Baby It Is Cold Outside

I can hear the mouthless wind
loudly howling outside my window
Its wingless unseeable form whipping through
 the leafless trees
riding the branches wildly
And blowing falling flakes onto every available space
and covering them in white giving them
   admirable shapes

Oh yes indeed
what a magical sight to gaze upon
And although I happily enjoyed watching the snow soundlessly gliding down
kissing the ground softly and forming beautiful landscapes
The harshness wind is toothlessly bitting through my bones with its frigidness

So I think it’s time to turn up the fireplace for some heat for my chilly bones
And maybe a cup of delicious hot cocoa to warm my soul

Because
baby it is cold outside

(After Langston Hughes)

I hadn’t known
my infertility was their problem;
The adult table contracts
from a toddler’s wide wobble
while over a gavel — I mean,
a rattle — and in between
chip resistant plates
advice is served, lukewarm.
“You’re trying too hard,”
says the pregnant one
who glows like a dim nightlight.
Another nurses as though
she was the one feeding off the babe
and why, why couldn’t the loud
suckling swallow her oblivious
“I get pregnant if he just looks at me.
I couldn’t even imagine
being barren.” A girl’s head gilds
jeaned thighs with the sweet
piercing of curls, but the mother sighs
“Go on, now" and to me quips
“I should just give you
one of mine.” Then the cake is lit,
another year has passed
away. Happy Birthday
to you and you and you —
It hollows me from the outside
in. Tonight soundlessly breaks.
The tot eyes the trick candle,
makes a wish. Wait and
wait and wait and...

This is Mine, All Mine by Chuck Keys

Fall day, perfect,
Sunny brisk alive.
Filtered rays of sunlight.
Shimmering through semi barren trees
Almost skeletal
Scattered blown leaves
Patiently waiting their first winter freeze,
So - very serene, calm, barely a sound,
A bird or two chirping
Sounding lost,
Looking about ready.

There, a small sparse bush
Proudly showing a tiny new green innocent bud,
Nonchalantly waiting about.
His chance to grow,
Fading with shortened cooler days coming

On the trail, my dog,
At my front, back and
                                      … side,
Protectively jumping, sniffing, flying, yelping
Majestically prancing about and over,
Manly pawing his ground,
Feeling heat from
The October daytime warmed earth
Dried decaying broken leaves of time fading,

     In motion,
     Wind behind his gate,
     Cantering soundlessly but hard, manly
     Racing airborne paws;
Panting with passion, drooling in chase,
     Soaring gleefully effortlessly in-flight,
                                                                       ... off the ground
                                                                       ... leaping high, higher, highest
     Endlessly into the wilderness,
     On his ground. His movements
                                                           … echoing, uncontrolled.

The tamed beast; driven as ever,
Head locked rigid aimed forward, high, tongue draped aside out
Eyes opened squinting into the wind, starring affront
Nose twitching alive on fire in hunt,
Tail erect, straight as an arrow on
Legs in sync with one another, together
Body pulsing as one, muscles taught,
On guard, with pride and ownership.
     He stops, panting eyes piercing,
… side to side, front to back
"This is mine, all mine" ... he says
... he says to his daddy.

Premium Member The Raven of Baptism River

Far as my eyes can see, 'till lake touches sky,
Earth beats as one; Poplar, Jack Pine & Birch all
Sing with the White Throated Sparrow, our Planet's
Love songs.

Sloping (5'canopy) an ancient Deer trail along the
Baptism River (flowing into Lake Superior) I startle a
Buck during his midday Nap. Soundlessly lifting up,
He elegantly bounces away.

From above, a dark object swoops in, Brother
Raven is curious, (always a sentinel for Hawks
And Bald Eagles). I stand motionless, willing my
Neo-Cortex to flood my aura with peace; as I
Extend my arm and gently imitate the Raven's
Welcome call, a double-beat "Caw caw"...I am
Here Raven, I am me". My heart quickens as
He alights on my arm, talons gripping my
Forearm gently, but firmly. Cocking my head,
I look deeply into his obsidian eyes to his
Soul...he imitates me, tilting his head in unison,
letting my gaze enter. Images from high race
Thru my mind...the rushing river...undulating
Tree tops...in an instant, we have become
Brothers of the wild, as I softly shake my arm
To set him free.
"I am me, Brother Raven, I am me"

Premium Member Serenity's Last Serenade

*A small lake named Serenity am I,
well hidden here among the fragrant pines;
reflecting the **cerulean of sky
till Sun behind the distant peak reclines.

***Now humming bugs crepuscular emerge
to greet the twilight’s creeping. Next a fawn
has soundlessly appeared upon my verge.
A lapping in the stillness. . . then she’s gone.

*Dawn arrives. I’m longing to be painted
**once again by sun, the color azure.
Jubilant that I remain untainted,
***I croon to nature, rippling my rapture.

New creatures on two legs disrupt my peace!
Who comes here? Must my serenade now cease?

Premium Member Silently She Drowns

Drifting between love and hate
chained spread-eagled in a tug-of-war
of extreme emotions pulling relentlessly;
her body aches ... her mind bubbling,
a boiling cauldron pleading for release.
In her parched throat a stifled scream
soundlessly quivers, then retreats
into the dark chasm deep within
cowering in the chilly dungeon
where her heart lies slowly bleeding.
Torn to shreds her dreams hang
in front of her misty eyes, blurred...
she struggles between the choice
of fire and water, courage and defeat.

A key turns...the door slams...footsteps.

His loud voice calls; her body trembles
as yet again she reluctantly succumbs
to overpowering waves of helplessness...
Silently she drowns in fearful anticipation.

Premium Member Merry Christmas

The cold feet of winter step slowly
past December’s green leaves and red berries
hung from window sills and door jams.
Brightly wrapped in silver shooting stars
tied tight with ribbons of challis and satin bows,
hope of tomorrow lies shining beneath sparkling
scenes of jolly smiling fantasies.
Past remembrance of happier times,
dreams lie untouched,
packaged in soft tissue and gentle smiles
against the breathy whispers of shortened days
and the dark of evening reverie.

Laughing fragrance of cinnamon, tickles
past iced fingers on frozen window panes
as the cider is heated, only to be left chilling,
untouched, beside sweet wishes in sentimental ink,
filled with ephemeral thoughts of fictitious emotions
marking the passing of another day,
as if transcending all others, that like it, passes, sunrise to sunset,
one turn of the earth, special only because it falls at this time of year.
A gentle brush of the hand against
the worn wood of a varnished life
sends a sparkle of glitter spilling from the torn seal,
cascading unnoticed to the cold floor.

Silence permeates the walls of this brightly adorned space.
Only the low volume of distant voices,
murmured from the flickering screen that sits alone
atop the meticulously cleaned table in the corner,
breaks the crystal glaze and thaws the solitude.
In each object on each table is revealed the joy that could be,
the remembered smiles, the bright brown and blue glints of
excited anticipation that fill the frames,
and used to fill this room.
Time now broken, hands of the clock frozen,
I stare at the brightly glowing, twinkling lights,
as my liquid sorrow fills my unfocused eyes
and I soundlessly whisper a lonely, Merry Christmas.

Haiku for Hidden Habitats

Mournful doves coo
Bullfrogs call from tall green reeds
         Traffic rushes by

Fox quietly treads
     Rabbits from their warrens peak
        Traffic rushes by

Snake moves soundlessly
the hawk glides on wind whispers
         Traffic rushes by

Shy yellow flutters
Doe statues stand in the field
        Traffic rushes by

Traffic rushes by
      Unaware of hidden gifts
          Precious habitats

Picture Postcard

The air sighed heavily
as Winter rested its head
on soft somber clouds
lightened earlier by a sifting
of rain, snow and ice.

It smiled softly at the moon
which, once more, made
a welcomed appearance
in the mantle of night’s sky
sprinkled lightly with stars.

It shivered considerably
near the trees in the cities
wearing their crystal jackets,
that glimmered slightly
with moonbeams smile.

It whispered quietly close
to sleeping houses bedecked
were pristine white hats,
fringed along their sides
with crystalline tassels.

It applauded the sun
as it soundlessly arose
presenting to the world
a postcard bejeweled
with Winter’s muse.

Premium Member Old Age

Dawn seeps soundlessly in to scatter the darkness.
Around is silence and quiet and calm.
From my lofty balcony, I can admire the serenity
Of the vast immensity of the ocean, all smell of balm.

Let tranquillity invade my lonely soul, O Lord.
The arduous day will soon be full of all its pains.
And I am old, too old to face the vexatious turmoil
That surrounds me, for I am all aches and sprains.

How can I face the rough and tumble of this misery?
I need wisdom to discern all that is foolish and vain,
I need peace to avoid worries and other upsets.
I need love to forgive others’ injuries and bane.

Life is short and I’m much too old to bear pains.
Death will be a relief from all that troubles me.
However life is precious and I will live it through,
Only with your genial grace that comes from Thee.

Premium Member If only you knew

On the eve of that somber, stormy night,
I began to see strings of spring swirling soundlessly
along the thread-thin blade of this culinary cutlery.
Why does gravity lay on thick in this silver steel accessory?
If only you knew, where there is a subtle screech of harmony,
there is a violent war viciously humming melancholy.
As the dust of what was once obscure drops from the passing clouds,
it sets in an assembly of soft, dull vowels,
waiting for the rug of grass to spread a path to the furthest mountain.
Why do I feel no raging colors from the twilight
yet see them so vibrantly?
How do I know nothing of summoning my movements,
when this adrenaline speaks distantly?
Alone, a rush of flame once formed, now shows the demons in the storm.
When this flesh and bones become one with the unpredictable elements,
I hope what prevails is the lore of my regiments,
where I bled into the disasters of my own shortcomings,
learning to rest without a bruise as I drown.

Inconstant Beloved

At eventide,
Under the roseate glow
Of the receding evening sun
I sauntered down the road
To where my beloved dwell
Not far-off from my own abode

Fast by his threshold
A low moan issued from his room
I made open the unlocked door
And so I happened upon him
Mightily taking his mistress
My eyes grew wide in shock

I made as if to storm,
But then stopped
Loosed upon me, an exquisite pain
Felt with every fibre of my being
Soundlessly, I turned around
Post-haste, homeward bound

In great dolour, I walked onward
Carrying my enfeebled feet
Heedless of the lowering clouds
Lightning flashing, thunder pealing
Yet I walk onward
And so the heaven opened

Pouring, the rain
The entire me suffused with it
Thus I quiver in frost, yet
I walked my leaden leg in the drenching rain
And so the inky blackness of the night cast over me

The evanescent rain went home
Afterwards , I gained my shelter
All rain-drenched
I laid, inert in my bed
With an unblinking stare,
My eyes cast into the void

Benightedly, I fell in the arms of Morpheus
And I saw the door opened with a groan
Came in, my inconstant lover
He drew nearer and sat fast by me
I couldn't cast a look at him
For scalding tears welled up in my eyes

He pillowed my head on his chest
And nursed me in his arms
Touched his lips to my locks
Now patting, now caressing
My shoulder, my tresses
His heart beating pitter-patter

He held the nape of my neck
And with an undertone voice
Whispered to my ear
Forgive my failings, my Inamorata
You're a vision of beauty,
And you're my true love.

I harkened to the honeyed words
Falling from his silver tongue
My heart leapt
Thus, hungrily,
I bathed his lips with sensuous kisses
And I melted into his embrace.

I arouse from my slumber, behold!
E'en the murky darkness of the night
Has passed away
And the sun, smiling in the heavens
But my heart, still heavy with pain
Alas! Who to bring solace to my lugubrious tear-stained visage

Despicable Friend

One
Man
cries out
soundlessly,
tears of agony.
Reflections dance on a black pool
Life ravages slowly. Taking a small bite daily.
Desperation eventually becoming mankind's dearest despicable friend.

All morning
the river wore a thick fog
along its length, until
a great looming shape emerged,
tall, gliding almost soundlessly
towards me, becoming the bow
of a ship parting the fog,
escorted by two tug boats
churning the water,
the deep throb of their diesel
engines sending a shudder
through the air.

The sheer wall
of the ships hull slowly passed,
tapering to a stern and trailing
a wheeling throng of seagulls
in its wake, their bright wings
catching a column of sunlight
that had suddenly broken through
the fog, freeing what was there
hidden in the unseen
to come forth into the known.
