Sewing machine, long idle, gathered dust next to a uniform lined with medals She watched him shine them, he'd make such a fuss, so thankful he'd returned from the battles Eyes closed, giggling as she's swept in his arms she knows they'll be happy a good long while Him not being short on good looks or charms She knows at her end she'll still wear a smile..... The war years seemed like only yesterday; he looks at the coat and tarnished medal Eyes closed, here she's laid many a birthday; he could  never help her fight this battle A faint smile pon her lips; he understands ...so many years he's prayed for just a spark He sat and kissed her quickly cooling hands The candle sputtered, spent, and all was dark 04/14/2018

Thank you very much Susan. You know when I wrote it it didn't make me sad; until my husband asked me to read it to him. Then it choked me up and he just shook his head at me lol

This is really a wonderful poem, FJ. Reading it was like seeing one of those old war movies but the way you expressed the beauty and sadness while incorporating the requirements of this contest was really masterful.

Wow, FJ...what an intriguing story. There are battles or all sorts. I'm in the middle of one right now...but loved ones help...help isn't victory all the time. It's the presence of love and peace. Great write.

Beautiful picture of two united for eternity, their thinking aligned around their love for each other. I can hear him say, "You go on ahead, and I'll join you shortly." My two elderly neighbors died within four short months of each other, she went with cancer and he could not bear his fate of loneliness. A remarkable piece which young folks today could profit by imitating.

Good morning Reason :) How wonderful to 'see' you! I've also known a few older couples to die very close to each other. Thank you so very much for the kind words you've given me to read this morning.
