Today I was totally awestruck, Found many family photos When we had moved That had been packed, but not numbered in this mystery box, Laying quietly, naively, It’s contents Blew off my socks. I stared with unbelief At this picture, As my ancestry was revealed, It was hiding under some Documents, concealed, From view, I shook the Document, out fell this gem From the 19th century, unbelievable, Inconceivable, The child in the photo My grandfather as a baby, With his grandfather. His mother, My great grandmother. My grandfather Sent this to me In nineteen seventy, It was put in a box And forgotten, until today, A scene from Turkey A place far away, But meant something To me, so dear and so close, Those old-fashioned clothes, The generations between us Seemed to disappear, As I heard my papou Whisper from heaven, In my ear, So glad you this found This box and photo Today, did you not Notice it’s half open lid, Its contents hid For a century and a half, It was time you knew My grandfather too! PAPOU IN GREEK MEANS GRANDFATHER

How awesome for you and so glad you shared this with us. I know you were delighted in so many ways to see the past come to life in your hands. I remember my father talking about in his generation that male babies, toddlers, and little boys had to wear what he called aprons until they were old enough to totally pottie trained. He said then they wore knickers (knee pants) until they were old enough to work helping do manly chores. Thanks for your visit to my page. Sara..soupmail soon

Hello Jennifer ... brought back great memories of my own situation. My cousin left me some photos where old folk I remembered were young in the photos, and how the scenery has changed - thanks once again Jennifer - Lindsay

Hi Jo - thank-you for commenting on my poem - I was so enthralled when I found this particular photo. My grandfather was my mentor and wrote to each other from the time and age (was very young, - perhaps) when I began writing. Take care and be safe, Jennifer.

Jennifer mou! So happy for you, sis! I love these old photos. Plus handwriting of relatives long gone. I have many pictures. Including my grandfathers signature on my very first birthday card. My fathers sister and brother perished during the Spanish flu epidemic. Both in their early twenties. She had hair, down to her waist. And styled. Lovely. Thanks for sharing this...Jenn.....Panagiota xxoo

Panagiota my friend, I read somewhere on soup, that your stitches have come out, Yippee! Pangie, Panagiota or my Greek sis., you are all of the above mentioned. But you and I bonded I think by your fourth or fifth poem you posted some years ago. Going to your page now - 'perastika'!
