Fisherman We Were

I can remember,
Those warm sunny days,
As we sat on the beach,
Watching wave after wave.
Seeing the sea grass wave,
In the warm summer breeze,
Droplets of water land on my face,
As we sat on the beach watching the sea.
We walked for miles collecting hundreds of shells,
Carefully climbing the jetty,
The clean sea air is all you can smell.
We hoisted the sail on our small sailboat,
With only one big gust of wind,
We were no longer afloat.
We woke at dawn,
to spend our day on the bay,
Fisherman we were,
Even if only for one day.
All those happy memories,
Etched deep in my mind,
Will remain forever,
By the best dad of all time.

Premium Member Mist Rising

As I sit alone on this rocky shore. The mist rises around my feet and I long for much, much
more. Just to go out to sea and meet the horizon just you and me in our blazon. To feel the
salt water as we sail away to enjoy the beauty of this day in this very protected bay. To kiss
the rose of early bright. Maybe stay way into the night and see the moon and billions of
stars. Reach up and touch the loving God. The one who made you for me and made the sea
and misty shores that consumes all my lonely and tiresome chores.

The Sea of Sorrow

All alone in the middle of pain-
drowning in a sea of sorrow -
a demented asylum of unmerciful distress-
that destroys all hopes of tomorrow-

these dark crashing waters-
that are fueled by the rain-
are destine to swallow me-
in this cold sea called pain-

my heart beats uncontrollably-
as I frantically gasp for air-
but my lungs are filled-
and my cries are silenced-
by the bitter waves of despair-

where is the sun to dries these waters-
and give long awaited relief-
to a soul that's drowning in a deep sea of sorrow-
pulled under by the currents of grief-

Before & After the Lull

Amber-brown sea oats stand tall -
whistling as ocean breezes gently
blow them in unchartered directions
Voluminous waves impact into jetty rocks
inducing sea urchins to lose their tight grip
from a place of safeness

Watercraft rock recklessly in
turbulent waters. Fishing lines
snap as hopes of a good day's
catch are quickly diminished,
while winds grow intensly
& skies darken to an eerie black

Fears of a possible funnel cloud
now begin to form in reality
Anchors are regained as boat captains'
gear themselves towards safety upon
these waters, aspiring towards
safer havens as ferocity passes

As quickly as darkness has appeared,
radiant rays of sunlight penetrate greyness
of clouds, cutting into glistening waters
like a silver bladed knife cuts thru many
layers of a wedding cake

Life returns to slower pace of normalcy
as a large sea turtle surfaces catching
a bit of solar warmth cast upon this
magnificant world of azure water

Sea oats now stand erect, like small
soldiers protecting their beach,
restrengthening -
for the next tumultous reign
of inclement weather

Jeckyll Island

There once was a boy from Jeckyll Island Sound
He roamed the beach and in the sand he found
A sea shell, a snorkel
A buried grand paw and a shovel
Adventure awaits in the sand mound.

A Happy Camper

.

In the wind I stand
at the edge
where the sea touches
soft the shore.

               There I gaze up
               at the skyline
               where the sea
               expands even more.

Witnessing this
majestic scene,
though small, I feel big,
standing tall.

                But to Sea and Sky,
                what am I?
                Just a happy camper,
                that's all!

Premium Member If I Had My Way

The sea calls my name; to the call of waves I respond
For seven full days with no one I’ll correspond
My fishing gear packed, I board a cabin cruiser
To escape society, man’s worst abuser

The GPS set, I head fifty miles offshore
To a reef where city lights can’t be seen anymore
The sea would remain calm; hey, this is my story
And the galley’s pantry filled with inventory

Gull screeches and dolphin cackles, the only sounds
In each direction a blue horizon surrounds
Since the break of dawn, the grouper have been biting
Catching my dinner; nothing is more exciting

As the orange sun paints clouds pink before it sets
I commune with God and nature, have no regrets
Through the skylight above the cabin’s comfy bed
Venus, Mars and the Milky Way appear overhead

Reminders that I’m but a speck in God’s grand plan
Merely a traveler whose perceptions expand
A lifetime I’d want, but settle for just one week
To live upon the ocean and adventure seek

The Lobsterman

The Lobsterman

She sits alone, hands gripping her coffee cup
Staring out the window at the mist that shrouds the village,
Watching lazy rivulets of moisture meander down the glass
Where is he she wonders, her imagination fearing the worst

She brightens at the crunching sound of footsteps
Approaching up the cottage walk
The door opens, he's home, filling the room with his presence
He removes his slicks as the oceans scent permeates the kitchen

"You're late, I kept your supper on the burner, sit down and I'll get you a plate"
He drops into a chair, acknowledging her offer with a smile
"The traps were light today" he says, "my catch didn't cover the fuel"
He starts to eat the meal she placed before him, his thoughts lost within himself

"Tommy came home from school today, excited about a field trip" she says,"asked if he
could go"
"Its gonna cost $20. I told him I'd talk to you about it"
He looks at her and she can see the pain in his eyes, the stress lines on his face
His eyes red rimmed from too little sleep and too much worry

"I've got to pay my stern-men come Friday, and a payment on the boat is coming due
Might have to let one go til things get better, but a lot less traps I'll be able to pull
Can't make no promises about the field trip, but I'll see what I can do"
He pushes back from the table, says "I'm gonna go take a shower now"

She waits til he comes back to the kitchen and they sit and talk quietly together
Abruptly he says "I'm thinking I may have to sell the boat and take a job in town"
She is startled by his statement, shocked he would consider such a thing
All he knows is lobstering and the sea runs in his veins. Her heart aches for him

"Why don't you sleep on it" she says. "You're exhausted, You need to rest"
Together they retreat to their bedroom, but sleep eludes them both
She lies there thinking how much she loves him, how hard he works to earn their
keep
He lies there thinking of tomorrow, wondering how much longer he can survive

She wakes before the dawn, the bed already empty,
He has departed for the harbor in the dimness of the morn
She knows the sea will always be his mistress, her siren song seducing him each day
She feels the helplessness and fear surround her, and she prays for a better catch

Sailing Relentless Sea

T'was the month of July
should've been sailing upon calm sea,
brightest sunshine
blue sky so clear.

For days and days, it rained and rained
As if the sky's afallin' away,
Bounced wildly about on wall like waves
T'was death we came to face.

Tied ourselves with ropes around our waist
To not to sea be blown and swallowed away
The only thing for us all to do, was pray
Then mates and the capt'n their voices did raise.

Began singing aloud sailor's songs of old
Drowning out their dread in the sea's assault
Sudden shower of sunbeams began to pour right out
Of the opening heavens by gushes of wind, parting clouds.

Hope returned about the crew
They knew the sea would be subdued
Looking through his spyglass out to sea
The capt'n saw our destination appear.

I Could Have...

Upon the dusty shores I watched
the calming waves of sea debauched.
They seem to whisper in my ear
then motioned me to venture near.

Now had I known to swim not sink
I could have held the salty drink.

I drifted deeper into sea
then felt my spirit wander free.
I saw a phantom fierce and wet.
His ghostly ship was sailing yet.
The sea surged up, its laughter hard
and caught the seaman off his guard.

I felt the blow of pounding waves
that pulled me deeper into caves.
Above me, trackless waters grew
then turned the sea a blacker blue!

If only I had learned to float,
I could have grabbed that raft or boat.

The paling smile of sandy beach,
grew far outside my grasp or reach.
When doomed ships wreck when oceans flare,
a ghost must turn the swells that scare,
and sail them first with haunting kiss
then cast the winds that howl and hiss.

I dare you brave this unknown vast
to see a specter raise her mast.
Sea goers know who's at the helm.
For it is I who ride the realm!

But had I learned one swimming stroke,
I could have wrote this as a joke!

Ocean Beyond the Stars

Through them one can see an ocean.

Her ocean.

It's there beyond.

Beyond the stars.

The stars in her eyes.

Upon her sea there are no boats.

If you wade too far, there is no hope
of rescue.

Still where her beaches are,
there's warm soft sand.
For her to walk.
Peaceful and calm.
Save the gentle breeze tickling her arm.
Save the calls of the sea gulls.

She holds some wet stones
cupped
in her left hand.
Shiny and sparkling.
But, not
always
beautiful.
Not always smooth
and soothing
to touch.

She contemplates each in turn.
Her collection.

Then
she gazes out upon the ocean and above it to the stars.
The stars beyond.

And so,
they are reflected there.
Forever reflected there
in her eyes.

Great God Neptune

As the great God Neptune rises from the sea
he wears the Statue of Liberty as his crown
for all to see

he can make the earth shake the waters boil and the winds to blow
everyone must understand that the earth is his kingdom
it is a living thing it deserves and needs your care your blessing
your respect and most of all your love to exist for all eturnity

Neptunes message is simple to understand, to bring peace, freedom
and a clean earth from sea to shining sea
for you and me

Anemones and Shells My Childhood

As I recall my past, it was a sea kissed life
summers spent roaming the Rabbit Burrows
cradled by dunes, beyond Tramore strand
towels stretched out on Woodstown beach
soft powdered sand, surrounded by forest
adventures in the Saleens, daring quicksand
of swimming with dad, high jumping waves
falling, laughing in great gulps of salt water
free and fearless, in our bare bronzed years

It was a sea salted life of wave-washed castles
of tide pools, alive with translucent shrimps
carmine anemones sucked tight to the rocks
periwinkles, hermit crabs, a world of shells
baby pink crabs moving sideways over stone
textured algae, salted, crisping in the heat
our faces stinging with sand and hot sunshine
we spent hours with nets, exploring the pools

After months and years of living near the sea
the landscape became an essential part of me.
I saw fuchsia ballerinas pirouette the breeze
sea pinks, grassy rosettes swaying on cliff tops
rocket, tiny lilac petals with succulent leaves
valerian, a candy floss pink, sweetly scented
We picked them and pressed them into books

I recall my child’s life with a skipping heart
when summers seemed to shine eternal
The rock pools taught us to treasure nature
togetherness bred a strong sense of self
a respect for the sea, the taste of freedom
when I open a book, I often find a flower
and shells - this child is forever combing

Cruise Ship

Me and my wife are on a cruise ship,
Enjoying the Caribbean sun.
We are relaxing on our deck chairs,
With a cold bacardi rum.

We are getting a lovely tan,
Cruising in the sun.
The reggae music from the band,
Everybody having fun.

There is a nice sea breeze in the air,
As we are cruising by.
The sea reflecting beautifully,
The Caribbean sky.

The atmosphere on the ship
Is like a banquet in the sun,
With all the gorgeous food to eat
yum, yum, yum, yum, yum.

You cannot remove the memories
Of that holiday in the sun,
For the time we had on the ship
Was so wonderful and fun.

Premium Member Heart At Sea

Will thou remember me while adventures sought
On timbered ship of mast and sail
Cross seas so danger fraught

Or will exotic lands cause my visage to pale
Receding over time in thy dreams
as though I don deep veils

As you follow stars, I beseech moonbeams
To guide you safely onto shore
and betimes return to me

Mayhap I will become just a tale of yore
That you recall on storm tossed nights
when your mind is beset and sore

So while thou art here and our hearts unite
Within mine arms, I'll fill thy mind
I'll not let the sea win without a fight

Her siren's song seafaring men will follow blind
Mayhap the sea has met her match in me; womankind
