AFTER CUMMINGS POEMS
These are poems I wrote after the poems of e. e. cummings...
teacher
by michael r. burch, age 16-17
teacher, take a look at my life,
for it has just begun
and u think that i am “misinformed”
merely because i'm young;
but the truth is often hidden
(what lies lurk behind ur eyes?)
and maybe Puff can tell u
where the Dragon flies.
teacher, take a look at my life:
urs is a dull-edged knife
(the white-hot blade long blunted).
now ur as cold as ice.
still, when u come to class,
act like u know it all,
for if u show insecurity,
surely wee will folderol.
I wrote "teacher" in either 10th or 11th grade after hearing the song "Old Man" by Neil Young. "Wee" is a pun, not a typo.
don’t forget
by michael r. burch
for Beth
don’t forget to remember
that Space is curved
(like your Heart)
and that even Light is bent
by your Gravity.
The opening lines of my poem were inspired by a famous love poem by e. e. cummings.

A nation that has a wealth of knowledge
Mainly rejected because the greed of few
Eduction is based on elitism not geniuses
Reaching full potential benefits everyone
Ideas and their creations are investments
Choose a new future learn from your past
A nation united will inspire that new future

Her restraint ne'er beholden to a closed entity,
but to turn the key that unlocks the shackles
that hinder one’s poetic pen, utmost words
to cascade into the annals of history,
Bard to reveal decadency of a mind from
ravelled stifled panoramic views.
A script of nonconformity that dwells deep within
one’s consciousness, battles with the hostilities of
an academics re-eduction of the tyrant’s expressive
enzyme, that breaks down the very essence of freedom.
A need to call upon the phoenix of ancient times, and
from the flame of one’s liberality penetrate the
barriers of one man’s mindset, only when birthed
within and lived it, can the truth of understanding
be apparent to those that reside outside the bubble
of totalitarianism's ambiguity.

Dressed fools
Education with out common sense
Is equal to calamity
Education with out
Love is equal to wars
Education with out
Spiritual knowledge
Is equal to ignorance
Eduction with out morals values
is equal to too many
dressed fools

(L)eatherneck Jugg Butt was detailed to clean the barracks latrine,
(A) humiliatin' prospect for a dedicated United States Marine!
(T)he young jarhead wanted so much to gain Captain Grumpy's affection.
(R)eduction in rank he could face if he failed the captain's urinal inspection!
(I)f he flunked, he could end up in the mess hall scrubbin' pots and pans!
(N)o way he wanted to be assigned to trash detail dumpin' garbage cans!
(E)ndearment for sergeants, officers and the Corps he hath a paucity of!

If there comes a day
when the preacher's politicians
control the state
Phinehas will rise from his grave
round up the gays
and send them down
to Guantanamo Bay
to entertain the Muslims.
The Kingdom's minions
will hammer in the heads
of our tender young
the creation in seven drub
social welfare is evil
and God's top ten rules.
Which I must say
rules are meant to be broken.
And if that day comes
when our children must pray
and Jesus is the only way
I and my liberal
secular humanist
co-conspirators
will be taken out back
beaten naked and shot
for refusing to accept
that Christ died for us.
Or worse yet
sent to a re-eduction camp
to sing Cumbaya.
Unless, of course
we move to Canada.
