Best Ruffled Poems
I didn’t ask for help.
Yet someone heard
my inward crying voice
without a word.
“When the student is ready
a teacher will appear”
somehow it seems these teachers
pop up everywhere.
Their words were subtle
pointed darts
that caused me endless
fits, and starts.
There was no Hallelujah Chorus
no heraldry of trumpets din
just a presence in my life
every now and then.
I never asked for help
yet somehow they saw my need
and placed within my heart
an ever growing seed.
They cut the bindings loose
freed me from my tethers
drifted slowly through my life
without ruffling my feathers.

wind crashes through me
trampling everything around—
I crumble. I lied.

Ebony inks the emptiness of space,
highlighting the stars that adorn the night.
And as Luna rises to take Her place
day's shifting shadows morph into twilight:
as the moon and sun attempt to embrace.
Dusk dons a sequined, ethereal shawl,
as distant stars twinkle in the darkness.
And the sound of a chirping cricket's call,
breaks the silence imposed by dusk's starkness:
its lone serenade; heralding nightfall.
Shadows surrender their shape to the night;
like rippling ribbons ruffled by the moon.
And playing hide and seek with Luna's light;
they get haphazardly scattered and strewn,
stretching and shrinking in and out of sight.
Dawn's first light pierces the night's ebon heart,
thrusting through its impenetrable shield.
And fragmented silhouettes fall apart
as darkness capitulates, forced to yield
to the sun, as a new day gets its start.

A warm breeze rustles through the leaves
as flowers bloom this summer day.
'round wind ruffled petals it weaves.
Windswept, the weeping willows sway,
and songbirds nest in branches high
as flowers bloom this summer day.
Drizzling showers rain from the sky
in little puddles on the ground,
and songbirds nest in branches high.
When the sun appears, they’ll be found
bathing and preening without fears
in little puddles on the ground.
Their twitters, music to my ears
while the zephyr is blowing free,
bathing and preening without fears.
Such antics are soothing to me.
A warm breeze rustles through the leaves
while the zephyr is blowing free.
'round wind ruffled petals it weaves.

Inside a warm hold
Ruffled feathers
Avoid the worst
Of any weather
Deep in the boughs
And out of sight
A sparrow passes
This stormy night

birds of the same feather
don't always flock together;
while most prefer safety in numbers,
a few just want to be hermits on towers;
there are others which opt to flap farther
where the wingspan room is much wider;
among them, too, are anti-social loners,
and a noisy bunch of social climbers;
most of the birds that flock together,
especially during fair weather,
are not of the same feather!

RUFFLED FEATHERS
We tramp through tall grass
water up to our ass
to disturb wild, winged creatures
and to photograph their awesome features.
We use the greek and latin names
when speaking to our pals
We chase birds from one nest
to strange and poor locales.
We are boorish, giggling louts
disturbing babies with our shouts
poking through their domains
and others thereabouts.
We ruffle their feathers
and disturb sleep and feeding
we jeopardize their habitats
and upset natural breeding.
We have a lot of fun
at winged creatures expense
to get the best of pictures
we climb the neighbor's fence
We trade pictures and stories
about the birds we've seen
But I think that this behavior
is boorish and obscene.

Rickety rackety ruffled ridiculous Rhine,
Make her hair stick out like a ball of twine
Let it fall out on the floor and in church too
Put a permanent skunk in her chimney wazoo
Make her look silly in front of thousands I say
Take away her fun, sabotage her in every way
If she takes a step, let her trip on her ugly tongue
Do not let her make friends or have any fun
Slickety Slackety shuffled sure enough complete
Take away her taste buds to taste anything sweet
Give her cheeks a headache, make her front teeth crazy
Let her be known as a witch who is nothing but lazy

Alliteration
Crimson coats
Truth laces on the sleeves
Layered pinks
Weary wants within
A chink in the sky
Chapels clarify
Words that smelled green
Promises pristine
Doting on the dark dew
Musk settles anew
Unruled pages
Ruled roads
Caveats mistaken
Heart carrying the heaviest load.
The path forsaken
The path forgiven
Some of us aren’t meant to be tamed
Come, this is the way.

Free verse
I envy a cool and calm person,
Unruffled by all of life's stress,
Who takes things in stride and never will hide
From impediments to her success.
It's hard to be that type of being,
So centered and quiet and calm,
Who will watch things unfold and will never lose hold,
Owning neither a worry nor qualm.
Of course, I am far from that person
Who rolls with the punches, serene.
I get flummoxed so fast that you might be aghast
By my feathers, too ruffled to preen.

Ruffled woodpecker in her orange and pink dress
Hopping up and down, drilling on a cookie press.
Dancing to her own melody, a jackhammer’s song.
I see and I smile, glad I meandered along.
