[first stanza for Planet contest]
Martians, they don’t live here
Even astronauts keep clear
Residing though in darkest places
Charred: the eyebrows on their faces
Up from underground they creep
Resembling small asbestos sheep
Yikes they bleat at red hot feet
*
Meat and veg are not prolific
Eat it if it’s calorific
Roast Mercurian rat... horrific
Chance a glance and risk the heat
Usually, not much to eat
Rare, the morsel overlooked
Yet what there is... is over cooked
***
Many miles through space to Venus
Earth is far more space between us
Risk those Martians haven’t seen us
Cruise by Jupiter and Saturn
Uranus ain't what you’re sat on
Rush past Neptune on to Pluto
Yup, a planet... shows what you know

War
In a kingdom full of combatants I heard a naval, military struggling
Combat
I am non violent And I am recovering
Death shall bring troops
'War!' said I, 'thing of jihad.'
Do they believe in God
Quite odd
And those eyes have all the warmongering
Wars
Great war - great war - great war!
Only this and a nuclear winter
Snowing atomic gluserian
That antiwar, antiwar campaign
War
I remember I was feuding
And the clans never advocating
I crave the antagonistic, calorific awareness
awareness calorific, the antagonistic I crave
War
Eagerly I looked for the disaster
War
It was castor, alabaster, vaster!
Not
I crave the warlike, war-torn warship
My conflict, I could not awaken hatred bliss
Do not enlist
Still is planing, still is planing
In there stepped a medievalist 'red army faction'
God makes love, man makes
War

Can happinness be wrapped in foil
as it a calorific value.
A specific size.
Does it weigh heavy on you.
Does it make your heartache
is it what others perceive
or is it within you .
Is it a number on a scale
the label in a shirt
a tear on your cheek
a reflection in a mirror
a state of mind
be who you are
not what others want you to be
be you.

Not a good year for the roses
Cut price Valentine roses
languish in black buckets
heads drooping like a rejected lover
Calorific candy confectionery in boxes
covered with cardboard love hearts...
still waiting to pass ruby red lips
‘Be my Valentine cards’
now half price -
buy yours ready for next year!

Love
I see it piled sky high on the supermarket shelves
Perfect pink packaging containing calorific chocolates and cute cuddly toys,
seductive scents or sexy silk underwear
Slushy Valentine’s cards with ridiculous romantic rhymes
Stick on a cardboard heart and it's not just the vendor who is smiling!
A sea of red roses that stretches as far as the eye can see
Notice how the prices inflate higher than a helium 'I Love You' balloon
Yet on 15th February everything will be half price
Is this the price of true love or am I just a cynic?

Chocolates at Christmas,
carefully I choose a
caramel coated in
calorific candy.
Could I eat another …
choice of coconut or
creamy coffee truffle.

Chocolate would be calorific free
Politician promises would be kept, regardless of the cost or what they meant
Doctors get triple wages and nurses twice as much
Wars are settled playing tidily winks
and religion that is banned for good
The work week starts on Monday and finishes that night
and all woman come with instruction books ! just to help me out.
Snow only comes on Xmas day
and puppy's never grow up
and Britain moved next to the Bahamas in the Caribbean sea

Lets all dine at Major toms
A space food banquet
Provided by ground control
Although this is not sci-fi delight
This is cuisine of the 21st century type
Foil sachets and microwave meals
Calorific content and salty treats
Has the diet of man progressed to this?
When will we learn that speed and ease don’t help?
Its time and effort that yields wealth
Obesity and heart attacks are for desert
No matter how much physical energy you exert
Change your mind set before you choke
The end is nigh for the lazy folk

The thing about veneer is this:
It blinds to the truth,
Hides the real heart from sight
Whilst shining like topaz and gold.
The coating on a rotten tooth,
The glister on decaying wood,
The glaze on calorific cakes,
The healthy gleam in contact lens eyes.
The rosy sheen on those about to die of fever,
The cosmetic touch on week-old corpses,
The gloss of laughing lips superimposed on twisted rage,
The glow of fires on streams and rivers.
The thing about veneer is this:
It makes the real seem unreal,
Or the unreal seem real - whatever;
The sick seem well,
The evil seem good,
The mad seem sane
The abnormal seem, well, normal.
And the intrigue lies within
The way it is brushed on like a second skin,
So to reflect our pretend personas
To those who look upon us.
Whilst they do the same
To us who look upon them.
We all hide the madwoman in the attic,
But the question is:
Who has the maddest woman to hide?
