FRESH, uncommon use of VERBS and metaphor _ Try it You'll Like iT

CONSTITUTIONAL by Jaime Forsythe

Her Silent Silohouette Art by Conway

Plane balanced on a cloud
carves a grave telegram.
If we gather our venom in one place,
it will die in the fire. Tumour be gone.
Foaming under flannel, long
for weather, long for nuclear
feeling. The thin robber poached
the change jar, left our linen
floating on the line.

One night only: a memory screens
on a farmhouse ceiling. The stars
onstage ate sponge cake
before playing. We held our jealousy
careful as injured wrens.
Swampy vocals, dirty fork on an amp,
smashed lilies in the circle pit
made a map of the downtown core.
Roped into an espresso at midnight,
strange coos in the alcoholic
hallway. The only one at the punk show
in a pea coat. When shown the sky,
a new device named Ursa Major. Snares
shivered lonely on the concrete.

Never too early, never solo.
Time melts as mint concoctions stream
from the shaker printed with remedies.
Suspended on our backs, stuffed, ear
canals filling with brook,
the patterns on the bridge’s underside
a silent film. Air thick with the bee
mortality rate keeps the crops
from curing arthritis and leaking ink
for acid lyrics. Plastic hot dog
lost in the current.

Rawhide in my pocket trails
a ribbon of scent, perks up the dozing
huskies. The leafy swish
of her crinoline, faceless
monsters in the corn.
Please respect the corn.
It took us months to grow it,
and your parents first met
in its rustle. Shards of my shadow
lives gather in the basement, form
a support group, with punch.
Just when I find solace against a cool
wall, a panel begins to move. The green
room is bare, but if you stand in its heart,
you can feel the weight of smock,
stethoscope, and scalpel, the energy
of the current that keeps your spirits high.
Fog is a curtain around the operating table.

We tried to coax the bees into the squash
flowers, but the seeds were rotten to start.
They pour something blue on the beds
and enjoy pastel drinks laced with fertilizer.
Dessert ruined: cream shook to butter too quick.
Conversation a muddy pool, an empty trap.
The rhythm is recorded first before
the voices, one at a time. At one time, women banded
together: cigarmakers, tailoresses, umbrella
sewers, capmakers, laundresses, shoeworkers.
A felt-skirt factory, a picture-frame factory.
Many roamed the cities looking for food.
Their babies took what they had
and placed it back into the ground,
eating earth, drooling
as their teeth grew in.
The little ones squinted at shrubs
and dreamed of woolly mammoths
chewing at their land.

First Printed in the Rusty Toque Issue 7

Do you see, can you read and value, the freshness, the unique way this woman expresses herself? What are your favorite metaphors? Which lines gave you pause- to read again and ponder?

Bet, I found her... I'd love to invite her over to Soup... her "platform" is very approachable and she is a fellow Canadian from Nova Scotia. Her book is full of this wild imagery and is titled, "Sympathy Loophole." From a review, "This is not your grandmother’s poetry. Filled to the brim with scenes that delight and disturb, Forsythe constantly surprises with an unforeseen twist or metaphor that is so strangely perfect that you have to reread and ruminate." Sometimes it is about be willing to go where a poem wants to take you. Like Alice in Wonderland, which is why you love it, as I do, Debbie.

Tom: www.stephaniedeshpande.com/ Check out her home page. She liked what I said so much that she used it on her HOME PAGE. The internet connects people all the time. People we did not know.

True story: I had a contest here that used art as inspiration. The artist googled herself. FOUND MY BLOG. (Stephanie Deshpande) and she read all the poems that her work inspired and has posted them on her OWN blog.

OF COURSE what a reader enjoys is personal and not all will like the same poet. Styles differ for a reason. But we can choose to say things, as you said yourself, with more tact. It's kind of... professional courtesy? One poet to another? Respect for peers? Anything sound feasible?

Tom, I was just letting you know that I often invite poets to Soup, poets who are established, well regarded in the literary world and who have been published, as this poet has been. Some have taken me up on it. After all, they know more than I do...

Tom, if the vanilla ice cream was homemade and the person who'd made it was sitting right beside you would you say you detest it or that it isn't a flavour to your liking? I'm asking because sometimes I invite published poets to soup to read these reviews.

:) Chris, how wonderful. I'm supposing you know about the "Little Free Libraries" and there is another 'movement' out there where people leave books in Ziploc bags anywhere, free to whoever finds them. I think that is beautiful.

Hi Tom, I'm not offended - my dear no, for over 6 months I have been trying to wade through Foucault's Pendulum by Italian writer and philosopher Umberto Eco (same stream of consciousness type of writing) and though it is very challenging I will say I have learned more that I never new in this book than in the last 66 years of reading! Somewhat painful but worth disecting.

You are correct, Deb....I had a discussion couple yrs ago with an explorer from Minnesota...Will Steger.....we were discussing his trek to Iceland, and the melting of "Ice Shelf #2" in the Northwest of Iceland (now gone!) the greatest ice shelf melt in history (he signed my tribute poem "Real American Hero!") He told me and I quote "Jim, you are aware, that's all that is needed"

Sean and we must learn to accept that we are not unique in our fears and that to be afraid is a valid reaction to what's happening in the world around us - we must not think ourselves mad for being fearfull - there is reason to fear & shutting our eyes to it does not reduce the reality of it.

Hi Debbie, thank you for sharing this poem.. i love the second and third stanza... wow!! Love the metaphors used! Creative and it got me thinking and leave me puzzled but all in all awed me.... in a way I am also picturing myself as like this in some ways.. for at times Im finding hard to find good synonyms to bring out what I want to express.. hence I tried describing and conveying what I want to say in noun like terms... thanks much... =')~olive eloisa

Olive you do better than most dear for you experiement and try & are not put off by suggestion - you have a strong sense of self & that's a BIG advantage for a poet!

One more it makes a poem stand out and I appreciate is so much the writers who can deliver those imagery and those unique words in good flow.. because me I have some difficulty forning the right way or the better way.. =')
Date: 6/12/2015 4:42:00 PM
Debs, it is so unique that it is difficult for me to understand. That is why I can't write this way myself , nor can I enjoy poetry with lots of strange metaphors. Also, the length turns me off. When it takes so long just to understand one stanza, I can't maintain interest. I guess this means I am not an intellectual or something. Anyway, It has some cool imagery in it. Love the one about the stars eating spongecake. I am always up for great food metaphors!

Yes, many things are taken for art, but not necessarily art that I enjoy. A lot of it includes surreal paintings in museums.

well Andie if all you can handle is a little bite that's fine - no one can tell when someone else is ready to hear or listen - you tried!

I think it is a type of rant verse stirred with the homey images of apres armegeddon, wild fires, hurricanes, gen modified corn, workers with no work - bees with no flowers, SPELLBINDING

POWERHOUSE POEM! Can barely take in all the imagery... and the careful use of alliteration (carefully bridged--ohoh so good) I like: "Time melts as mint concoctions stream" I have a fixation on time/clocks so this one really spoke to me. and the injured wrens/jealousy line.. the weight of a smock (I hung on that one... couldn't let it go) Must go... an hour and then I have to pull a rabbit (energy) out of a hat. hugs and love, Dee (GREAT BLOG)

pastel drinks laced with fertilizer..... you've seen the Euro "taste-testing" American snacks on you tube....one guy from Italy said after chewing on (and spitting out) a "slim jim" sausage stick.....exclaimed "now I'm never going to USA!"...."faceless monsters in the corn" liked the reversal in time sequencing near the end....so cool, Deb

I don't like the use of venom in a poem because it has become trite for it is used so much.. I do like the opening line "Plane balanced on a cloud carves a grave telegram" which speaks of something ominous about to happen that is to me..Sara
