-offs while we know where this is going

I'd want it to look away
And maybe it could show me just where I need to focus
Cause my eyes have been so focused on it
At times I trip and forget the now

Table for two please,
Mine and Destiny
I'm about to propose
And make it bound to me for life

Premium Member My Happy Muse Bites Back

Listen up guys I have got some news
This is the latest gossip about my muse
She threw her dummy out of the pram
Sometimes she is such a stroppy madam!

She didn’t mean to cause such great alarm
My ‘Bite Me’ poem didn't mean any harm
I agree it’s not my normal cheerful style
But my muse changes once in a while

I have to go with the flow of my pen
It catches me unawares every now and then
I hope that I have cleared up any doubt
My vitriolic muse has been given a clout

So humourous muse is back, she’s here to stay
My deep dark muse is on an extended holiday!

Premium Member Where Is Your Other Half

Owl Cat gave me the evil eye, and I mean good.
My blood froze as I stopped where I stood.
Where is your other half? I wondered but I dared not ask.
If I queried, I knew Owl Cat would take me to task.

Owl Cat has only appeared six times in my life.
But when he does, I know there will be strife.
Sometimes a bat will fly in and bite me on the mouth.
I heard something swishing from a breeze kind of south.

I slammed the front door, locking Owl Cat outside.
He was soon sitting next to the fire, his face half as wide.
Where is the other half of his body? I wondered but dared not speak.
With a huge groan and a grin, the couch gave a gigantic creak.

They are coming to get you, evil Owl Cat said, his half back to me.
I was terrified – felt small, helpless, trapped and wee.
Why do you come? I wondered. Owl Cat gave out an ugly laugh.
And where in the devil’s name, Owl Cat, is your other half?

Premium Member To Drown Or Sail Away

Thoughts drifting
   through my mind
Memories
   that make me blind
To what I have
   in life today
They pull me in
   and I fade away

Back to a time
   that has long past
I retreat to the child
   who's future seemed cast
By others actions
   unable to control
The events that damaged
   an innocent soul

I cringe at the memories
   in anguished pain
As i cringed from the dreadful
   violence in vain
Once more in helplessness
   I begin to drown
And I feel my soul
   on the road to breakdown

I struggle to swim
   out of this well
Of recollections
   of a living hell
I make myself think
   of the good times instead
Flush pointless flashbacks
   out of my head

All so long ago
   so far in the past
I climb into my boat
   and cling to the mast
The mast is my strength
   the boat is today
From the sea of history
   I'm sailing away

As it made me who I am
   of my past I'm accepting
Having lived compassionately
   good future I'm expecting
I chose not to stay a victim
   but an honest winner
And I forgive all the wrongs
as I too am a sinner

But I made my own way
and I made my own choices
Heard plenty of advice
   from too many voices
So I took the gemstones
   from amongst it all
Made them mine
   and stood up tall

The past may come back
   at times to bite me
I know just to squash it
   like a pesky little flea
Rub salve on the wound
   and walk away
And live in the now
   here for today

Determined to be grateful
   for the times I've burnt
Each bad experience
   is a new lesson learnt
Goodness and wrongness
   all lead me to be
A person who is strong
   empathetic and free

You may hurt my temple
   but not my belief
This simple truth
   is such sweet relief
No need to struggle
   in that sticky marsh
The awful muck
   that makes my heart harsh

Put up the sail
   of this boat of mine
And sail away
   my soul sublime

Tonight the moon is dazzling
Looking from my garden
Gazing towards the lake
My heart did leap for joy
I began dancing in the moonlight

Majestic ripples in the water
Sent shivers down my spine
Stars twinkled in the horizon
Totally sublime
So, happy to be alive

Moonlight ~ eerie, will vampires be out !
I scream " where are you "
Come get my neck ~ bite me

Premium Member Ah, Bite Me

Get out of bed
and just get it in gear.
Don’t give me excuses;
I don’t want to hear.

Now follow my rules,
you’re doing it wrong!
You wrote me a poem
but I asked for a song.

I think you are deaf,
cause you can’t be that dumb.
You say “treat me better”,
so prove you’re not scum!

You’re lucky to have me,
nobody else would
put up with your bull-crap,
I treat you so good.

He kept on and kept on
he thought she would break
but as he would learn
he’d gave more than she’d take.

Next night when he came home,
she’d set herself free.
On the mirror in lipstick
she'd scrawled, “Ah, Bite Me!!”
