The Moment
Chubby cheeks pause milking
from mother’s hanging breast.
 
Heartbeats are balancing
the drunken fan’s bawling.
 
A fist swinging laugher
pauses to meditate.
 
The batter is ready,
slightly crouched by the plate.
 
Pennants flutter gently
in the afternoon breeze.
 
The pitcher checks first base,
then the delivery.

Most people that know me here on the Soup, know Gary lives each year for baseball season. Well, today is known to most people in the USA as tax day. It is also Jackie Robinson Day as well. I prefer Jackie's day myself. This is a poem I wrote about Jackie.

Breakthrough ball player. This allowed Satchel Paige to finally make it around age 50. Sadly, Josh Gibson's days were long past. When we teach character, we teach about people like Jackie Robinson, Ernie Banks, Henry Aaron. I have little use for the pampered overpaid juiced up athletes we have today, crying about the unfairness of life and milking the living sh_t out of the fans, are above the law and at best mediocre. Great blog. Vince
