DESSERT TABLE

Yes, it’s a beautiful spread
A tantalizing sight
With not Cezanne depth or solidity, but
Our hostess’ fond delight

She’s gathered not justs -
Not just cakes, cheeses and fruit
But a famous pot of snowball flowers,
A tall bottle of ultra-expensive wine, to boot

Now witness her many noted guests
Completely sated, become indecorous, loud,
A regular old-times gathering –
This flouncy, pot bellied, gut roaring crowd

And there are eager eyes, thrust noses
The sober might spy
Peering through banister slats, through cigar smoke.
For just one taste they would die

A wedge from an extant white, coconut cake,
Circus of green wrapped sweets,
Strawberry shortcake, cheesecake
An invitation what they seek

I fear, though, this luxury shall go elsewhere
The pastries, cheeses, fruits gathered all,
The youngsters, discovered, sent off to bed,
And cookie, chauffeur and butler shall have themselves a ball

To Eat A Peach

Spring is here.
The delicate tree blossoms replace
the delicate white lights of Winter.
From the petals fruit will grow.

Pears, plums, apricots, cherries,
       nectarines...
Peaches.

I set the unripe soft rose and yellow
    orb on the windowsill.
Two days later I tenderly lift it
and gently squeeze its warmth before
    I wash it.

Biting into it...
     the sweet liquid is Ambrosia.
The juice runs down my chin onto
     my tee.
I greedily suck the peach’s flesh dry.

I daydream as I munch.
Peach cobbler, peach pie with a lattice crust,
peach shortcake, peach muffins,
stewed peaches, peach tea bread,
slices on your cereal, slices in a bowl with cream.

OR...only for dessert?
How would a
chicken breast soaked in a peach marinade taste?
My taste buds begin chattering.

Summer’s here!
corn on the cob, okra, tomatoes:
small ones that pop in your mouth
and big beefy wedges that
garnish crisp celery slices, carrot medallions,
tender Bibb lettuce, sliced mushrooms, cucumbers,
asparagus, broccoli, Vidalia onions, cauliflower...

Watermelon, blueberries, cantaloupe,
      strawberries, honeydews, raspberries...

Juicy hot dogs, spicy barbecue, thick charbroiled hamburgers,
hot German potato salad, 3-bean salad, macaroni salad,
potato chips and French onion soup dip,
soft pretzels dipped in brown mustard, popcorn...

chocolate chip cookies, Snickerdoodles,
strawberry shortcake,
chocolate cake with red, white and blue frosting for the 4th,
apple pie
  — softball, Mom, doggies —

I awake with a start. There is drool
      on my pillow.
Another day begins but it’s really
       not another day.
It’s the same day I’ve been living
       since 1 May 2017 ~
The day I let the dentist pull
out the last 5 teeth I had
       in my lower jaw.

And as I come to consciousness
       my tongue pushes
against and spills out over the
the soft toothless tissue that burns constantly
and is covered in a thick gooey saliva ~ place a
       teaspoon of Elmer's
glue in your mouth ~ if
you care to have a taste
       of my reality.

Summer’s here.
Clear your palate.
Clean your plate.

Head Chef

The special today,
is Tom's Stew,
more than enough,
for all of you.
Homemade bread,
with garlic, and chives,
real butter without calories,
dripping from the sides.
Strawberry Shortcake,
heaping with cream,
fresh from scratch,
right out of a dream.
Eat all you want,
get happy, and stuffed,
take some with you,
he insist you have enough.
Open all night,
his lights always on,
place your orders,
before it is all gone.

Premium Member Little Johnnie's Ache

Little Johnny came home from school with a bellyache
Naturally Mom feared the most recent local outbreak
Johnnie thankfully had no fever, she suspected it might be a fake
But strange and most bizarre Johnnie had no appetite for steak
Or even for his ultimate favourite strawberry shortcake

The next morning Johnnie barely could awake
Didn’t want to go to school because of a backache
Mom thought the cure might just be a nice big pancake
Or maybe the warm chocolate muffins that she’d bake
But Johnnie just wanted to curl up with his pet rattlesnake

In the afternoon, when Little Johnny mentioned a toothache
Mom reached for the thermometer in case the first time was a mistake
She sent Johnnie for a nap and sat pensive as she took her coffee break
Out the window she saw askew the mounds of leaves to rake
She got up and tiptoed up the stairs to see what was at stake

She found Johnny pouting wide-eyed and awake
As she extended to him a warm loving handshake
In her heart she felt a sudden jolt of earthquake
Poor Little Johnny was growing up at double take
And suffering acutely from his very first heartbreak

Strawberry Shortcake

No store bought jump starts
Cool creamy dough kneaded by hand
Baked until golden then cooled so slightly
Carefully sliced and slathered in butter
Because margarine would never do
Sun ripened berries diced and stemmed
Tossed gently with sugar forming the glaze
Fresh heavy cream beaten in a chilled bowl
Using a wire whisk until stiff peaks stand
Placing the layers one on top of the next
Then garnish with diamond wedges of fruit

Premium Member A Dreamy Dessert

A delectable dessert,
a delicious dream.
Fancy French fairy cakes...no!
Strawberry shortcake
with thick Cornish cream.
Melt in mouth.
Joy!

I am thankful for many things, my good health is not the least.

Birthday Cake

Maybe you like chocolate,
With the icing smooth as silk
Or shortcake filled with strawberries
To serve with ice-cold milk.

You might select a carrot cake
With yummy cream cheese frosting
Or mocha or red velvet –
All the choices are exhausting!

It’s possible that you would choose
An ice cream filled confection;
A pie or tart would be, to some,
Their number one selection.

Whatever one is served to you,
With candles all aglow,
Will be just perfect on your day
To make a wish and blow.

So happy birthday! Hope your cake
Fulfills your appetite.
A birthday comes but once a year,
So take a giant bite!

Going To Market

Oh, we need honey?
And milk?
And cheese?
Well, I will get them
If you please.

I am now leaving.
My friend
Is now talking.
I take a detour
As we are out walking.

Soon, we are lost
In the jungle
And squelching
Through the wet bog.
I think I hear belching.

We are face to face
With a creature.
A snake!
I wish for my home
And berry shortcake.

We are now running
For our dear lives.
I think what I see
Is a tree of beehives.

Our fate is uncertain
As we run toward the tree.
My friend can keep going.
But I fall. Oh, my knee!

Just as I think
It is time to give up
A chap comes along
With a cute little pup.

"Howdy-do," says the chap.
I look up.
What a guy!
"You see," I then say.
"I am just about fried."

I get in his wagon.
I am embarrassed to say
That I kind of like this dude.
But just then I heard a sound:
A cow mooed.

I jump off the wagon
And run toward the barn
With doors made of silk.
Then I steal from the cow
A bucket of milk.

I go to the back
And it stinks
But there's cheese!
I take all I want
If you please.

Then I look in my pocket
And there is no money
But lo and behold!
A sweet comb of honey!

I run away home
Just as fast as I can.
"I just went to market,"
I tell my mom Fran.

She looks at the bounty.
She looks kind of suspicious.
She tastes all my treasure.
She thinks it's delicious!

My Diet

-
Beef and Onion with Oxtail soup Brie Cheese as a base
Eat celery on sour cream and choux pastry as a chase

Pork and beans with coffee apple tart on cinnomon spice

Strawberry shortcake and mandarin on oval tray
Take a slice or two with cream and side plate a lay

There's pineapple and pastry creams to the teeth
but all you need is tooth paste to gargle your seth

My diet is a double one as one don't feed enough

Premium Member A Young Boy's Easter (Re-Post)

In a black morning, hollowed
with eggshell delicacy....not fragile, simply gentle
      with dark chocolate skies
a pajamaed, sleepy ten year old
with a six year old's excitement..
up at five a.m....with his basket ready
                to search out candy eggs

A dew kissed morning, the blossom of an Easter sunrise
which rises to greet a family....a father, a mother, a brother, a sister
a house blessed with a spirit of His presence
so richly apparent, in polished shoes, combed hair, Sunday dress

In hard boiled colored eggs, chocolate rabbits, jelly beans..
baked ham, scalloped potatoes, fruit salad, homemade shortcake
                      assorted aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents...

Being allowed to eat his candy
                             providing he ate
                                 at least
                                    one piece
                                        of broccoli.

Coloring Books

As most people do, I guess I collect things,
Like comics and news papers, also pretty as they be.
But my favorite things to keep are my old coloring books,
Now and then I take them out and ponder a look.

I thought yellow eyes would make Batman look cool,
Yellow and blue tights would make all the girls drool.
How roughly my name is written on each page,
Over and over right hand, left hand, I couldn't decide at this stage.

Theres Bugs Bunny and Barbie I had just started school,
Strawberry Shortcake and Smurfs sure was cool.
From staying in the lines to ways long summers days,
Memories are what they are made of in the hot summers rays.

Lovers and Strangers

Crayons and movies
strawberry shortcake for two
these are things
that belong to me and you
whispers and seaside
a time by the bay

Seconds to moments
things come what may

Airports and highways
always in between
no one knows
the distance
we have seen
memories and moments
lay deep in my soul

Moments to hours
things come what may

Friends lovers and strangers
we became all as one
forgiving and needing
the softness of the sun
but knowing and knowing
we could never be

Sunset to daylight
Moments we were free

And now
that the years
have swept us aside
I watch to the door
surrendering my pride
needing to know
that the seconds will end

You are the reason
I have lived every day
