awkward always alone Allie
bragged boastfully to baby Bertie Bill
clearly clarifying club-footed cloven Callie
deliberately deciphering dairy dung in Dickie Dill
easing eager Edgar’s electrifying entry
forever forsaking flim-flam’s frequent flam
greasing gray grannie’s gentle gentry
hardily helping herself to Harry’s hottish ham

Today Stacey
who had seemed absent minded lately
showed up at school
acting all cool
and we soon saw a hickey
which everyone referred to as Mickey
to conceal it from the teachers
who would turn into preachers
if they knew that she silently bragged
about being tagged.
Everybody wanted her to give up the name
of the boy who had brought her fame
but she wanted her crush
to remain hush hush
so she just gave us a smile.
But after a while
we saw Kyle
walking around with something familiar
and that is when we realized
that he had also been hypnotized
with the kiss
of bliss.

In the beginning,
there was no evidence he existed
except my breath still stutters
at the phrase weight check.
Dr. Wilson wore red socks,
offered sample packs in a manila envelope,
told me I was pretty and shrinking
in exactly the right way.
Said we’d do a quick exam—
just routine.
Hands under the gown,
thumbs on the outer edges like he was
measuring range or resistance.
He never said breast.
He never said anything.
Just held each one
like it was a question
and waited for me
not to answer.
I didn’t flinch.
I didn’t leave.
I said thank you.
Took the pills and the compliment
in the same swallow.
At home I bragged
that my jeans fit like an apology.
There’s no evidence he existed
besides my body asking
how many parts it must offer
to earn approval.
Except every man in red socks
makes me want to run—
throw up about something
I’ll pathologize about later,
by myself.
Even though it began
with his own being
irresponsible with power.
There's a day coming
when it won't be like this.

And the children cried out to their Maker
Bless us Lord, we receive Your loving peace
They all clamered 'round about Him
Singing and dancing, the Lord was pleased
They came upon a leper
His body wreaked, his eyes were dim
He dare not raise his eyes to Jesus
He was crippled but he really loved Him
Finally they left, the sun was low
There was chatter, good things had happened
They bragged how Jesus loved them so

She was purposefully brazen, garish and flashy
Daughter of Lee, who owned a haberdashery
Her outfits were razzle dazzle, glaringly loud
That’s my daughter, her daddy bragged to the crowd
People lined up to gawk to see what she would wear
Some of them made fun of her ensemble, but she did not care
Others yelled mean things to her – vulgar and tawdry
She loved being known as outrageous, glitzy and gaudy

He was the love of my life, Pat said
Walter’s relatives forgot to tell her he was dead.
We were almost married five times, bragged she.
Walter was mean to her, a Simon Legree.
We almost this, we almost that, we bought a dog, a bird, a cat.
I paid the money, but it was worth it, said the delusional Pat.
No one had told her that Walter was dead.
This should have put a clue in her crazy head.

there was a young Irish lad named Jack
who bragged about his size in the sack
he met Sarah one day
for a roll in the hay
she said you’re a wee man and that’s a fact

I am practically a saint the girl bragged one day
Rest of us were speechless; did not know what to say
She smokes, she drinks, and she is as wild as any child
If we have to give her the truth, let’s make it placid and mild

I am a merry me frisky fey a tiny man bragged to me
Please join me at my explosive enjoyable revelry
A jollity in his overzealous ambiance was brighter than I had ever seen
Magical merriment and meshugga craziness was about to convene
Are you a leprechaun? I asked the adorable trickster, right away
Name’s McCindlesticks and I’m Celtic Irish, all the ever-loving day
That was good enough for me, being the daughter of a McCormick.
I am a bit Irish myself, and not easy to fool, cajole or trick.

During the famous Des Moines rumble
Sixteen boys landed in a giant jumble
No one bragged for they were horribly humble
Soccer ball was lost in this mad fumble

Santa’s little granddaughter was named Little Mim
Her adorable personality had an enormous hold on him
She was sassy and fun, and loved him ever so much
He had sixty-five photos of her on his kitchen hutch.
Little Mim’s curly hair was a treat to the reindeer crew.
They wanted to touch it, acted like it was fresh and new.
She loved the elves, and visited them in the work shop.
They watched her twirl, dance, sing, jump, skip and hop.
Little Mim brought such joy to the North Pole.
All of the workers loved her curious soul.
They taught her to make the toys, and wrap them too.
They loved everything about her, she was never blue.
Santa bragged so much about his granddaughter to others.
They rolled their eyes behind his back, and these were his brothers.
Never appreciating anything he did, not understanding him.
They also could not appreciate the adorable Little Mim.

Santa, Elf and Rudolph argued about -
Whose charisma Christmas can’t do without.
Santa bragged all human kind
Loves him as a mastermind.
Elfy turned green, Rudolph pouted his snout.
Elfy then struck a pose: “A cocky claim!
Despite the fact that all elves look the same,
Our gifts and toys are diverse
All around the Universe -
To rate our role just second best? For shame!”
Rudolph pranced on his dignity with pride,
Took his conceited co-workers aside.
Explained that without his sleigh
Gifts won’t see the light of day.
Neigh! And off he flounced for a joyful ride!

Jay’s older brothers used to torture him.
They’d say, “Let’s have a harmless bit of fun”~~
then tell him tales about a red-eyed ghost.
Poor little Jay would tremble, scream, and run.
The plots they wove grew scarier with time.
They bragged about their creativity.
They didn’t know what Jay had known for years:
there WAS a ghost that only he could see.
It hovered in the woods behind their house
and peered at Jay, who often played outside
alone at dusk, or in his room at night
and looking out his window. “Stop!” he cried.
He wished the ghost would haunt his mean old brothers
instead of him, and then those glowing eyes,
he saw no more. His brothers changed! They were
subdued and nice to him, to his surprise.

Sadie liked to talk tough
because she was soft, an easy target
she fell prey to people who take advantage of nice
her tough words kept people away
it is not that they feared her
it is that they thought she would be tough
not understanding how easy she was
she often bragged that she had slugged or slapped someone
Fake advertising that had the desired effect.

His reflection Mike saw in the pool.
"I could kiss myself I look so cool,"
bragged the boy, bending low.
In the pool he fell, so
what a wet kiss he got, the big fool.
