Where Love Grew

Beneath the maple tree
is where our love first started to grow
Green buds of unblossomed love,
basking in the golden dappled light
of spring’s awakening
A sweet kiss given,
sweet as maple ...
given beneath the swaying branches
Dancing to the wind music of spring,
as you lullabied me with sweet whisperings
Under the unshaded maple tree
is where our love first began to seed,
and take root into the heart of me
Beneath the maple tree
is where your love started to grow inside of me

Your love lifted me above the branches so high
It took me beyond the expansion
of the bright blue sky
Lasting longer than time
marked in tree rings to be seen
For in the seed of growth came strength of bond
that flourished on soft emerald grass,
under the shaded maple tree
Through rain and sun,
all storms to pass
Our sweet whisperings of love do last
Within my heart, within my soul,
I am as tall as the maple tree with you
We are still dancing to the wind music
each spring anew
Beneath the maple tree
where our love grew

I don't want to
No I don't
Want to do it
Your way

Your way
Or the highway
That's what
I hear you say
So I'll pack my bags
I'll soon be on my way

You tell me
You don't
Mean it
"Please don't go away!"
If you do it my way
Perhaps then
I'll stay

You don't want to
No you don't
Want to do it
My way
In the end
I guess that's okay
You go that way
I'll go this way
We can choose
The games we play
I'll take my ball
You keep your bat
You keep this
I'll keep that
My mind feels skinny
I think yours is fat

It seems my mind
Has split in two
I was never me
I was always you
I can't leave
What will I do?
My options limited
Yet I have
Quite a few
Tell me
Tell me
What to do.

As I wrote this I thought of my friend Freddie who seemed in
a constant battle with himself. The world is less without him
in the game. I will miss him.

Freddie the frog with the lopsided hop
would travel in circles 'til he tired and stopped,
then jumped into the pond with a giant kerplop
as the bullfrogs laughed and croaked 'til they dropped.

It mattered not where Freddie was bound,
even when swimming he went round and round -
amongst all the pollywogs he was renowned
for going and going and not gaining ground.

Poor Freddie had no trouble just staying busy
but circling and circling made him so dizzy;
he lived in a pond he never could cross
but one thing's for sure, he never got lost.

So no matter your problems, or where you start,
you'll always get home if you just trust your heart!

A Tribute To Freddie Mercury

What happened?
Why did God take you away?
Your music soothed so many
Brought others to tears
Yet everyone danced and sang with you
Following your fingers on the piano keys
You cast your spell over thousands
Your voice was a gift from the gods
You took the stage you were blessed
And you blessed us with your songs
We didn’t know that you were suffering
That you were dying
You kept your pain a secret so we would not worry
You knew we would mourn before your life was over
You knew we would cry and not hear your last songs
How we miss you since you left
Your band continues on
Playing the music that you made famous
It is not the same
You made the music everything that it was
You changed music from the day you sang your first note
No one will ever give what you gave
You gave you life for your fans
We knew it and we loved you for it
Your goodbye left a void that will never be filled
Four word and just for words say what we feel
They are strong words that you gave meaning to
We hear them when we see you on a video
They echo through our ears as we hear your song
God Save the Queen and God bless Freddie
He will always be royalty in our hearts

Controversial
Dead
Alive
Missing
Back again
Gone
Outspoken
Talented
Did I mention dead
Resurrected
Defiant
Ashamed
Humble
Proud
Searching
Angry
Beautiful
Thought provoking
Manic
Depressed
Hurt
Human
Unreliable friend
Still a friend
I can't help but like the guy
He does have a tender side
Yes he pushes too far
Brilliant and flawed mind
Honest
Not particularly kind
Tortured
Tell it like it is
Even when it isn't
But he believes it is
Still I am attracted to his passion
Sadly all his poems are gone
Maybe they'll be back again
I guess what I'm saying
Is that I miss
My friend
Freddie!

Freddie Vassalo is no stranger to controversy. He has stirred the soup many times.
Never boring sometimes mean, other times kind always creative. I do not see eye
to eye with him on many subjects yet I am inexplicably drawn to his personality.
Yes I do miss my friend Freddie, I expect him back any day now.

Regret 3that I Didn'T Get To Know Freddie Dunlop Better

That I didn’t get to know Freddie Dunlop better
Defiant mop of thick white hair - a Thurles face
Slim photographer - single lady – a leviathan in her time
Pictured my youth - talked to me as a person
Wore large pink hats with style and verve
An opinion on every topic - varnished nails her insignia
Morris Minor mirror polished - a smiling face
Masking latest mischief - rascal laughter burbling up
I knew her measure - I knew her loneliness
Not enough to let me help her - defensive joking
Her personal armour – her way of coping

Friendship you offered me freely
Ready always to help and advice
Each comment structured and balanced
Delightful were the words you wrote
Drawing pictures and visions in the mind
Invoking thoughts that inspired
Each phrase and verse chosen well

I read the last poem he wrote before changing his id
to poet aggressor and to me it seemed he knew what
lay ahead. Maybe even welcomed it, I think he had,
had enough for who knows what he was going through
we all wear public faces keep the pain and torment
hidden. Freddie dear Freddie already I miss you so
much I will leave you with his own moving words.

Spoken Words

richness of the heart
the tongue will speak graciously
a bounty of words
spoken tenaciously well
incanting ones included

Mea Culpa

I'm the accuser
blaming myself directly
a sign of my guilt
pointless justification
without any allowance

Missing

at the funeral
unsuccessful burying
mourners in plenty
grave devoid of a body
instead thrown in a furnace

Anticipation

courage is with me
just as long I keep breathing
once I die I'm dead
apprehensively of course
don't know where I'm going yet

I am starting to like Freddie
At least he is steady
He may enjoy the drink
He may bring Liverpool to the brink
Honesty is all you will get
Even if his heart is scorched and bled
He has that iconic ironic smile
His verses crosses the hippocratic oath
From veins his prose flow
His love is pure his demons proudly on display
His bitterness feeds the infinite glass
Of the waiters last call
His words may bite spewing spittle and spite
Alas, who I ask, shall cast the first stone?

Freddie and Fannie

Hey Freddie and Fannie
I am not your nanny,
yet I gave you the big pill
made of 800 bil.

Tell your buddies on Wall Street
whose mothers they would cheat,
that we’re throwin’ the law book
at each scumbag crook.

We’ll seize all the brute’s vile loot
and each golden parachute,
when they jump from the rooftop
we’ll hear a kerplop.

Then we’ll open the champaign
and sadness we won’t feign,
we’ll fashion their carpet bags
into closing bell flags.

Freddie and Felix

Freddie a fury to the red herring dish
Felix zeroed in on the waft of the fish
Freddie the dog winked at Felix
The cat's eyes were double helix
They toggled a shark at the Barth's Park Office

A Poem About My Uncle Freddie

Please don't leave us,
We need you more than you ever know,
We love you Freddie,
And we do not want you to go.

Who would hug us?
And wipe our fears when we are in pain,
Hold us when we needed it the most,
For the past few years.

Forget about the others,
And think about your family for once,
You will be leaving us behind?
We will miss your sweet smiling face,
We will miss your happiness,
We will miss your hugs,
Please don't leave us,
But it won't make us love you any less.

If you chose to go,
Then we will wish you well,
Remeber all the stories you told me.

Memories stay locked in out minds forever,
And when you leave you still be in our hearts,
always and forever.

The Show Must Go On

My heart gently weeps yet again
For the long lost song of Mercury.
I know it’s been some 27 years since he left the stage we mortals call life,
But even now his light still is bright in this darkness we call our lives.
We all still honor his very existence every day.
Even if we don’t know it we carry on the torch of his music,
From merely jamming out to his glorious voice to creating an award-winning biopic about his life with Queen,
We still are the champions of the world even if we bite the dust, because we make sure Freddie lives forever.

His voice is that of angels singing and nobody can outdo it,
Even if you try with all your might he’ll whisk you away with the flick of a microphone,
For even his vocal range is as unique as he was.
Even in just writing a song, he can outdo the norm,
“Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Killer Queen,” and “We Are the Champions” just to name a few.
He drew out the best of people, rocking audiences to the very core,
For Queen belongs to even the loneliest souls of the world, the ones who just don’t belong.
We find ourselves in music, in Queen, in Freddie Mercury, and that you can’t replace.

Life goes on though, we always have to find the will to carry on.
We can continue to carry Mercury’s flamboyant torch onward though,
Keep on passing the torch down to the younger generations.
We can continue to rock out and enjoy life while we can,
Because nothing lasts forever and we don’t know when life will fade.
Queen lives on with Adam Lambert alongside Brian May and Roger Taylor,
Even if Freddie is gone, his life is carried on through Queen and every single one of us.
No matter what, the show must go on, for Freddie Mercury and Freddie Mercury alone.
