I am a doctor based in UK and have served the National health service for nearly 30 years. Poetry has been my interest from a very early age and read poetry in Hindi, Tamil and English.
My all time favourite poem is the Elegy in a country churchyard by Thomas Gray, I love Robert Frost, Browning, Wordsworth and Tennyson. I have made a pilgrimage to their birthplace. My favourite writers include Somerset Maugham and Dapne Du Maurier.
I love reading poetry but like great poems that are not lost in extreme verbosity, a tendency for many who employ free verse. Christina Rossetti is a great example of a poet who conveyed beautiful thoughts in simple language.
' Home they brought her Warrior dead' is a good example of a brilliant poem written with the simplest of words.

I look forward to reading the brilliant works of the many poets on Poetry Soup.

The poets on the PS welcome page

Blog Posted by Krish Radhakrishna: 5/25/2022 12:01:00 AM

I have seen this page for sometime and it features some poets who seem to be a permanent fixture on the PS welcome to poetry soup home page, where as a few others rotate briefly! I was wondering if there is a method to this? Most certainly this is not at random as some poets are always there and some others for months! So can PS management explain how this is done? If people are paying to be members, everyone should have a fair equal chance of being on this page- or am I completely wrong to raise this issue?

Update: per TPS's reply to my query; only members who had created an avatar/icon while being a lifetime member or had a paid membership at any given time, then became non-members, will be posted on the Home page, "Welcome to Poetry Soup", interchangeable most active members list.

Krish, it has to do with community poets, if you look at the left and scroll down to Poets- Top 100 Community, you will see it is the same order as the home page pics, but this order changes almost daily, because it depends on how active a person is on the site each day ie commenting on poems, responding to comments on your poems with replies, doing blogs, commenting on blogs, hosting contests, posting poems, and probably more.. so basically the more active you are on the site the higher you are on that list.. but its just a list, means nothing in reality, just enjoy the site and do your thing, blessings ~Constance

Constance, you have the same attitude that I do about lists. Some take it far too seriously.

Seems to correspond really well to top (33) community. Not exact, because I imagine the picture list and the top community are updated at slightly different frequencies. At the moment, I'm #16 on the list and 16th picture if you count left to right , row 1 being 1..11, row two being 12..22, etc.

Keep going at the rate you are going, Jeff, and you'll soon be at the top. You are a significant, important contributor to Poetry Soup, and I, for one, thoroughly enjoy your poetry.

Interesting questions Krish. Those who comment most on other people's poems are placed on the top of the list. It is ranked on the basis of comments made and changes accordingly

Poets like Milton and Caren give SO much to the community with comments and replies and still finding time to write amazing poetry and I am so glad they are here to support the poets on the site:-)

Thank you so much, Jan. I can say I don't participate to receive that recognition. I participate because I love the site and the poets, and I have the time to be contributive and encouraging. This is, unfortunately, not true of everyone. You might be amazed at how important this site is to my well-being, my creativity, and my opportunity to be supportive to fellow poets.

Hi Krish is based on being active on the site - all the people shown are on the community builders list, I need to give more time to soup and commenting but its not to be at the moment.hugs Jan xx

Hi, Krish, I understand it's based on PS members' number of posted comments on other PS members' poems. The more they post, the more they move upward and they'll maintain their ranking if they continue posting commentaries without fail lest they slip down the scale my friend, Aloha~William

I could be mistaken as I do not frequent the home page as often, but I trust a missing avatar might come into play here -- waiting on TPS for a reply, tick-tock ...

An examplar regarding non-member status can dos and cannot do that I've based this on, comes from the PS Premium Membership page, whereto, Christuraj Alex posted numerous comments whose avatar/name I've never seen placed there.

Hilo that is incorrect, if you see the top community poets there are ones who are not premium members whose pictures show on the home page. hugs Jan xx
