Ask an ocean cliff diver, eager and daring,
How thrilling it is, the ascent and air diving,
The arms stretched wide, like wings fluttering,
Plunging into the depths, like a whale's splash echoing,
But without courage, mere fantasies we will be sharing
Ask a ground squirrel, scurrying through its maze,
With nuts in its grasp, the squirrel sets new aims,
The eagle above, watching its playful ways,
Squirrel is unfazed by perils or ominous claims,
For courage triumphs, dispelling fear's haze.
Courage stands tall, unknown’s fear it defies,
Confidence soaring, reaching goals in a story,
Finishing duties, victory within its eyes,
Building self-esteem, forging a path to glory,
Let darkness not prevail, let courage arise.

Gray ground squirrel and toughie buffie elf both wanted the nut.
It’s is mine! Yelled the elf. Squirrel knocked him with his butt.
I say it’s mine! The elf insisted, persisting hoping squirrel would leave.
Instead that motorcycle squirrel showed him his tough guy tattoo sleeve.
I guess we could share it the elf suggested, reluctantly.
The squirrel knocked him out of that persnickety old pine tree.
Seriously! He yelled from his sprawled place on the ground.
How did such a mean squirrel ever get the best squirrel crown?

small brown squirrel runs
across the streets dodging cars
jumps over the curb
unto the tree tops
wiggling tails up and around
up and down climbing

This could not be 'cat and mouse'.
But it was indeed, cat and squirrel.
Cat on ground; squirrel up the tree.
Cat said, "If you come down, I will
eat your heart out". Squirrel said,
"Mama taught me better than that".

Tiny chipmunks play; chasing all day
One another through my gutters.
Fur balls of joy, Chip and Dale;
Melting my heart and soul;
Is a chipmunk’s goal.
They feel my joy;
Elation;
When they
Play.

A cold breathe leaves my mouth frozen solid
I can feel it as laminated mid grey silver fog
So cold that my lips shutters like a brown ground squirrel running
Blinded, I can't see Blizzard storms
Frozen leaves on trees none moving
Timber of trees few fallen leaves
I call out to the branches
They reach out to me
Snow falls falling down on my head
My blue lips yellowed faced my statue is that I'm cold...
Frozen

OLD TREE
Tell of this marvelous acre
The which surrounded by neighborhood
Where stands the giant old tree
No living soul can remember a time of sprouting
The time long before neighborhood
For all anyone knows the old tree has always
been there
Center of the mystic plot
And the ground cover renews year by year
In a green emerald density
Here reside the burrowers, climbers, flyers, Chance residents of nature’s renewal
Year after year those hungry come and go
Come and go
Now witness this confrontation –
One fine black cat
Eyes ablaze, quietly watching
And a ground squirrel
Peering down from half way up the old tree
Trunk
Chattering about who knows what,
But cock sure the old tree is quite eternal,
will always aid escape
Three black crows at tree top taunt, screech
down
The drama plays out daily,
Has done so for countless ages
Then, in some celestial silence
Should old sky reaching giant speak
It would say,
“I am here”

SUDDENLY
Feeding time
The picnic table is black with birds
the main cluster but then as many
disseminate inhabit branches wires
fences
flitting down when hunger dares
Suddenly this winter day – remembering the movie
“Suddenly Last Summer” –
I am uncomfortably terribly aware
The disjointed mass chorus of voices – in perpetual
forte – are not quaint not convivial
not joyous
The clamor is born of desperation – each member
I-am-the-one –
Each with a single song constant eyes
ruffled feathers and rapid pulse
The ground squirrel ceases to be cute in scurrying
in his sneaking in his thievery
And I bite down on my pen
Looking thoughtfully off
Suddenly ill almost
