Hush of Xmas Past

To rush down the stairs of pure excitement and spill onto the floor of packaged gifts Wanting to open each cherished present Only to find new clothes, the emotion shifts To live in worlds of a child's fantasy as they dream of things that can't be obtained To grapple with truth, a learned capacity One a disappointed child can't sustain This is the past of a hushed Christmas When spaces lived in were trodden and poor Where there was comfort in love's surplus and our lives were before us to explore To have lived through a time, when love was all Even if presents of clothes, were all we saw contest "X" new or old sponsor Constance La France 12/11/14

Frederic, Congratulations on your win, and also for finding comfort in love when there were only clothes under the tree.

CONGRATS on your win, Frederic. Yes, kids--many of them--learn early in life that necessities come first, even at Christmas. Janice

Well written sentiments, Frederic, of bittersweet memories. As we grow up, we realize love is the greatest gift in childhood, but every child dreams of a Christmas morning with lots of toys! I predict a big winner with this one! Hugs, Rhonda

Funny you know I was always such a practical girl, the parenting child, I made a lot of my own clothes & that must be why to get new store bought clothes at Xmas was not disappointing (also perhaps girls like clothes more?) My home life was very unsettled and just to all be together at Xmas(without arguments) was fine by me & candy canes! I love peppermint! You wrote a fine sonnet above, you were lucky to be so loved as well! Thanks for the kind comment you left! Happy Holidays
