Yesterday, I saw a shadow dart across my keyboard.
When I turned to look outside the window,
I spied upon a sparrow playing in the sun.
He was dancing in dramatic fashion
Across the shrubbery that was his home.
I could tell it was a male by his markings.
He was busy with his boasting, and proud.
No longer a fledge, he fluffed his feathers
To parade his prowess to all that might adore him.
Then, he pivoted into a pirouette, and pranced
Most skillfully across the length of a branch
And launched himself into flight.

Today, the sounds of birds cackling and chirping
Inside the shrubbery drew me to the window.
I could see three sparrows engaging in some fun and frolic.
Perhaps it was some flirtatious mating ceremony.
While most sparrows do look alike,
I’m sure that one of them was the dancing bird
I’d seen the day before. I watched briefly and smiled,
Remembering my own courtship and rivals
Who would fancy my choice as their own.
I returned to the monitor and before I could begin
My work, there was a loud thud upon the glass.
I gazed outside and there upon the ground was a small hawk
Clutching the dancer in his talons.

Tomorrow, this bird will not dance.
He will not sing or court another.
And as sparrows are many,
I will no doubt find another to enjoy from this vantage.
I chide myself for failing to warn him of the danger.
I was too busy with my own enjoyment to notice.
Now, I close my eyes and reconstruct those moments
As I attempt to resurrect the dancing bird,
And preserve him....forever.

In the tea trees to the whistling song thrush
I alone hear the first September dawn,
and outside beyond ryegrass, fern and rush
glisten woolly coats of sheep early shorn.
Smell the petrichor and jade scented hedge,
the lambs, the honey bees in pollen’s net -
that botany of sights and sounds, that fledge
of young and new from moonrise to moonset.
See in the mists swamphens and waterfowl
and behold the prismatic dawn of spring -
the morepork on nocturnal moonlit prowl
that casts its eye and spreads its speckled wing.
Oh to feel again its warm gentle breeze
on greensward and dryads in the gnarled trees.

Premium Member All in a flap

A step too far, brings right of passage to a ledge
Fluttering at cliff walls, pushing life’s brittle edge
A sheer instinctive thrust, with no trust to pledge
Now or never moment, undermines fear’s wedge
A chick leaps off, flailing frail wings fail to fledge
Featherweight of hope meets a ten-pound sledge
Crashing straight down, no safety net to dredge
Next guy flaps like mad, landing softly in a hedge

I am empty of empathy
come sympathise with me
Cue the violins,
or just fiddle
like a bad-tempered Roman

Offer me hope:
bring flamboyant symbols,
cheap gold pendants with wings
Maybe a big gaudy
unflappable albatross
nothing too flash,
mind you!

Take my hand,
lead me towards the edge
it’s time to fledge
Sidle me onward,
watch as I waver

Try not be over-critical
of the albatross
He’s become a hanger-on,
too far gone
and addicted to flattery

If I drag you down
or appear inhumane,
it’s all secondary
I’m merely feeling depressed
by a pouch in my brain

A séance sensed
it was next of kin,
X-rays revealed tiny pleats,
masses of tissue within folds of skin
An exorcist said it’s
my vestigial twin
Google diagnosed
(Visual agnosia)
taking shape from within

Oh! And the indifferent
chatbot I confided in,
has begun self-harming!

Premium Member Song of The American Bald Eagle No 12: ABBA

Christ the Redeemer, Bless His Holy Name,
Amen, to the place called Big Bear Valley,
where hails our nation's bird, fair Cali,
the American Bald Eagle ... proclaim.
Naught bald or hairy, females are bigger
than their forever mate. Soars ten thousand
feet: eyesight eight times stronger than human
and they are indeed, the largest ... raptor.
Courting, sky dancing show, Cirque du Soleil,
can't beat their score. Biggest nest, atop tall
trees, their babies are called eaglets and crawl
and fledge but not too far. Grandeur display,
winged feathers of prominence. Humankind
edge what remains their last hope, be enshrined.

Premium Member Bat Phone Is Ringing

Yes, spring has sprung and the bat phone is ringing.
Dragon is at it again! He grabbed his cape! No kidding!
Wouldn’t you know! Here we go, with his eyes to the sky.
Look out bad guys! He’s soaring up in the air, so say bye-bye.

In this case there was a fire, some place, Dragon was needed NOW!
A little girl lost in a fire so hot, and no one can find her, somehow!
So Dragon came in, flew right in, but she wasn’t anywhere on top.
The basement next, there she sat balled up, real close, & so scared.

She was protecting her kittens and a momma cat! And she was in tears!
Dragon to the rescue! He saved all the little ones, huddled in great fear.
He pushed them outside through the basement window, isn’t he a dear?
Tho he naturally, wouldn’t fit through that window, that was so near!

He climbed slowly up the steps, where the house was totally engulfed.
But, never fear, he’s a Dragon, my dear, flames simply don’t bother him.
He got to the back door, as a volunteer fireman, totally hosed him down.
Literally, ALL the way down, to the basement again! HEY! Silly Clown!

The fireman, the Sheriff of Crazyland, was trying to hold the hose, tight!
Out of control, he blew Dragon, back down in the hole! Until, the others…
Could grab it away! The Sheriff of Crazyland, still wanting to be helpful…
He took the little girl and cats to her Mom! So HE was called the hero!

He got a photo taken, for a newspaper spread, as Yep! Here we go again!
By the time Dragon got out, few were about, as the fear had gone away.
And Dragon’s chance to be a hero, well that too, had flown far, that day.
Now, WE ALL KNOW, the great thing he, absolutely, himself, had done.

Later, he’d leave the mascot title behind, to become a Full Fledge Fireman.
But he wouldn’t be there to receive it, until later that next day, you see…
For now, he’s too busy, chasing the Sheriff of CrazyLand, all over the place.
And guess what! He made the front page under the Hero Sheriff, that said…

“That Crazy Dragon! Guess What? He’s at It AGAIN… Chasing the Hero!”
But Don’t Worry, I made him a New Cape! And I called the newspapermen.
So he got a correction, on what happened, along with news of his promotion!
Next day, Umm, on the very LAST page. Oh, Well! Sigh! Can’t win them all.
But you and I… We will always know… The End

Premium Member My New Bride

As I lay in sleep's sweet caress,
she places a kiss on my lips.
And as her moist lips gently press;
I feel a movement in her hips.
With a playful tug, her bra slips;
and smiles instantly fill the room.
For as our sweat mingles and drips,
my new bride makes love to her groom.

Her soft, gentle hands massage me
as I rise to the occasion.
And opening my eyes; I see
that my bride needs no persuasion.
Factoring in love's equation,
we weave wishes upon hope's loom.
And on this joyous occasion,
my new bride makes love to her groom.

Dawn's first light paints the morning sky,
as the songbirds begin to sing.
And passion morphs into a sigh;
as she makes me feel like a king.
She sparkles like her wedding ring;
and smells sweet, like roses in bloom.
While we wrestle with sheets that cling,
my new bride makes love to her groom.

My hopes and dreams fledge, taking wing,
fueled by her subtle perfume.
And upon the first day of spring,
my new bride makes love to her groom.

Cause You To Love

Cause you to love ……………….. the heart got arrayed
……………. With my tiny hard loves,
Cause the unfilled dreams …………. would get fulfilled
……….. Depressions of my heart were swept.
Cause the spring to come ………… the lazy winter days
…………….. Were lost at my apathy,
Cause the garden flowers …………….. to get full-fledge
………….. The heart was set lit of value.

Cause you to love ………………………… my passions
…………. Hath kept sake at the door to heart,
Cause the blue stars ……………………… to full-fledge
………….. I went counting times in breeze.
Cause the rain to come ………………. cry of the clouds
…………………… Upset the mind,
Cause warmth of the heart ……………….. to full-fledge
…………. I welcomed the auspicious sun-rise.

Case you to love …………… the dew dab white flowers
………….. Were taken up with so care,
Cause brightness of the darkroom ………... to full-fledge
…………. The close door was kept open.
Cause you to come ……………………….… to just love
…………... I was waiting all the time,
Cause my bloody love ………………….… to full-fledge
……….. I drew a decorative quilt in my heart.

Big Eye Wonderment

An iridescent celestial being
Anarchic yet effervescent adolescent
Frolicking freely in the omnipresent forest,
Like a breeze through the leaves.
Barefoot & star gazing — native & trail blazing.
Like a clever, fearless fairy exploring the faraway night sky,
I am the fantastic bit of magic on an otherwise static planet.
Bewitched by wild wonderment;
Coloring my life with the chaos of pathos.
I am the captain of passion, & best little hippie
On the mountain — formed by a volcanic fountain
That caused a panic on our little oceanic planet.

Dancing in multidimensional secrecy,
Past an unattainable horizon
Is where you'll find me — on the Big Island in the sea.
It is a true treasures
With impeccable weather & such mystic characteristic,
It's almost unrealistic.

So forget your whimsey Hawaii five-O fantasy
Tear a hole right through the sky
Arise, & fly with me on a real odyssey
Across the mesmerizing island
Teeming with undreamed of creatures
& seemingly endless saffron sand beaches
few have ever been
up to the
Vermilion rainbow plateaus
& sacred volcano summits
Amidst cascading honey suckled waterfalls
& streams of splendiferous wildflower meadows.

We can indulge in thousands of hues of bloom
Or retreat, once more to the oasis at the shore,
To stand hand in hand before the prevailing trends
Of a turning world; scattering brightness in the dark
Fledge millennium into an unadulterated oblivion.
Enveloping what is suspend in time
with a colour compass configurations
The universe, nearly legible expresses herself
Writing constellational scribe
elucidating galaxy.

Dawn Chorus

The birds are singing
Declaring territories
For their survival

We cup both our ears
Straining to hear the high notes
A diverse chorus

The morning is clear
The moon is trading places
With the new daylight

Our daily lives rush
Tuning out the sounds of life
Right here in our world

The Black Birds do fight
For territorial rights
Wasting energy

The Gold Crest sings out
Exposed on a fragile branch
Hoping to be heard

The trained eye and ear
Understand the differences
Pointing their fingers

Quickly, they fly off
Most of us can not keep up
But we do not tell

It feels good right here
Taking time for fantasies
Imagining lives

Furious cycles
Birthing, living, and dying
Nature reminds us

We all sing our songs
Caring for our babies too
Urging them to fledge

Our joy and relief
Lasting only for a day
Now that they are gone

New generations
Taking on their own journeys
Fly free in new zones

The avalanche crashed an ax from nimbus peaks
these shrouds a pall a maul splitting my shield
this smur slurs my weakened war paint
my skin my beat my breath my breast
gray matter clouds —a pock-marked-psyche wears the ruse of ceruse

cosmos charity clouds once white like daylight once light as sea foam
blown and flown to the expanse of ether airy spirits afloat
now a iron-heart-anvil I’m horizontal
..an empty fossil-frame pressed into earth

these clouds these shrouds upon me
around me about me they cry
my lantern dampened they know why
cataract-clouds dimmed my gaze
they’ve simmered and condensed
they’ve become incensed
they drape me a caterwaul shawl

oh mamma sky your cirrus streams my suckle sweet
nourish my flourish rock me frock me your cumulus crib and fleece
from nest on high fledge me bluebird spry
freckle me starling’s starlight speckle
myself the Milky Way instead of ash-of-flame remains
constellated skin depicts our myth and marrow sagas
my mouth alive with words of the winds
iambic tranquilize of zephyrs sweeping wheat
and lyric wrath of gales aggrieved stripping leaves from trees
with barnstormer speech
cleanse my lens with see-through-rain till wet with reflection
that upends the blur and burr of clouds crashing down
— keep them mamma sky beyond where they belong

so I may return and re-emerge — reimagined

The Wild Child

There came no blackbird to nest in your claw-hand,
Kevin, or fledge a brood strange and sun-shunned
as you in the cold, cooped, dirt and straw
strakes where you lay down in first abandon.
Awake at cock-crow, banty lullabied,
your wretched scratch of years in netted dark
appalled - appals.
Humanity denied is always local.
All you'd come to know was taken from you -
twice. They say you missed the feathery air
and turned your little ears to catch the coo
of pigeons on the roof. Can you despair?
The pity is, you never learned to play,
the mercy is, you never learned to pray.

Premium Member Knife's Edge

Her pulse rises as she feels the cold steel
of the blade's touch warming within her mind.
And tries to imagine how it will feel;
as she draws scarlet pathways undefined.

She found feeling tethered to the knife's edge
and became numb to all but its sharp sting.
For stripped of her wings before she could fledge;
surrounded by hurt, she can't feel a thing.

Cutting, watching that scarlet trickle flow,
relieves anxieties and stress somehow.
And she walks that tightrope ever so slow,
experiencing the moment of now.

Her psyche demands a blood sacrifice;
and her body is forced to pay the price.
