Best Skims Poems
There she stands
Centre stage for all to see
Tall and slender
Precariously she balances.
I reach out for her
Draw her to me
My hand skims her body
Slowly reaching her skirt.
Playful fingers find hidden areas
Delighted her legs spring forth
Displaying the very beauty
Of her delicately adorned skirt.
Gaily she dances around
Dizzily twisting and turning
In the brightness of day shading
She gently tends to my needs.
Personal ballerina takes to toes leaping
Merrily bobbing up and down
As emotional to her performance
Clouds cry a thousand tears for her.
Reaching our destination
Slightly shaken, she leans
Watches me quietly drips
Against the wall.
Reminiscent of the day's fulfillment
We acknowledge one another silently
Restful knowing we shall be
One once more.

Where doubts dissolve and roads disband,
there lies a quiet crescent beach
to crown the sea with golden sand.
A breath beyond the city's reach,
where waves recede like moving glass,
there lies a quiet crescent beach.
When evening fades and stars amass,
the silver sky consumes the sea
where waves recede like moving glass.
When moonlight skims the tallest tree
through wisps of fog and fragrant mist,
the silver sky consumes the sea.
Along the shore where waves persist,
the sunrise melts through violet clouds,
through wisps of fog and fragrant mist.
The sky discards its gauzy shrouds
where doubts dissolve and roads disband.
The sunrise melts through violet clouds
to crown the sea with golden sand.

"Grey Rock"
skims a frozen lake
the surface never cracks
complex post tenure stoic
disorder done delivered dead
deliberate do not disturb
listen silence loudly shrouds
walking dead half in
shadow world half out

Narrative
I’m struck by the stark contrast
of her image
which leaps out
against a black background
Meeting the gaze
of her piercing blue eyes
I find her so beautiful
much more alluring than the Mona Lisa
A colourful teal and gold turban
hides her tresses
perhaps giving emphasis
to a solitary pearl earring
which skims the collar of her gown
Her enigmatic expression
hides a secret
Parted ruby red lips
are poised
as if to speak
yet,
they will never reveal her identity

Ekphrasis
Sue lurks in the shadows of the night
She stands on the street corner in the red light area of town
Her body is silhouetted by street light flickering through the naked trees
Wrecked by years of drug abuse she craves her next fix
Skin-tight clothing outlines every curve of her aching body
High-heeled shoes and fishnet tights complete her seedy outfit
It's a bitterly cold November night; Sue pulls her jacket around her body,
it only just skims the hem of her miniskirt, giving no protection from the elements,… she struggles desperately to keep warm
Eventually a car pulls up,
A guy rolls down the window and she saunters over
After a brief conversation she gets in and they drive away
He’s in the market for sex
Desperation forces her to sell her body
Inspired by but not for contest

{ FREEDOM “We may want to linger, to stay, to arrest the flow and talk about it, photograph it, lyricize it. Yet this beauty is mercurial and we must let it go, for it is already slipping away to be replaced by the new.” -Stuart Sovatsky }
YELLOW FIELD OF WHEAT
Angel of Death skims blacker than tar
a skeletal knock overturning bowl of oats
smelling of frankincense and ashes
to carry you to a yellow field of wheat
where you will dance radiant waltzes
haloed free
your laughter pranced across blue walls with
Michael Jackson, Spider-Man, cheeky elves
relishing Kentucky Fried Chicken as you
played scrabble with forlorn neighbour
bony body birthing revolutions of
roulette with green life and grey death
how you endured those precision needles
wanting to drum tapered fingers on
waiting desk overflowing with car sketches
your thirteen year old bald head smiling
veins on an enchanting spring moon as our
hidden tears crystallised hospital sheets
we tried to keep up with you scoffing
encyclopaedias, Dickens and muffins alike
cancer like a chess game mastered chemo
doctors and nurses becoming kings or pawns
time was now or endless pathos stalking minds
Laurel and Hardy keeping hearts unlocked
on Merlin’s star-patterned couch you will
jokingly converse with Pele and his team
soccer ball silent under quiescent table
my ink cannot pen sad lines as I feel
your lips still sucking dripping nipple
freedom moonwalks on a
yellow field of wheat

Swung somewhere outside of the rhythm.
Life season flavor, a joy to savor, is sublime.
Produced upon the pristine sabulous shore.
Simply aware of cloud skims steep and soar.

Half a mile from the shore
boats turn into diving fish,
the sky roars by
derailed by the horizon.
The Lake Erie ferry
skims the crashing crests
rises as a seagull,
scooping up the flying spray.
We passengers go below
abandoning the deck
to the scouring winds.
Children are gathered up
into protective huddles.
I catch my reflection,
my grin is fixed and stiff.
The skipper calls out:
this is normal for the time of year!
The tense mood of the cabin calms.
My jaw aches
for the rest of the day.

It sped through the night like a stone skims a pond,
Out to the stars, and what lies beyond.
Where will it go, what will it see,
Amongst nebulous giants, and strange galaxies.
Will it find life, has our earth got a twin,
Will it find the answers, how did we begin.
Encountering mysteries we'll never know,
Oh speeding traveller, I envy you so.
To explore the universe, the fate of a comet,
Given the chance, I'd ride upon it.

see
even the lights
they live
a bike skims the riverbank
fish leap, catch the sunlight
like bursts of laughter
above the morning water
noon. hot summer
children are learning to sing
golden shafts slip through
open church roofs
an empty stone bridge
people returning home, carrying
things. the ferries are lighting
up for the night tours
streetlamps oil lamps
along the paths and into homes
sky bursting, spilling stars
into every child’s dream
See
even the lights
They live.

I would love it if Soupers could give me some critical feedback. I don't even mind very very
strong critiques as long as they're constructive. I'm always encouraged by all the positive
comments you all give me, but I think it's time to upgrade my writing skills. ;) So come on
and take my poem to pieces, people! :D

Afternoons the sky shuts down around the swamp's warning tapes
propped up with restoration piping and dirt leak fencing.
We’re fleeing toward the wild, seeking the names and shapes,
the same way the Cedar Waxwing flit and grip for berries tree to tree.
Canada Geese are easy, they lead off down the lane leaving residue,
Widgeons have green stripes and gold stripes, one American
the other European, and they’re all mumbling our family phew-do
they didn’t burn the kid, they can’t keep the house clean, drugs…
Blink away the cold wind tears. Forget all that, only remember
Shovelers have the long low profile and the long bill from studies
in New Zealand, like a deep breath, we set aside work, unlimber
spy the race of killdeer away from their guarding territory in gravel.
Our boss didn’t try to replace us, he ducked out to a new job
leaving the crime ringing in our ears like the police car roaring past.
Head down, we tunnel under the high way finding the dunk and bob
of mergansers and their hallowed or red heads,
remarking differences when the sudden scream of honking
mallards flee up river. Caught off guard, we wonder did we cause
all this pain? The rise and dunk flying goldfinch happily chirping
cling to the thistle, their favorite waste near the waste water
ponds where all the Black River water flows for cleaning
spilling into the nesting lower stages of the tertiary treatment.
That’s all this is, treatment for the shock wave week riding
current events on our shoulders, almost like the red-tailed hawk
that screams and skims our head, rising up to the setting sun
turning the sky purple and pink and bruised. That’s when wood
ducks skim into view, our breath captured and then steaming undone
but soon the heavens offer confirmation, blue angels
with their huge oversized wings soar in pairs down as gift.
We hold each other then, let screams silence, detail enriched.

Helicopter in the sky,
Looking like a dragonfly,
Skims along through cloud and air
In search of landing who knows where.
Whirring blades are all a’blur;
From below, we’d all concur
How it resembles, in its flight,
An insect waiting to alight.
Yet instead of seeking nectar,
It’s an accident detector
Or a taxi for commuters
On their iPhones or computers.
Helicopter in the sky,
Seeing you, I wonder why
With all that space that you must cover,
Sometimes you just sit and hover.

Out of the sea, oh Majestic Prince,
In a spray of foam so green.
Into the air in freedom's dance,
A sight that must be seen.
The Orca leaps into the air
Before our eyes... amazed.
So graceful leaping t'wards the sun.
With joyful hearts, we gazed.
He skims along the ocean green
Then leaps before our view.
One of God's most majestic beasts,
He lifts our hearts anew.

I saw it in a film: his city is beautiful.
Snow is everywhere, the trees are crowned
with it, and ice skims the harbor,
frosts ships, going nowhere. Even when
he held me, there was ice in his heart,
Ice in the pale blue of the washed-out
sky beyond his closed eyelids, ice
beading his vodka skin, and
"You are hot," he said, "Hot,
hot, hot..."

Blank verse
For chasing the blues away
What better way is there
Than a walk on a sandy beach
With the wind in your hair
Watching the foam on the sea
As it’s whipped up by the wind
Imagining tunes being played
On the rocks as the wind skims
Limpets clinging to life
Immovable objects for sure
The seagull hoping some might fail
Falling to the shore
You can’t help but smile at the dogs
With the wind up their butts
Running in circles trying hard
To catch whatever is up
The funniest sights are the humans at play
Hanging on like grim death to the cord
As their kites swirl and sway
Trying hard not to swear as the wind
carries it away
