was on a trapeze
did swung through all of the trees
while searching for keys
Turn this into a song for
Alisha Keyes to sing.
I almost skipped the Grammys
Thinking nothing would appeal,
But there were some performances
That somehow did reveal
That my mind should still be open
To the possibility
That what I call “thuggy” music
Might sound really good to me.
With Alicia Keyes as host, her smile
Just lighting up the room,
The vibes were so inclusive
Joy had no choice but to bloom.
And the dancers were amazing,
So much energy on stage
That the audience got into it,
No matter what their age.
Though I didn’t relish everything,
I’m glad I had the chance
To experience surprise at what
I’ve always viewed askance.
The Window
The light in the window
Lies further down the road
A refuge , an escape, a release
Keyes of blessing and new beginnings
A space to breathe
To shelter sheep
With the mighty rock of Galilee

School Girl
A thick and heavy wooden door yanked off the wall
Carried into the street by a black man
Peddling wheels and bicyclists ran the streets
People strolled on sidewalks
With hands in their pockets
And music in their ears
A white woman with a large ball of shiny keyes in hand
walked quickly
Butterflies cut out on my pair of blue jeans
Delicate and pretty ones, too,
On my small white ,cotton tote bag
Colorful and young
I walked yonder
To my dwelling place
Into my chambers
Thick sheets and fluffy pillows
Floral window panels with golden accents
A black digital clock on the wall reads 11:11
Strong cologne
In fancy black boxes
A brown wooden frame
With a little school girl in white and navy blue

KEYES TO HEAVEN
Conversational Eyes
With a face weathered
from the sun his
Eyes telling a story
caught my curiosity
The mystery in them
drove me to ask him
I sat beside him as he
Spoke with verbosity
Opening my mouth
To speak, He said
“Got something to
Ask me girly?” Speak!
Rattled I said your
" Keyes cut into my tart"
I am a babbling fool
Sitting here beside you
May I start over? Sure,
He said as he laughed
Your eyes cut deep into my
heart. You have wise eyes!
What do you see in my
Old eyes, He Asked.
You were a lighthouse
For others upon the sea
Yet I see sorrow for what
You have not achieved
Regretting you never
Married is what I see
Your eyes shine with
Softness, he smiled at me
It is never too late to find
A wife at any age, with
Loving eyes he turned saying”
" Today tis you, I was glad to meet”
Eyes are the
Windows of the

YOUR
KEYES
his skin is hot, ocean-air scented
as he burrows his head into my shoulder
he does not want his mother
her wild ways and loud voices
have frightened him enough today
have taken every good moment in the sun
and darkened it
as always
his arms are tight around my neck
and he hides his eyes
I love his scent he is pure
boy
salty and clean
he knows my firm hand on his back
is a safety net
and I step away and in front of my wife
to avoid her
keep her away from this boy
who hurts too much too soon
ahh oooo what a cute boy the old woman says
as I juggle the keyes and the towels to open the
car
and is that your wife
through my sunglasses I look at her standing there
hair wild
looking dopy and defiant at once
glaring at anyone looking her way
"oh god yes" I say, unable to swallow "God Help Me"
The Walmart greeter in my town
Is short and fat with the face of a clown
Her cheeks are rouged a brilliant hue
Her lips are painted a deadly blue
Her hair is sparse and greying
She wears a toothless smile
She pushed a cart into my hands
And shoved me down the aisle
She is in charge of every cart
Helping patrons shop the mart
Answers questions every day
Where's the diapers? Where to pay?
Do you sell rackets for the courts?
Where do I return these under shorts?
Where's the bathroom? I lost my keyes
Can you find my husband, please?
So when you pass a Walmart store
Remember the greeter at the door
Although her guise may seem uncanny
Don't forget she's someone's granny!
