Zestful

May days merry in an iridescent coat of spring for girls in flowered dresses jumping rope one at each yellow handle while two dart in and out their laughter and chants bounce in unforeseen direction "Janey and Johnny sitting in a tree K I S S I N G first came love then came..." "skip, skip, skip to my Lou skip to my Lou my darlin'..." more chants that snap in step with a cardio zing girls run in and out of an airborne rope skip, count skip and count like keeping time while the rest of the world roots in trouble careful hops like dancing 'round good luck pennies the snap of the rope smacking pavement as if filling a void till sunset fits broad, passive shadows to faces smirking silvered by the zestful push of youth till one day girls step through the rope without a pause to come to want different things Poem composed May 13/2023

The sound of the rope as it hits the ground with a snapping beat. I listen and watch to see, Friendships: sharing, taking turns. Language development: rhyming. Motor development: jumping, balance. Memories: joy, relished happiness, smiles and love. What a wonderful poem that brought back nice memories for me. I am so glad to have found it.

Thank you, Marikate. Skipping rope yields many rewards + harkens back to simpler days when our feet barely knew pavement. Be well dear lady. With appreciation, Brian

Your title says it all Brian while your words describe it all : Vigorous and enthusiastic enjoyment. Sadly, some other playtime world that once was. I wouldn't be surprised if there is an app now for skipping. :) Loved it. Cheers - Gary

Hi Gary, my appreciation for your supportive appraisal of my posting. You are quite right in that skipping is a lost art among youngsters though a few still engage. With A1 intelligence now, will poetry (computer generated) become the new normal? Sometimes change hangs like dark curtain. Be well. Brian

Dynamic ending, Brian. I liked it. Brought back some memories of my sisters jumping rope forever it seemed. :-) Good luck in the contest! A poet friend in Texas, Bill

Hi Bill, Thank you for your thoughtful comment on my posting. The poem placed well. For some, the piece is sentimental + too nostalgic. However, some time ago, neighborhood girls celebrated (in joy) their rope skip dexterity. It was worth a salute. Be well. Brian

You took me many years back in time, Brian! Those were the days when life was less complicated, and filled with innocent fun. We were happier then, even though we lacked material possessions. ~ Regards // paul

Thanks very much Paul, for your message. Indeed, the days of the Cold War were fretful for our parents, but we youngin's had freedom + play. Today, the complications in war + news seem overwhelming. Sincerest regards, Brian

Hello Linda, I wrote the piece at my cabin buzzing with black flies. The poem needed better circumstances for stronger lines. Thank you, however, for your thoughtful message. Brian

Maybe you had daughters or sisters that brought you these memories. I'd love to send this to my best friend. As 6 year olds, we would swing on her swingset for hours singing Doris Day's, Que Sera Sera. I bet there are still barretts in the grass. Wanting the same things then, different things now. I loved those lines Brian. This poem brought back a wonderful memory. Oh, to be 6 again. What a sweet poem with a perfect title. I really enjoyed it.

In all honesty, Marikate, the neighborhood girls tried to entice me into double Dutch. I marvelled at the girls' dexterity + movement. One blond girl held me spellbound, (truthfully a childhood crush). Sometimes memory keeps a flame. Thank you for your thoughtful message. Be well. Brian
