New Deadly Sins by
By Tammy Armstrong

A child of God from Tennessee told me I’m aging well.                   *perfectly clear
It all comes back to big creature voice,
to the faith-shadow flinch beneath still water and quick water.         *metaphor
It’s what we know from the bitter,
like the scrawl at the Devon wood mill’s loading dock:
Patti I love! You. Please come home. Bob.                                       *perfectly clear
Love letter on the loading dock and God in the aging.
It’s why there are new sins now,
because too many are making do without god and these small miracles
in magic marker come home, catch the bird, cure the stove.

Last week the headlines claimed “Ideology Trumped Science at Texas Agency.”
This is why I wait late night for your long distance calls,
lean close to the receiver to hear the underwire slung with silence
when we speak as one or lose the words that keep the thought soft.
It’s why Prometheus may have been a pinko in the gap-spilled firelight,
called all sorts of things for cupping the flame, offering it.

Look, we’re all aging well. Come home.
Because there’s news in a strange language,
the seriousness clasped in the diphthong’s severed link.
It’s always another civil war, another imf backroom deal.

The signal is freak light over these untranslatable hills
where the church bells la-la-la every half hour
and the wi-fi times out before it begins.
But news anchors in low-cut blouses believe
what I can’t understand.
Maybe it comes from pixels, from bells,
the voices perched on so much empty,
and these sins so tight around the neck.

Remember that time I fell on black ice?
The pain sparked God.
Not cupped but spilled.

Let me know if you like this and why? If not? and why?

Bly calls it "riding the dragon" these leaps from subconscious to conscious "emotion to touch" turn me on in this write....."and these sins so tight around the neck" "The pain sparked God" "the voices perched on so much empty" also.....the acceleration of images presented in the second half, with shortened lines is cool...

Thanks Andie & Carrie for letting us know your thoughts and feeling. This poem does communicate with me. It reminds me of the years I have spent waiting for my son to call, he calls very little [though more the past few years] It reminds me that we should should not wait to live- as we wait unfilled by whatever expectation we have-we shrivel-up, age, decay, to age LESS we must LIVE more and happily. This verse says this clearly to me. And that all supposed gifts are double edged swords.

Another Billy Collins I smile upon reading is "Introduction To Poetry"...... we so often at Poetry Soup like to dissect a good poem, instead of just enjoying it ! :) LOL !!

I can see what pulls you in with this poem, & believe we are drawn to poetry that somehow sparks a bit of truth in our lives. Be sure, I'm not saying I "don't like it"...I do. Especially " This is why I wait late night for your long distance calls, lean close to the receiver to hear the underwire slung with silence"...can see how that line grabs you. Beautifully written. But other poets maybe have touched me more...brought me literally to tears. Those for me are keepers.

Hi Deb, Although I can appreciate the talent it takes to write a poem as this, to be honest, it isn't my cup of tea. I do admire one who can write metaphorically with skill (and you, especially, do that better than most), I don't want to struggle for understanding. I prefer it to slip over me, and sink in, as a hot bath. I prefer a poem that has some story..., not rhymed, or forced, but gently expressive,...enough to move me to tears, or laughter, or some emotion. Perhaps much too simplistic for some tastes,..but a poet like Billy Collins can make me want to read his poems again and again. "Picnic Lightning", or "American Sonnet".., these are the poems that I remember, and want to hold.

Billy Collins from NY and I have read numerous verses of his in fact his book is on my desk. But I have not wanted to re-read any of his verses. Isn't there a phrase above which touches you Carrie?
Date: 8/1/2015 8:39:00 AM
The [big creature voice]- I believe- is the voice of God which she has faith IS there [even though many don't want to acknowledge it -ie the flinch] there is a fairly common saying that goes "still waters run deep" the meaning-a quiet or placid manner may conceal a more passionate nature. - so one might assume QUICK waters are shallow BUT shallow or deep she is saying she believes [as I do] the faith that higher power is there with all human beings is at the core of life.

some verses are written to make you FEEL the way the poet is FEELING at the time of writing the verse. Not to TELL you how it felt.

Debs, I am happy that you are able to get her message so well. For this reason, you are able to publish in the modern magazines of today's world. I think most of us write in the style that we most appreciate. I was never good at puzzles. I see this kind of writing as a "puzzle." Except for crossword puzzles, I feel frustration working on many different kinds of puzzles. (I scored very low on "abstract thinking" in my SAT's). Frustration leads me to dislike the thing that is making me feel that way. Truly, it is how we are "born." Debs. Personality tests have helped me to realize why my personality type needs certain things to be happy. So I will continue reading only those poems that I do not have to waste my time pondering (this in itself is a "skill set" that some people simply do not care about or have the ability for; the desire to deeply ponder things until it clicks), and this takes me back to my dislike of puzzles. . . (they take TOO dang long!)
Date: 7/31/2015 9:46:00 PM
It would take too much work for me to totally get it. I don't like it at all, Debs. Sorry.

There are several other poets here at Soup that are superb at free verse and they do not write in this way either. Carrie and Sandy Adams are two that come to my mind. Many others actually. Your poems I also enjoy when you write with lucidity. There is even a magazine called Lucidity! I think I should subscribe to it again. It's all a mental thing, Debs. Some of us do not have brains that think in the way of the more surreal type writers. There is so much of psychology in what individuals are able to comprehend and enjoy.

Not for me, Debs. Anyway, I love metaphor and symbolism but this is just TOO MUCH. Charlotte is an example of someone whose free verse poetry is not all that accessible, but it is so clear and beautiful, I WANT to stay with it and I get it. There are many poets out there who can write that way. These ones like you sometimes show us, I am sorry, but I will never be interested in reading them.

Writing that is totally acessable in the first reading can be totally boring Andie, too simple.
