If you think ants are busy, you should seek
Barry the beaver living down by Chesapeake
Gnawing down trees with every tooth in his head
Barry works twenty-four seven and will ‘til he’s dead.

Beaver, mole or platypus? It waddles like all three.
I watch the creature scoot along, wild, weird and free.
If she pauses along the way to leave some tiny eggs down
I will call her Platte City Platypus, named for my uncle’s town.

If I was a beaver, I would build a dam
Filling each room with beans and ham
Installing near each entrance a hidden cam
Inspiring a waterway traffic jam
I would hole up with my cousin Sam
And possibly my neighbor we call Glam
We would cut down trees with a loud bam
As we added rooms to our glamourous dam

Both fell in love with Beaver Isle
A plot was bought close to the lake
Their house was built in rustic style
This house a home they planned to make.
A plot was bought close to the lake
With a clear view and facing East
So eyes on amber dawns could feast.
Their house was built in rustic style
With rugged charm, simple décor…
One more surprise they had in store.
This house a home they planned to make
That would not be pie in the sky:
Hush ~ I can hear a baby’s cry!

Ode to a Beaver
I watch the beaver gnaw the tree
And see its place in history.
Cursed with a luxurious pelt
Sought after by European furriers.
That led to the slaughter of the species
From which a nation was conceived.
Like a virus invasion out of control,
Its numbers decimated and habitat destroyed.
We humans can be a cruel lot,
Killing for pleasure and exploitation.
I regret the harm inflicted
Upon these creatures of creation.
As I ponder my journey’s end,
At the swamp of its making,
Joy swells my heart to see
By the lodge, kits swimming.

Let's view the moon together
I'll stand behind you here
I'll put my arms around you
And whisper in your ear
I'll wrap my coat around us
It won't be cold inside
I'll tell you little somethings
To tuck away and hide
Inside the chambers of your heart
Where they will live and thrive
I'll tell them to you every day
For as long as I'm alive
Let's view the moon together
With you I want to be
I'll love on you forever
And hold you close to me

Can this thing go any faster?
At this rate, we’ll all be left behind
Cheers to our philosophy
of this could be our “perfect disaster”
Running power lines through empty cities
It felt like we could take on the world if we wanted to
I miss those feelings
fading, fading
How could something so real
slip away from me?
Wandered into a fairytale
I’m scared if I open my eyes,
it’ll all go away
I’m calling for something real
At this rate, we’ll all be left behind
I’m calling you back
hoping my advice
can be your immediate relief team
But unironically,
I’ll fall harder and faster than you will
I only hate you
‘cause you’re more forgiving than I could
ever wish to be
Can this thing go any faster?
At this rate,
I’d rather be left behind

In the sylvan sewers of Fritchy's tombie
the Pottawattamie beavers play
deep beneath the verdant pastures
where dead skunks and possum lay
Circling skyward glowing wierdly
jackal-birds sharpen their nails
those brainless fowl still don't get it
Pottawattamie leave no trail
The point, my friends, is whoever writes
such utter trash compounds our misery
Would that he fire up his rotisserie
and fry the buzzards in sympathy
Anon I hear supplicants, lost their compass again
Pity that out-of-water, they won't get deap-sea bends

The wedding cake beaver with a cha cha cha
Down New Orleans way, danced the Mardi Gras.
We said “don’t tell us he’s coming this way, Ma.”
She nodded and said “Better tell your pa.”
When the wedding cake beaver comes your way.
It means there is going to be a wedding day.
We were eight and six and scared now for sure.
The only one old enough was our cousin Cure.
Cure was seventeen, is that old enough?
To get married to some old doddery duff?
The wedding cake beaver came in with a flounce.
This mission statement he did announce.
A wedding fell through today down by the pond.
I knew your family liked cake, and this is the road I was on.
They don’t want the cake, would you like it today?
We were so thrilled we let out a hip hip hooray!

A young beaver named Sam,
Help his dad build a dam.
He loved his brand new job.
He loved working with dad, Bob.
It didn't feel like work to Sam.
The day didn't feel very long.
And he loved building a dam.
They made a builders work song.
Sam the beaver was very glad,
To spend time with his cool dad.
