REVISED Sestina please read

Blog Posted:5/22/2013 3:10:00 PM
I big round of applauds for everyone trying the When the Going Gets Rough Contest.

I wanted to stop by and give you a helpful heads up on the Sestina.

If you want the six words to stay the same that's FINE.

I will be thrilled if you just TRY.

I am just giving you an alternative. If I can find my source for this variant type I will post the info BUT it doesn't really matter for this contest it is OK to do as I suggest below.

Pick your six words carefully, the more ways you can use the same word the better. Let me show you with the example below from someone's entry. They picked the following end words.

happy

sun

wonder

fruit

run

laugh

For the first word happy you can also use

happily

happier

unhappy

For the second word sun they could use

sunny

sunshine

sunlight

For the third word wonder they could use

wonderful

wonderfully

wondering

For the forth word fruit

fruity

fruitful

fruitless

For the fifth word run they could also use

runner

running

runs

For the sixth word laugh

laughter

laughing

BELOW is a sestina which changes its ending slightly as I have suggested for those interest

called Operation Memory by David Lehman -

http://www.poets.org/viewmedia.php/prmMID/15357

SO chose your six words carefully so you can have a lot of variety and don't end every line in a sentence use ENJAMBMENT

Also DO scatter the six words you pick elsewhere in the sestina since it adds unity to the piece! Happy writing, soup mail me if you want help!

Light & Love

Where was it we saw modern sestina's varying the root word? anyway FOR THIS CONTEST YOU HAVE THE JUDGES PERMISSION..TRY..above I have made up words to use as an example which I should have taken the time to do to begin with

Check out my blog. I have posted three links which should help. Also, I gave a wee example of how to choose the endwords, the play on words, poem development and how theme/focus pushes the poem forward. HUGS. :D BEDTIME FOR BONZO LOL

haha, you are blogging on the one form I plan NOT to use. Then again, maybe it would not be so bad. I am having a heck of a time thinking how to do this one, Debs. Hope to make time for it. Luv, Andrea

    Villanelle are usually easier!

villanelles are always easier. I have never written anything harder than a sestet.

Hey Dee I can't wait to read it! I hope I can understand it. Chaucer was barely understandable is it later than that?

Entered it... I have written it using a mix of methods, contemporary, at points, traditional, for chosen effect. I have only slid in a few 13th-14th century words, just to flavour it. An example of what I left out? Ich. Ich = I. I had considered changing every pronoun... but chose to keep the blend, for readability. Hard to balance the "ole" and the modern. I'm EXHAUSTED. lol. In a good way
  1. Date: 5/22/2013 7:13:00 PM
I did not know whose poem it was Joyce BUT I had already passed it on to the next round, there was nothing at all wrong with it, I just wanted folks to know they COULD use variations of the words they picked and didn't have to stick to the exact word, sorry if you thought I was being critical of your verse I wasn't. I should have just made up words.

Well, working on it, and this will probably be the LAST time I try for Chaucer English, lol, holy crap! So, I did choose my six words VERY intentionally, but I am also wacky enough to try to ensure that each of those six words and any of their derivatives were in use in 1350 England... what was I thinking? AWK! Take Dead... so much to use... but NOT deadlock, deadbolt, deadhead... Nope, many of these words came to use after 1600... my sestina is beginning to remind me of David's contest... I am knee deep in research and lovin' it cause I'm strange that way. Gotta fly. HUGS

My suggestion is that FIRST the poet brainstorm those six words based on both the theme of their poem, the story it tells, the voice it uses and where you want the reader to pause and reflect.. if that makes sense. ;-) HUGS!

I think the six words should be pondered upon, chosen because of their flexibility, of course, but also for their significance to that ONE poem... ie... what words would you choose for Titanic...
MacMillan Avatar Cyndi MacMillan Date: 5/22/2013 3:59:00 PM Block poet from commenting on your poetry

One, hmmmm.... there are times that a word can be chosen intentionally BECAUSE it merits repetition, focusing attention and emotions. Take your why... now, if I wrote a sestina about Sandy Hook... why... why deserves to be screamed in each verse, yes?
